Which commentators hate Rodge?

I was watching the first 20 minutes of coverage last night on ESPN (when they were talking about how Fed wouldn't continue his semi streak and how Rafa wont defend the title) before going to practice, and i was thinking, these commentators really hate Fed.

I mean, Brad Gilbert personally hates the guy because i think Feds the only guy who outsmarted the coaching guru (Wimby 2004 Final vs Roddick rain delay).

Then Cahill doesn't like Fed because they had some sort of argument or something around this time last year when Fed was testing him out as a possible coach.

Bud Collins, whenever he's on, completely disregards Fed, probably because of that time in 2006 when Fed refused to give him an interview

Idk, i mean not everyone supposed to like the guy, but i think they should give the guy credit and not count him out because he showed them up.

Cahill likes Fed and they never had an argument. Its the schedule and the number of weeks Roger wanted that Cahill couldnt give. Also it was Cahill who approached Roger for a trial. Not the other way round.
Cahill is just basically stating the obvious at this point.

its amazing that I saw that on tv too. I did not get anywhere near the impresssion you did. As far as I know, all of them seem to like Fed. But, at some point his record has to end. That seemed to be the point they were working on, and in addition, there are a lot of players playing well at the moment.

uhm..........no.
Roger tried out with him during a course of few days and they tried working out a schedule but it didnt work.Thats it.

well, i may be wrong with cahill, but i remember that cahill claimed something, and roger contradicted him.

DARREN CAHILL ON MORE FEDERER VS. NADAL, MAJORS FOR ANDY RODDICK

Former pro, Super Coach and ESPN 2 commentator Darren Cahill spoke with reporters via conference call on Tuesday (Darren was calling in from Wednesday, Down Under.) Much of the conversation revolved around the WTA (click here for more on that) but he still had plenty to say about Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and the rest of the ATP pack. Here are some excerpts from the call:

I asked him to reflect on his short-term gig coaching Roger Federer after last year’s Australian Open - and how he sees things going for the World No. 1 in the future.

CAHILL: “Spending the 10 days with him (in Dubai last March) was certainly a great experience for me – to jump inside the mind of probably the best tennis player who ever lived was a learning experience. I left there with no doubt that he was still a force to be reckoned with. The guy has an incredible tennis mind. He’s a student of the game. He loves to talk about tennis and watch tennis 24 hours a day. He certainly had his head well around what needed to be done for him to get himself back into the position he’s in now. He was on the right track before I went there, he was still on the right track when I left. There’s no doubt in my mind that he’s still the number one guy – the number one player in the world – and he’s in the position to win many, many more titles.”

So much for Cahill hating Roger

I seriously can't think of any reason to hate Roger other than being jelous of him. Even the *******s have no real reason to hate Rog.

I don't believe their.."masterpieces" derive from hatred. Most likely from a pitiful effort to draw interest, being sensational or simple bandwagoning.

Yeah, that's true. It's not 'hatred', but rather being sensationalist indeed, longing for the champ to finally fall. Which is to be expected from the mindset of a journo.

LOL, anyone who doesn't think Rog is the ultimate gift of the gene pool to humankind and will win the next 100 slams is automatically labeled as a 'hater' by some here. A WITCH!

I don't understand how you think they hate him from just those comments. All these guys I'm sure have said great things about fed. It's normal to think that fed will not continue his semifinal streak. At one point it will end and it might end at the AO who knows. Just merely making observations doesn't mean "hate".

They have no reason to "hate" him true as hate is too strong of an emotion to have towards someone who merely hits a fuzzy ball over the net for a living.

However to merely dislike a tennis player or(any other athlete for that matter)it doesn't really take a whole lot, maybe they don't like his golden purse and cardigan stuff he pulls at Wimbledon,or maybe he wins too much or he cries too much etc.

It's the same when people dislike Nadal for picking his butt or his fistpumps or something,as I said you don't really need a big reason to dislike a tennis player.

That's true, however I do find it a bit annoying when they're predicting it all the time so when it finally happens(for example his SF streak finally ending)they look like geniuses and people forget all the times they got it wrong.

I mean everything comes to an end,if you keep predicting the same thing every year/every tourney it's bound to happen eventually.

I agree with mandy01. I think Gilbert's perceived Federer hatred is nothing more than a greater appreciation for Nadal. I could've guessed that a guy like Gilbert would lean towards a player like Nadal over a player like Federer, and I hear a lot of praise from him about Fed as well. I used to sense some Connors attitude towards Fed when he was calling Wimbledon for the BBC, but nothing too egregious. He may've been feeling his consecutive weeks at #1 record getting taken by Fed, but who knows? Bud Collins seems like he may be dementing a bit, so I take everything he says with a grain of salt.

lmao. How I wish the reason they were whining was because fed is constantly beating nadal.

Heh,me too,I wouldn't mind their whining at all if it were for that reason :).

I'd love to see Roger correct that H2H a bit in the future, maybe win another Wimbledon final against Nadal or their first USO final.

Yep, that's my main beef with those guys as well.

I think hate is a strong word.

Part of it is just the rules of sports journalism. You need a story. If everyone agreed on how wonderful Roger is and that he can reign as long as he wants to, where is the story. They need drama and a story so someone has to play that role.

Part of it is personal preference. Brad may appreciate what Roger has done, but that's not to say he should like everything about Roger. He just prefers Nadal. We will never know if that was because Roger slighted him (asked about BG as a possible coach, Roger said "No way, no" sometime back). The senile old guy obviously has a thing for people closer to his golden years (Rod Laver) and conveniently forgets the all-grass playing surfaces when mentioning Laver's calendar slam as the biggest achievement in men's tennis.

Finally, I think even as much as we may detect no love for Rodge, the guys laying on the butter are irritating too (Ted Robinson). Appreciation for Roger (or any other player) is best when the commentators stay neutral most of the time and give measured, accurate and well-timed compliments.

well said. Even I'm not a fan of the the "ass kissing" some of these guys do. I cringe when I hear some commentators drool over fed and go gaga over a shot that actually isn't that amazing or I've seen him hit before.

Yep, and I hope I never have to hear stupid epithets again like the "Maestro" for Roger, "the bull/raging bull" for Nadal or "Smartest tennis player/Thinking player" about Murray.

It was refreshing like years ago. Now its just plain irritating.

totally right!Expressions like:the ball landed like a butterfly with broken legs,Gonzastic!!!,or Russian Revolution!!! are on the other hand very refreshing and commentators should keep them up by all means!:D XD

Unless, ofcourse, Roger retires while holding the SF streak.
