Which Grand Slams tends to produce the best finals?

An examination of grand slam finals within the last 10 years, appears to indicate that the Australian Open tends to produce the best finals, in both WTA & ATP. In contrast, the US Open has been quite disappointing, with the last 3 set womens final being in 2016. I feel like players are usually pretty fatigued and exhausted towards the end of the season, and therefore their level is usually lower. Also, the higher bounce at the AO & also Roland Garros, means longer rallies and generally more epic matches occurring.
Although, it really does depend on the players, as most rafa-roger matches have been epic regardless of the surface (except for this years final).

RG has the worst finals, thanks to Rafa.
Wimbledon 2007-09 was epic stuff. Can't remember any other slam with 3 epic finals in a row.

Recent history:

AO > Wimbledon >>>>>>>>>> USO >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> RG
This is mostly due to the fact that Nadal was so dominant that most FO finals became a foregone conclusion. If we are considering the finals from let’s say 2000 onwards it is clearly Wimbledon > AO. Wimbledon had the Rafter Goran final which was probably the most epic final of all in recent history as well as the epic five Setters between 2007 and 2009. The AO has the Agassi Schuetller final, Johansson winning against Safin and also those glorious snooze festes with Djokovic and Murray. 2009, 2012 and 2017 was epic i admit but let’s face it no final where Murray is involved can be remotely epic and the AO even had five of them.

The AO me thinks. I mean they really try so hard to make the tournament better every year. We've seen some amazing finals there. Nole vs. Rafa this year, and back in 2912. Fed winning in 2017. Murray, anybody? Even youngsters tend to do something special in Australia.
Oh, I love the KIa man. What happened to him :-D? His speeches are priceless .

RG can get very predictable but that's thank to the best clay player ever. Nadal (y).

Wimbledon is Wimbledon. I guess the biggest dream of any tennis player. I dislike cues and the fact you can't really get tickets in advance unless you are The Royal. It's stupid.

The USO crowd is annoying. Too annoying IMO. Sometimes I feel I don't know what the heck they are watching. Is it tennis or NBA, or NFL? Yes, we have seen a lot of great matches there too, but THE CROWD???

Over the last 10 years :

AO : 3x 5 sets - 3x 4 sets - 4x 3 sets
RG : 5x 4 sets - 5x 3 sets
WB : 2x 5 sets - 3x 4 sets - 5x 3 sets
US : 2x 5 sets - 5x 4 sets - 3x 3 sets

If we consider 5 sets finals as the measure of epicness then AO > US > WB > RG.
I think I agree with this, as AO has produced so much classics lately and RG and WB had a lot of disappointing finals. (excepting WB14 and RG15)

No 5 sets finals at RG since 2004... it's been 15 years !

Easily the Australian open. Despite who has won or lost or how they won or lost, i've enjoyed watching them all. I can't remember the last time a final there didn't entertain for whatever reason, even this year. Wimbledon is probably the next best. US open and RG have had some of the most boring finals in history and almost every one of them is forgettable.

The US Open really only has one epic five-set final in this millennium though (2009). Even as a Murray fan, the 2012 final is more of a meme than a classic.

In contrast, Wimbledon has classics in 2008, 2009, 2007, and 2014 in fairly recent history. So I'd probably place Wimbledon finals over US Open finals in recent history.

my two cents

The AO has been the most enjoyable Slam of the last few years with generally the better finals, imo. That can change, naturally, but it's been the most entertaining and best contested Slam of recent years.

Both had Anderson though. I still shiver at the thought.

Aight.

I don't believe it's fair to assume a large part of Slam final qualtiy variance is due to which Slam it is. RG producing beatdown finals is more due to Nadal than due to RG for example. Unless people want to argue that peak Nadal on clay isn't hilariously better than peak Fed at Wimbledon or something.

An examination of the last decade tends to indicate that the US Open produces the best finals, which makes the US Open the most prestigious hard court Slam. 7 great USO finals of the last decade:

1. Del Potro-Federer (US Open 2009)

2. Nadal-Djokovic (US Open 2010)

3. Djokovic-Nadal (US Open 2011)

4. Murray-Djokovic (US Open 2012)

5. Nadal-Djokovic (US Open 2013)

6. Djokovic-Federer (US Open 2015)

7. Wawrinka-Djokovic (US Open 2016)

A) No
B) How did you get from enjoying some finals directly to it being more prestigious as a tournament than AO?
C) Oh yeah, you're a Nadal fan.

Sorry but don’t know if serious. Wawrinka agaibst Djokovic was the least epic I can think of albeit those maybe where a mug was involved. Djokovic should not have been in that final to begin with. The Nadal Djokovic finals weren’t particularly epic either, Djokovic against Murray is never epic even if it is a five setter. Djokovic against Federer I never had doubt who would win it as at this stage Novak already owned Federer in slams due to the age difference. Leaves is with 2009 so exactly one epic final. However, compared to AO 2009 and 2012 even this one pales.

In the last 15 years I have it thus:-

Aus - 3 (2009, 2017, 2018)
RG - 2 (2006, 2011)
Wim - 6 (2004, 2007, 2008, 2012, 2014. 2015)
USO - 4 (2005, 2010, 2013, 2016)

I think RG's 2 victories could each go to Wimbledon and the US Open quite easily, but it's not going to change anything overall.
