nice find ..
Greedy agents indeed ..
i don't think there is any good economic organization in Doha , my guess is that no matter how high the ticket prices are it's never gonna cover the expenses and i think the tournaments' management is oaying just to get the tournament going .. attendance is never that big in doha except for the final matches ..

That's too bad really as I'm sure Fed would have loved to hold the title. I must say their description of Davydenko was less than flattering. lol

amazing because we see images like that in stadiums around the world all year round. It almost beggars belief the tennis season is so much longer than any other sport with consistently such low attendances in so many tournaments. It really is greed and the ATP and WTA don't seem to be in a position to make a real difference. It may weel come down to Tournament directors and agents to make the difference.

nice find ..
Since it's a new year and I'm in a good mood I'm going to share my method for finding this:

Those talented people at Google have a new feature called Alerts

http://www.google.com/alerts

You tell it what you want info on, what type (news, web, etc... - I always pick news), to what email addr and how often. I set one up with 'Federer' and get (sometimes too many/redundant) emails when there is a news story.

The idea of appearance money is ********. Screw the top ranked players. If they dont want to attend, who cares. Their ranking wont be as high as a result. Instead of giving that appearance money away to top ranked players, why not use it to up the prize money for everyone else. I think the problem with pro tennis is that only really 100 people have the chance at a decent life through the tour. In the MLB, NBA, or NFL hundreds of people are paid 6 figure salaries. In tennis however, this only occurs with the players ranked inside the top 100 or higher. The ATP needs to force the tournament directors to distribute the money more evenly so that 1st round losers get more money. This would put money in the pockets of the up and comers trying to make it. If you ever watch the movie journeyman, you can see that being ranked at about 100 and losing the first couple rounds of most of your tournaments doesnt pay off because the traveling expenses are so high that you end up with pocket change at the end of the year. The ATP needs to do something such as 1) making deals with airlines to try and get discounted rates for all of the players (or even pay for the players airfare), 2) increase advertising for torunaments (especially in the U.S), 3) and try to make the sport overall more popular by increasing the amount of tennis that is televised by supporting networks such as the Tennis Channel and helping them to get permission for televising the tournaments. Overall, the money is too clumped at the top and the attendance of tournaments is low due to lack of advertising and lack of cable time. The Tennis Channel wont cut it as a real channel because it is only provided through digital cable. It needs to become a cable channel so that more people who only have basic cable can see it. I dont know, these are just my opinions.

Where to start? :)

The top seeds sell tickets! Period. Just is the justification for appearance fees. No one's going to see Vince Spadea, Gimelstob, Robin Soderling - they go to see Fed, Rafa, Roddick, Blake.

The players do get discounts for hotels - and I'd assume any savvy frequent flyer (I know I do) can play the airline system to get good deals - over the course of a year they must earn enough FF miles to get a lot of freebies. Not knowing when your last day at the tournament can be an issue - but not insurmountable.

Sorry, but the Tennis Channel isn't the answer (are you related to Steve or do you work there?) - they need to get ESPN (or some other established station) to put even more emphasis on tennis (at least here in the US). It can't be a station that people have to seek out - has to be one that's already 'in their face.' Offering HD would be a nice start, ESPN.

Agree on marketing - more, more, more. Of course the players have to help out by making themselves available - e.g. more autograph/photo sessions on off days at the TMS and Slams.

wow, anyone would think they were professional tennis players the way they try to earn as much money as they can before retiring...

Exactly. And not like Fed has to kidnap anyone to get appearance money. He pays IMG their 10% hoping they'll help him make as much as possible. Maybe they tried to squeeze the tourney director at Doha a little too hard this time - but he'll just play Kooyong and back up the Brink's truck there. All hail Capitalism.

Yes, at the Challenger and Future level, the tournaments that don't provide housing or hospitality, usually do arrange a block of rooms at a nearby hotel with a discounted rate. At the ATP tour level, regular weekly tournaments PROVIDE hotel rooms for all main draw players as long as they are active in the draw (they have one day to get out once they lose). Masters events also provide rooms, except for Indian Wells and Miami which pay per diem and let the players arrange their own accomodation (because they are large combined events like Slams).

Anyway, this article is nothing but speculation (note the use of the word probable) and no real proof is offered to support that speculation. I vaguely remember that Fed said back around the USO that he wasn't going to play Doha this year. If he had any real cajones, he wouldn't play Dubai either until they guarantee that they will allow the Israeli players to enter the country to play the tournament.

I agree. It's pure speculation. Federer wouldn't play 3 consecutive tournaments anymore given the amount of tennis he played late last season. The reason he played there the last a couple of years was because he didn't play many matches in previous fall due to injury.

When you read article like this, you have to watch the words MAY, COULD, PROBABLE.

Good point.

Yes, they're real self-employed people trying to make sure they'll have enough money to carry them through their old age.

the ****** finally pays for his shocking greed.good!

Doha aka the Exxon Mobil tournament. This corporation could carry this tournamnent if only 1 person was watching from the stands. Good, let the players charge huge amounts of money for appearing in this tournament. It's small change for Exxon.
