Why is Del-Potro slicing his backhand so much?

Seriously, against Simon in Marseilles, it seemed like 75% of backhands were slices.

Same here in Dubai.

Is it a lack of confidence in his 2hbh? Or has he been working on his slice especially? Not sure why he would choose to do that...

For a big man, he is playing very pusher-like tennis off the backhand wing.

Delpo seems to play too passive too often, IMO. With his power, I'd like to see him play more aggressive.

Practicing his slice isn't the worst thing for him to do in smaller events. He had a bad result in Australia but won Rotterdam. What he really needs in the future is better results in the Masters events if he wants to continue climbing the rankings.

He is quoted today saying he still has pain in his wrist. Not good.

I wondered about that. That would probably explain why he doesn't crank it up as often.

But, if he can't turn it loose like he did in the 2009 US Open, he has no chance. He can't beat the top guys playing topspin from the baseline. He has to bludgeon them off the court like he did Federer in '09. That he is capable of when healthy and confident.

he has been slicing more since sometime last year from what i can see.

he is working on his game which is a good thing and means he knows he needs to work on things..:)

del potro with power AND more variety would increase his chances of extra vamos.

it's a much more efficient stroke that conserves energy and is reliable. it does have some tactical benefit as well.

Can you get the same amount of power and placement from a one handed backhand compared to a double handed backhand?

which of his wrists is injured?

yes, if you are federer, gasquet, wawrinka, etc...

dunno, he had a minor problem hitting his backhand last autumn which wasnt his surgery arm..

theres a little video of del potro on the 'atp tour' website, he mentions his arm in passing but then goes on about wanting to win majors this year so it cant be too bad whatever.

del po needs a softer racket and to do a gut hybrid with his poly strings so he can save his wrist and his career.

Is Delpo's form really that bad and with too much wrist? Anybody know how he injured his wrist??

And you were saying wrist pain on the 2hbh? That's very odd.

^^^ on his fh side his wrist does tend to snap back a lot on his forward swing. Not sure if that was the cause though.
