What you should do to be a winner in amateur tennis and in older categories !!!

You want us to throw the racket at the ball. You should be ashamed. People like you are the reason why millions of tennis players cant achieve anything in tennis. Tennis without control.

I am not sure he is the reason the millions of players can't get anywhere in tennis.

Look I am a fan of pushing, I will shamelessly push for the win and am a big believer in not over hitting and keeping the ball in play. However you don't need to convert to a two handed forehand to do that.

I know plenty of players with epic shot tolerance who hit the one handed shot. You can also hit with modern technique and be steady. Modern technique is all about taking advantage of newer racket technology to increase the amount of topspin. More topspin means more control and a greater margin of safety on shots.

In my first comment I dont say that players should convert to two handed forehand though I think that for most amateur players and in older categories two handed forehand would be better solution. Technique of professional works above some speed of the racket. Most amateur players cant accelerate the head of the racket above that speed. That is why they shouldnt try to copy that technique.

Greg, plenty of people, myself included agree that 2 handed shot is a good alternative for some players.
Nobody laughs at the 2 handed shot.
Nobody says it should be excluded.

What we all say, is that for majority of players, it is easier to master the 1 handed forehand and for these players it is not needed to complicate their life, in particular at amateur level of tennis, which mostly shall:
1. help them with health & fitness
2. bring some fun

while what you are doing, it is not amateur tennis.
you are actually competing. so please stop fooling yourself and admit that what you are doing has nothing to do with old amateur players

I agree that different people have different reasons why they play tennis. The technique which I recommend in my opinion can help most players to get better results in matches. In the first comment in this thread in seven points I wrote about that technique. There is no word about two handed forehand in this first comment.

We play tennis for fun ? It is a great lifetime sport. Unless you are earning your living playing tennis you are playing recreational tennis. If you feel you need to be competitive later in your life instead of teaching your grandkids so be it. There is room for all in this game. To have a debate about spin stroke production is sort of meaningless imo. We all have our own style. Enjoy playing and be thankful you still can. The results have no world meaning so all this seems to be kind of stupid. One plays with spin another plays flat and another is a junk monger. We have all different styles that should keep the game interesting for the participants isnt that enough?

During last 4 years I have won 25 tournaments at national level . My friends often ask me how much I earned from the awards. Then I tell them that they should ask how much I have paid for these tournaments. The better I play in tournament the more I pay. Most expensive are ITF tournaments because then I play only one match a day. I stay in the hotel longer.

Very astute observation. You are obviously a skilled player. The question is can you find say 3 or more players in your area and have a lot of fun with them or do you have to spend a lot of money to get your needs met. I played D1 tennis in college and playplayed a couple years of local tournys in my area, but I was also playing hoops and soccer at the high club level. Had children taught to supplement salary as a teacher built my own court and played with local friend and had fun. Now play with my son on weekends and other seniors occasionally in my area and work with several juniors and my grandkids. Do I need to travel to find competition no. I have much more enjoyment with what I am doiing and just thankful I can at my age

I like to compete. I played last tournament in my city in 1995. For 4 years I was between #2-#4 in polish ranking in my age category. Next year I will play in +60 category and mostly I will play in ITF tournaments. I plan to be in top 50 in ITF ranking. I dont drink alkohol and dont smoke cigaretes. I prefer to spend money on tennis.

This is tennis you can play without split step, without wrist lag, without loose wrist, without great racket head speed, without open stance.
