Wilson blade 98s bs 16x19

I recently started playing with a blade 18x20 after using a RF97 black. I love the weight, plow and stiffness of the pro staff but decided to give the blade series a try. The v7 was great for serving, but had too much flex on ground strokes. I added some lead tape to the v6 18x20 and started beating players I would always lose to. So decided to make the switch to blade. I would like a little more spin, so thought about the 98s. I can not find any 16x19 in my grip size. Has anyone used those racquets? How did it perform?

If you're talking about the v6 Blade, the "S" version is 18X16. I string for one person who uses it, and he is surprisingly a pretty flat hitter but likes the pop the stringbed gives him with Element 1.25. As far as I know, there is no "S" version for the current model.

Yeah, it’s v6. I don’t like how much flex the new model has. I wish they didn’t change that so much between v6 and v7

The Blade 98S still has 18 mains, and has pretty good control. It also has spin potential. When I played the Pro Staff 97S, I had more control with it than the Pro Staff 97. I would probably still be using it, if it had the same balance as the 97. You can always put a larger gauge string on the crosses, if you want a little depth more control.

Did you put a higher tension for the crosses? I like higher tension for more control. I have the crosses at 57 and 55 or 56 for the mains. Used a control/spin for mains and luxilon ALU for crosses. In theory I should get good spin and control with some extra power.

Like you I didn't like how flexible the Blade (in my case the 16x19) felt. Combined with the fact that it feels a little cumbersome I just didn't like this compared to Pro Staffs. The 98S actually felt less flexible and surprisingly stable for its weight but also very soft compared to the Pro Staffs. Spin is great with the 98S and power is decent. Just a bit light for me.

Yeah, I played with the v6 18x20 blade and after adding some lead tape, I loved it. The RF97 black is the perfect weight and stiffness. Will modify the 98s to match the RF97 black and should be in business. The blade is a little more forgiving, and that helped me beat players I was not able to with the RF97.
