Forehand was Soderling’s best attribute. Thiem is an all around solid player with tremendous endurance. Since I believe their hypothetical match would be very close, gotta give it to Soderling’s forehand.

This. Thiem’s best attribute is his movement, which was Soderling’s weakness.

There's so much more to FH than just power: on the run, angle, lobs, pace variety, etc.
Thiem is terrific on the run. I don't remember anything of Soderling.
Thiem is also terrific at creating angles. Angle is more prominent now than a decade ago when Soderling played.
He varies his FH quite a bit. His standard is heavy topspin, but he flattens out for winners, and throws up deep high balls when he's out of position.

Thiem’s swing is far off though. It’s massive as well.

its a large loop swing but stays completely on the right side of his body
so thiems would be atp i guess

Maybe, but not substantially better than his other attributes, like speed and endurance. Not like Delpo. Do you think Thiem has a top five forehand?

I like Soderling for this because he could flatten the forehand out into a doomsday drive that tore through the court with irresistible force
Thiem's stock FH has the tornado spin and power combo but he basically always hits the same ball with varying degrees of "ya-HUUAEEEYYHHH", and he doesn't drive the shot as well as Soderling imo

If this was good technique, more players on the men's tour would hit like this. But they don't. Because it isn't. It would pass on the women's tour.
Come to me when Thiem forehand blows Oldal off the court on PC court. Soderling' WTA forehand did it with peak Nadal - so I take it.
