What is the set-score?

Please help me settle an argument. If it's 30-15, 4-2, the 'game score is "30-15" and the set score is "4-2", right? Some say, "No, the 'game score' is "4-2" because that's the score in games." I even looked in the description of tennis terms in my Tennis Enclyclopedia, nothing. The internet was no help either. They explain how to keep score. I've noticed some ambiguity when people use terms like "set score", "game score", and "match score". So what is the correct interpretation?

I'm like you, I think of the score in the set as the 'set-score'. For most people to give you the game score makes no sense at all. The only other way to interpret it, is if a match had gone 6-3, 2-6, they might say, "one to one" the score of the sets within the match. To reply with something like "30-15" makes no sense no matter how you look at it. BTW, I'm usually asking for the set score to see if they're set is almost done or just beginning. You'd think they'd figure that out. But like your experience, they usually tell me the game score which I'm not interested in.

you explained the score the way i understand it...

the set score is the number of games each player has won.
the game score is the score within a particular game.
the match score is the number of sets each player has won.
the team score is the number of matches each team has won (in league play).

i always try to ask the set score in between games or during change overs so someone doesn't get confused and give me a game score. they'd have to be pretty dumb to say 40-30 when i ask for the score during a change over.

for the people who claim that the game score is 4-2, what do they call the score within a game? just plain 'score'? or 'point score'?

Extrapolating what has been said, that would be the "point score", (although, I've never heard someone use that term.)

i am with you guys who say the "set score" is the score of how many games each person has within that set.

Someone in another thread in "Adult Leagues" quotes "Friend of the Court" as saying:

31. Server announces score. The server shall announce the game score
before the first point of the game and the point score before each subsequent
point of the game.

So that author is calling 'set score', 'game score', and what we'd call 'game score', 'point score'. This can be found in the thread, "Saying the score" (I think). Now what?

This week alone, I learned:

1. When pros show the ball in their hand to their opponent before they serve, doesn't mean that they're trying to get the other guy to hurry up, but means that they're serving with new balls.

2. I should call out the game score instead of point score when I serve the 1st point in a game.

See, good stuff! Of course I also know garbages on the forum when I see them

this makes sense, but it just doesn't seem right. have i really been classifying the score(s) wrong my entire life? can't be!

I just pictured that in my head, and for some reason I find it really funny. I think I'll try that next time. Maybe it'll rattle my opponent.
