Huge breakthrough for Thiem..who like Nadal prefers 5 set wars of attrition. Thiem now up there with Nadal and Djokovic as only realistic contenders for FO and USO.
He is worth putting money on for both as will get good odds.
With Thiem's 2018 US Open on their new surface which suits his game better, one could easily argue that he might have won the entire event if he'd gotten by Nadal in hindsight. Delpo was next and was pretty bad in final despite walking over Nadal in two sets in his SF. Given Thiem's track record with Delpo, I expect he might have pulled that one out. With the likes of Khachanov and Zedrot beating him late in the year, not completely out of the question that Thiem might prevail given he's won their last two matches pretty handily.Huge breakthrough for Thiem..who like Nadal prefers 5 set wars of attrition. Is this where we’re supposed to get on the bandwagon ?

I wouldn’t discount Federer for either of the FO, Wimbledon or USO titles.

I think Miami will be a great further test for Thiem. Faster than IW, but shortly following so if Thiem able to play to his seed, SF, that would be a strong sign for Thiem's chances at US Open.
Wrong question.Monday morning TT madness after a tournament with an unexpected champion
The real question:
Will Thiem ever lose a match again?
He has the seasons 2019, 2020 and 2021 where he can aspire to the aforementioned majors (of course his chance is still much higher in the Parisian clay than in the hard courts, slow but is cement after all, of NY)
The one who plays (Nadal or Djokovic) the Austrian before the final in the next RG will draw "the lucky ticket".
Schwarzenegger now has someone to leave his most famous role on cinema screens:
Ich heiße Thiem!
Curb your enthusiasm.
25.5 years old is rather late to win your first big title.
KhachanovWell... reading through the list of recent winners it ain't bad at all. Apart from Zverev, which player younger than Thiem has won a big one recently?
Khachanov
None, actually. My comment just was to continue keeping our spirits low. After a Fed loss, we should pay respect like this.Well... reading through the list of recent winners it ain't bad at all. Apart from Zverev, which player younger than Thiem has won a big one recently?
My thoughts as well. Was happy to see Thiem pull out the win yesterday. I’m hopeful he’ll be a factor in majors other than the FO moving forward. He gave Rafa a very good match at USO last year.It would be pretty cool if these guys can win some slams now, not gonna lie. But I'll believe it when I see it. Nothing against Thiem
But Thiem has already proven himself in Bo5 on clay with similar redlining (to be sure Miami was his highest raw level to date); he's no Zverev and at 25 starting to get into his stamina prime and of course the serving shown at IW will help Thiem immensely. He (barely) beat Roger today with his ground game redlining.
Keeping up that level of play for 7 Bo5 matches with everything on the line is a whole different beast.
Muster won RG at age 28. Nadal and Djoko take first US Open titles at age 24 and Thiem was much closer than it looked in 2018 run. Thiem also visually the fastest I've seen him play at age 25.5 which is a shock as I'd assumed this time last year would be the latest his speed peak might happen. No need to curb enthusiasm. The tour has changed with Poly strings and its much, much harder to break through at an earlier age as stamina, power, and serve now rate higher than raw speed pushing prime/peak play to a much later age. Federer is a poor example in my book, but even he did not take off until later age. The days of teenage talent ruling the top of the game are over. Thiem will be getting betterer in those three areas for years and years to come, so this is just the beginning of his peak period.Curb your enthusiasm.

Thiem would have absolutely destroyed Monfils:I'm not sure if beating Raonic and Federer in a BO3 is now the touchstone for imminent GS champions these days.
Thiem won all of 3 matches before IW. As the freshest player of the tournament, he was lucky to get a walk over vs. Monfils and to win two close matches vs. Raonic and Federer.
His tennis is fun to watch. But he can burn himself out easily. I'll put him as dangerous opponent for Novak and Nadal in early rounds but not late in a GS.
Well when you have RF as RG contender what were you expecting? Glad to see Federe's game back on track after scary false decline of 2nd half of 2018, but he's no threat at the French. Hopefully Clayerer comes to his senses and plays Madrid this year where he may have his best shot at big title on clay.Sarcasm - the use of irony to mock or convey contempt.
It's obvious you did not consider me in your inaccurate data research samples.yesterday all board was rooting for Fed, now everybody is a Thiem fan.
I said like a few years back that Thiem and Djokovic are the ones who could dig the RG trophy besides Nadal.
If RF could not do it at IW, he does not have any chance in Madrid.Well when you have RF as RG contender what were you expecting? Madrid is faster tho.If RF could not do it at IW, he does not have any chance in Madrid.
But you are not considering the allergy to that surface.Madrid is faster tho.
Sure, his win left me devastated.Great win today for Dominic. He can surely produce some devastating tennis.
What allergy? He's arguably the 2nd best clay player in history, definitely a top 5.But you are not considering the allergy to that surface.

Sure, but a lot of time has passed since, without any revalidation of that status.
