Too funny - complaints at regionals got my automated appeal reversed

With all of the rating talk around here, I thought some of you might get a kick out of this. I'll say up front that I did apologize for causing problems.

I just spoke with the section league coordinator after noticing that my NTRP moved from 3.5 to 3.0.

Seems that there were a lot of people complaining about my 3.5 rating at regionals. I played the spring 3.0 season with a 3.0 "B" rating, and then decided I'd be a guinea pig for the automated appeal process and had my rating moved up to 3.5 "A" after the 3.0 season ended.

My team captain had no problem getting me on the roster for regionals, and I spoke to a local league rep who said as long as I didn't get bumped because of a DQ I was fine.

So anyway, the section coordinator actually recognized my name when I called because she said she had to request to national to bump me down to 3.0. I guess I'll wait for the early start ratings with everyone else to see if I get bumped.

Gotcha. Why would you self-rate up? Didn't know you could do that.

Mainly out of curiousity, and because I didn't care if I got bumped to 3.5. I figured that I may as well go through the process when I didn't care so that if I ever need to do it I'll know what it entails.

The coordinator said that automated appeals are granted either way if your year-end rating is right at the line between the two ratings.

Oh yeah, I also asked her about NTRP tournaments and year-end ratings. She said that it's the decision of each section what NTRP results they want factored into the year-end ratings, and that Florida still includes NTRP tournament results.

I know that was a topic that was debated when Southern section (or was it Texas?) announced they would no longer factor NTRP tournament results into year-end ratings.

Because I was playing in the 3.0 division I suppose. I still got beat in one singles match by the team that advanced to sectionals.

I guess that's where I don't understand the complaints. If my playing had advanced us to sectionals then OK, but does anyone really care if they finish second or fourth at regionals?

Why didn't they just disqualify you, declare you ineligible, whatever?

I mean, how come you can show up and play 3.0 if your rating that dayis 3.5?

Dunno.

I take it from the fact that my automated appeal was granted that I started the year at the top of the 3.0 flight. I think what threw the system off was that I was still listed as 3.0 when I was added to the team and when I played my regular season matches, and the appeal took place between the end of the season and my captain filing the roster for regionals.

DQ'ing is pretty tough at 3.0 and 3.5 for men in my area. Way too many self-rated players in those flights. If the part about someone having to have four matches against computer rated players before they start to impact other computer rated players' NTRP is true then maybe three of the eight singles matches I played this season in 3.0 and 3.5 had any impact on my NTRP.

In fact, I can't think of anyone in my area in 3.0 or 3.5 getting DQ'd during the season in the past two years. A few moved up in early start or year-end, but no DQ's. Like I said, way too many self-rated players, especially in singles.

I really hope I didn't get people too worked up over this. I try not to take this stuff too seriously because if I don't I always start saying things that come back to haunt me. I just want to play tennis, but the whole NTRP thing is such a train wreck that I can't help but comment on it.

In Georgia, and other states I'm sure, the ratings come out mid-year. So when played the Georgia team at the 3.0 level at sectionals, the entire team had a computer rating of 3.5 even though they were playing at 3.0. Bizzare. And they kicked our butts.

The Southern Section this year does not count tournamant results toward the rating. And I think they have stopped giving M ratings derived from Mixed only. I would be happier if all sectionals did it the same way.

I'd be surprised if half of my team and half of the team that beat us to go to sectionals isn't bumped up in the early start ratings.

At the lower levels we need all the match results we can get in order to move up. There are a good number of 3.5 tournament junkies in Florida, so playing tournaments is a good way to move up (at least I think it is, who knows how the actual process works).

I can see keeping NTRP affected by league play only for 4.0 and above, because the number of self-rates at that level is much, much lower.
