US Open silly microphone person

What's up with this silly microphone person sitting behind the umpire moving the mic from left to right following the ball?

Folks, it is 2013, four directional mics in each corner and some software to determine the location of the ball with some phase compensation would do this far better.

The guy holding the mic in the Zheng vs Williams match was staring at Venus when the match was 5-5 in the third. It creeped me out, he looked soulless.

Might be a union contract crew requirement. When they tried to bring the off-Broadway show "Rent" to a Broadway theatre a generation ago with its 4 person rock band, they were told by the musicians' union they'd have to pay 15 musicians even if they continued to use 4.

Ball sound was much clearer in the Blake-Ivo match. I could hear the thud of the racket impact very well. Haven't watched much otherwise.
