When Do You See Rafa And Roger Retiring

you have the floor.

have at it and have fun.

I will fire off the first shot:

I think roger will retire at 40 and rafa will hang them up at 32.

these are no ordinary athletes.

If Federer doesn't retire after this year, then it'll be after the 2016 Olympics. I can't see him playing past then.

Nadal is trickier to find out. He seems to be in pain, then come roaring back healthy. I think you're right, 31-32 sounds about when he'll retire.

Hopefully neither will for a long time. I'd love to see 40 year old Federer using his touch and feel to try and get by the younger competitors and Nadal at 35 still bringing his never give up attitude against the more athletic youngsters.

I expect Federer will play for another 3-4 years. Nadal maybe another 5 unless his knees give out.

I think for Nadal it depends on the Slam record.

He can be a strong contender at RG for many years to come, even if he slips elsewhere.

I could see him trying to grab the Slam record at RG, holding off the most talented of the young guard on the surface maybe as far into the future as 2019. It's feasible that the rest of his career could look like this:

14th Slam - RG 2014
15th Slam - RG 2015
16th Slam - RG 2016
17th Slam - RG 2017
loses in 2018
18th Slam - RG 2019
19th Slam - RG 2020
Retires

All hail Rafa's 14 RG titles.

did anybody notice how many 30 year old or older won titles last year?

and it gets even better in doubles. they are winning titles while nearing 40.

nothing wrong with that.

last time I checked they were still playing tennis on the red clay.

in fact far more tennis is played in any one given match---on the average--- on the red clay than in a match on any other surface.

Here's another path:

2014 - RG
2015 - AO, loses RG to Djokovic
2016 - RG, Wimbledon
2017 - No Slam, new gen flourishing
2018 - RG
2019 - No Slam
2020 - RG
retires with 19 Slams at age 34.

I never even began to insinuate that there was.

Here's another path:

2014 - No Slam, Djokovic completes Career Slam
2015 - RG Wimbledon
2016 - RG
2017 - No Slam
2018 - No Slam, considers retirement, says he'll give it maybe one last shot next clay court season.
2019 - RG, retires like Sampras did after 2002 US Open, with 17 Slams.

Here's a Federer path:

2014 - No Slam
2015 - No Slam
2016 - No Slam, no Olympic Gold
2017 - From beyond the grave wins Wimbledon
2018 - Thinks it's worth carrying on and has delusions of grandeur following his Wimbledon win - No Slams
2019 - No Slams
2020 - No Slams, retires at Basel on 18.

I can't help but feel like this 3rd kid from Federer is going to finally get him to close out a career.

So my prediction is at the end of 2015.... although as I type that, then it seems like if he can make that, would it be that much more to get to that 2016 Olympics? And if he makes that wouldn't he just go ahead and close out that season.. why wouldn't you play the USO if you'd trained enough to make the olympics?

With Rafa I feel pretty strongly that he's not going to quit on his own terms. Unfortunately I think one of these injuries at some point is going to really flare up hard and as he continues to age one of these times he's just not going to be able to come back after 7 mo. off and go right back to dominating.

Pretty much spot on...if Fed has bad results this year especially in the slams this might be it, but if he performs well OR can withstand some subpar results, it's clear he is truly making 2016 a priority. And that would be his last year I think.

Nadal, who can say? Next year he might be gone another 7 months, then suddenly decide enough is enough. Then again he might return from a 3 month layoff and win 3 slams in a row. Either way I think he leaves around 31

I cant see Rafa leaving until 32.

he is going to get that slam record sooner or later but the lure of the global spotlight is too strong for most of these players. they pretty much leave on their own terms and then resurface fairly quickly on the senior tour.

Rafa will go out like Soderling. We will always be wondering as to when he will come back , when only he would know that he is never coming back.

Federer has an easy playing style and he is still plenty damn good.

he is also making a bit of a move to play more doubles.

I believe he hangs around the sport until he is 40 or 41 and then he starts playing the seniors.

He is still good to be top 8..but not for winning slams..Whats changed from last year? All he did is beat Tsonga and out of form Murray? Its too soon to say he is back as a serious contender for slams..
He will play 2 more years as he is raking around 70 million dollars..eventually he will retire because of poor results hurting his ego..Winning 1 slams in 6-7 years will not sit pretty..
so I am guessing 34 max 35 with no more slams.
Honestly, quitting singles and playing doubles and making 20 million instead of 70 and seeing younger players do all exhos is never going to happen.

Nadal case is lot more unpredictable.
One more big injury break can end his career by 30 or prolong till 34 but taking big breaks regularly...depends on how he responds. And his form too. He is not going to hang around for 3-4 years without winning slams..
Thats why picked 32 as it appeared the safest option

who said he can win slams?

he cant even win masters events anymore. how many tournaments did he win last year?

the man loves the sport and just wants to keep playing.

now with that said, I can see him making another semi at Wimbledon with a kind draw.

he better go to Lourdes, France and pray for a miracle that he does not end up in Rafa's 1/2 at wimby.

Rafa has a score to settle with him.

anyway Federer can make the semis at Wimbledon if he can avoid Rafa.

all bets are off in the final. Federer still has a massive game but he cant beat andy, nadal, and nole in a slam final again. them days are over now.

The biological passport will be fully up and running as of this September.

One way or another, I suspect next year will be Nads' last.

Will he then have bionic knees?

I'm with you on this one. I think one more RG title is all he's got with his style of play. The HC swing this year will be telling.
