Where on the handle to put lead tape

Let's say I wanted to add lead tape underneath the grip on the handle that came with the racquet. Can I put the lead tape outside the original grip, instead of underneath it, and then put overgrip over the lead tape and the handle? (The reason is, I don't want to remove the original grip that came with the racquet, as I may mess things up)

You can, but it's not rocket science removing the original grip, adding lead to the pallet, rewinding the grip back on, and adding an OG atop.
If you have the skills to add an OG, you have the skills to rewind the original grip also.
Now, IF the orignal grip is a sticky mess as you start to unwind it, then your idea is valid.

Yep and if you cant get the door open then just put it on the bottom. Coins work best for this application.

Took me a bit to figure out the prince trap door. You have to lift it up and then SLIDE. It doesnt pop open.

Sorry, I thought OP wanted to add LEAD TAPE to his handle. I wouldn't add LEAD TAPE inside the pallet.

great advice and thats exactly what i do when trying a new setup on court..

blue tack and 5 pence pieces (UK coin) and just add or remove the blue tack to suit.

but the OP might want the lead tape on the handle but i dont like all that mass above my hand as it just makes the stick feel very sluggish IMO

adding to the trap door gives the illusion of the stick feeling lighter than it is but its up to the OP on what feels right to him:)

You got it right lee but I thought gary was talking about putting the tape in the inside of the trapdoor. There was a thread on that in the last few weeks IIRC. you just cut it tiny and put many many layers.

Should work great if you are adding a few grams.

If you put it in the pallet well have fun getting the lead tape out. Blue tack if Gary meant putting it inside the pallet might work too as you could remove it.

I suggested the bottom because the trap door is harder.

Geez, I figured YOU would want it under the grip, since you use 5 1/8th grip sizes....:):)

Its true. :)

But everyone is different. I still have some sticks with pennies on them. That way I can build up the handle and if it is too light I just add the pennies. Though I am moving to silicone and only have one racket that has the pennies.

i just thought the OP would find it easier to add blue tack to the trap door rather than removing the grip as he seemed not to no how to re-apply the grip or how and where to add the lead tape!!!!

ive added to other sticks 30g+ of blue tack inside of the trap door and yes its very very easy to remove...

i just wanted to give the OP an easier option as with all the info on this board on adding lead tape and where can be mind boggling as it once was to me lol

sorry to you and leeD for any confusion :)

No need I think I got what you were saying and IMHO I would rather do what you proposed vs adding lead tape to a grip. Over time I think the adhesive and pressure would mess the grip up anyhow so its best to either remove the grip and put the tape on the pallet or try your method or just put it on the other side.

30g. Now you are talking. Maybe I missed it but it was JUST blutak? Well if so that has to be pretty easy and I didnt know it weighed that much. Might be a nice alternative to silicone. How far up the handle do you get it??

I have it in my head that the op is just adding 5g but not sure.

totally agree on messing the grip up and i can imagine it moving about on the pallet which doesnt appeal at all.
i have tried strips length ways running from the bottom to the top on the pallet and also wrapped around 7inches up from the butt but neither felt right and as said in my previous post the stick felt heavy in my hand and sluggish and its not what you want when you purposely put it there to make the stick more H/L

yes i indeed added 30g of blutak to an old LM8 to get it around 6pts H/L if my memory serves me correct,
measure out 30g then roll into a sausage and stuff it into the handle,if it gets stuck a little help from a screw driver,
even if left for a long time as i did with the LM8 its easy to get out,the blutak does dry but not right through and there is just a crust formed on top,
to remove just stick the screw driver down the handle and twist and turn so it sticks and remove, there might be the odd bit left but nothing major....:)

P.S and yes i would use blutak over silicone any day as im sure the blutak as the silicone would add some vibration reduction but im not sure...plus its a sight easier to remove

How about letting the stringer replace the original grip for you? I wouldn't place the lead tape in the replacement grip because its lead?
