What makes a string "powerful"

Carlito

Semi-Pro
Is it the stiffness? Or the resiliency? Or maybe something else? I look at the rsi ratings and TW string data base are hard to interpret when it comes to power. A lot of muiltis are soft but not necessarily powerful. And some polys are stiff but are known as "power" strings.

That being said I am looking for a soft cheep synthetic that is not too powerful? Are the 2 characteristics compatible?

You have many options but I would suggest Prince Original SG or Volkl SG. Tecnifibre also makes a good general syn gut that plays very soft with good durability. Some players really like Gosen and Forten but I have not tried them.
