In my thread about the federer v. nadal head-to-head, I proposed a metric I called "tournament head-to-head."

The tables below consider tournaments entered by the two players, and compare who outlasted the other more often, and who won more titles.

A few thoughts:
  • The purpose of professional tennis is to advance as far as possible in tournaments. Tournament head-to-head is therefore the most fundamental comparison of two players' head-to-head performance.
  • The beauty of this metric is that it completely eliminates any arguments about strength of competition, because competition is definitionally the same.

  • The numbers conclusively negate the notion that Nadal and Djokovic would have done better than Federer if it weren't for a supposed "weak era." He has comfortably outperformed them in tournaments and majors that they entered with him.

I'll update these a couple of times a season. Please make suggestions for other head-to-heads you'd like to see. I am using my tag list from the match-stats threads here. Please let me know if you wish to be added or removed.
