I would like to see a best of 5 final in Grand Slams for women. Not in semi final, not in quarter final, just in the final. In best of 3 finals, the matches are rather one sided and usually is over in an hour or so. I feel like a best of 5 final would entertain the crowd more.
What do you think?

Best of 5. Make them earn their money.

No... Not for the prize money. Best of 5 because it's a better contest and it's more likely for better player to prevail.

It should be a meritocracy and prize money should be based on gate receipts, TV contracts (based on ratings), sponsorship, etc... I don't care how many sets they play. They earn whatever people are willing to pay to watch them play. I can play a thousand sets of tennis and no one will pay to watch me play.

Too bad the grand slams for Men's and Ladies are not held on different weeks. It should then be obvious what prize $$$ each deserve.

The USGA held both the Men's and Ladies Open Championships at Pinehurst 2 this year 2 weeks apart. The purse for the Men, $9M. For the Ladies, $4M. Fair and equitable IMO.

On the flip side... I would also argue women deserve more $$$s for Figure Skating championships. Meritocracy.

I know it's not a Federer vs Nadal thread but I'd be interested to hear the opinions of TTW Posters on this topic. Even if you disagree with me, please explain why. Thanks.

Best of 3 for two reasons:
1. There is no point making women play best of 5. They don't have the stamina and endurance of men and the quality would significantly drop. Do you want to wath again an Evert/Austin slow motion tennis from BPs ancient video clips? No thanks.
2. I believe that all matches in a single tournament have to be played under same rules. I.e. if first round match is best of 3 than the final has to be played using the same set of rules. No rule changes from round to round. Makes no sense at all.

You don't think they have the stamina to play one best of 5 match in a Grand Slam? I'm sure I've seen them play 3 hour long matches.

No, I dont think so.... do you want to watch moonball rallies that noone has ever witnessed before? That is what you'll see later on in the match if it goes 4 or 5 sets, with MOST of the woman.

Would've been more interesting today.. What was that, 60 minutes of tennis for a slam check of 7 figures? Haha

They should require of all female tennis players to pass a fitness test. I am sure our new old Wimbledon champion would fail.

Sadly very few womens finals are actually competitive. So if it's going to be a straight beatdown I'd rather it last an hour rather than an hour and a half :p

They really should with a TB in the last set. Less than an hour is way too short for a major final.

sig: "the head to head…..blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah, blah..blah."

It wouldn't change the suckness we have to go through in the majority of finals like today.

The men have to step up to bet of five in the Slams; the women should as well. These are the most coveted titles...they should be harder to win.

Agree that the women would need to play best of five for the whole tournament.

As far as your first point goes, it's hard to know just how that would work out. The women are competing against each other, not the men, so they'd be working more in the same margins of strength and endurance through longer match formats.

They might also have to play a more attacking game to get away from too many long rallies when facing potential five-setters each round. That could be a GREAT thing considering what we saw in the ladies' final today. It could theoretically push the women's game beyond one dimensional baseline play.

I am okay with it. No mens' single matches are played on women final day. No frustrating delays due to WTA before ATP.

Best of 5: I'm tired of matches that end in an hour or less.

Who knows? Maybe Genie would have made it a closer match if it were a best of 5.

I don't think i can handle listening to Sharapova or Azarenka in a best of 5 match

So Kvitova needed just 55 minutes to earn as much as Novak who took 4 hours to beat Federer in the final.

they didn't earn anything....if there was bug going around that forced genie and fed to pull out they would still recieve their checks. so no one is earning anything.

I say yes, but shorten the men's matches to best of three leading up to the final as well.

Between 84 and 98, the women's year-end final was best of five.

Ex.: 1990 Monica Seles def. Gabriela Sabatini 6–4, 5–7, 3–6, 6–4, 6–2

Disagree. The physical toll it takes leading up to the final is an advantage to players able to close out matches in less sets. I like that.

Plus it makes slams different.
