Why are commentators so biased towards the williams?

i was watching the aussie open a few days ago and i heard ******** enberg talking about the serena vs jelena match, he said something like "serena lost today, was it because she didnt care, or she wasnt in to it, had a bady day, and so on and so on", or maybe it was just because jelena played better.

With Shriver and Carillo, I think it's because they know the Williams very well personally, and they want to kind of diminish the severity of losses because they like Venus and Serena.

I think a very small part of the bias is legit based on past performance. We are talking about 8-time (Serena) and 6-time (Venus) slam champions. For the most part, along with Henin, they have been the standard for the past 7 or 8 years. It's hard for the commentators to imagine that they are on the downside of their careers, and thus are always looking for excuses.

Also, there's the simple fact that they are Americans and arguably still television draws for the casual tennis fans. It only makes sense for the commentators to pump them up to keep them as marketable entitites that the casual viewer will watch.

I don't understand why people have to bring nationality into it so much. I'm American, but most of my favorite players are from other countries. I personally can't stand the Williams sisters and it has nothing to do with their color. I'm a big fan of Blake and he's black. I just can't stand the Williams sister's style of play and they always come off very arrogant in interviews, especially Serena.

It's a matter of degree, I guess. But other than Murray, there's really no Brits out there, men or women. So whatever bias there is on BBC is usually pretty short-lived!

If you watched the match clearly you would know that Serena was not playing her best. She was clearly upset during her morning warm-up. And it continued through to her singles match. Not only this but her serving was not on target - which made her lose her doubles match as well. You can check her transcript interview about it.

She herself was unhappy and she was hitting her thighs, making her move her feet. But to no avail. If she was at her best compared to Jelena at her best then Serena would win.

But being a champion you have to be better on the day and credit to Jelena for being so consistent -_- consistent in calling the trainer as well.

It may seem that way only because the Williams sisters are pretty high ranked & have been around for a long time. I don't believe that deep down, the commentators want to say good things about them or give them credit for much. They figure they have to say something halfway positive at times or else, it'll look like they are racists or something, which in reality they all are.

And for bluetrain4 who stated that Carillo & Shriver REALLY like them, you've got to be kidding. I don't know about you or anyone else, but I can see the underlying tone of the ways Shriver & Carillo talk about the Williams sisters. They are both some racist asses & Carillo is the worst of them all!

Yup, Jelena played well enough to beat Serena but didn't bother showing up for the Sharapova match. If I were the commentators I would have suspected something was wrong as well. Yeah, there was something wrong with Jelena's back alright, her BACKside. It was getting spanked.
