Why are the All American Tournaments called that when they are not….

Looking at the selection criteria for the upcoming All American Tournaments it is surprising that in the main draw of 32 players only 8 spots are set aside for all Americans . For some reason 12 spots are given by virtue of Regional rankings ( 1 per region ) . 3 spots are given to different wild card selections and 1 to the National Summer Championships winner. Plus of course 8 qualifiers.

If the Regional awards were given by reference to the pre season rankings then there would be some logic in that ( they would probably be mostly All Americans ) but they are not. They are awarded based on last year’s regional rankings.

Now we already have the National Fall Championships selected almost entirely by Regional performance. So why select the All American Championships in almost the same way ? Shouldn’t entry be to reward All Americans ? Otherwise call it something else !
