WTA field about to improve again

I really feel the womens tennis field is on the verge of getting decent again and about to improve. Here is why:

-Clijsters has returned. The fact she has been back only a month and won a slam lets you know all she needs to know. I am not saying she is going to completely dominant but she could well be that #1 player the WTA needs. Someone who will try enough in the non slam tournaments (hello Serena) and be able to win some slams with that, to be a true and worthy and respected #1 and put this crazy scenario of Mrs. tank all non slam events vs Mrs. cant win a slam to rest. At the very least she adds a quality and proven top player to the mix, and she is certainly a valid contender to win slams. She seems hungry to fulfill alot of her previously unfulfilled potential.

-Henin could well return soon. We dont know this yet but the rumours are getting louder and with Kim's seemingly successful return to the tour that can only spur Henin on that much more. What a huge boost for the womens game it would be to have a champion of her stature return, especialy if she too is able to return to top form.

-Wozniacki and Oudin. These 2 players show great potential. Wozniacki may be a pusher to some but she knows how to win matches. There is alot to like about her game and she is so young that she can only get better from here. I have no doubt watching her that she was it takes to be a future slam winner. Oudin really does she has the hunger, the court smarts, and the weapons to be a contender in the coming years too and give the U.S a contender once Venus and Serena age out of contention completely (I am not saying she will be as great as the Williams, dont get me wrong).

-Sharapova is obviously going through a difficult period right now. However she is putting alot of effort into this comeback, and after several months back has shown some signs of recent improvement is a positive. Continued improvement in her return to form could eventually take her back the top 10 and a bonafide contender again which would be great for the womens game.
Even with 19 double faults she nearly beat the eventual quarterfinalist and player who easily beat Dementieva the previous round, and she made a tier 1 final right before that. Positive signs.

As for some of the others. Well hopefully Azarenka realizes she has to do more than just bash the ball if she ever going to be a champion and takes heed of Wozniacki and Oudin's performances at this U.S Open. Hopefully if the depth improves and the expectations lower Safina can relax and not feel overburdened by pressure and having to prove herself which could lead to an eventual slam title. Then if that happens even with heightened expectations again a slam title under belt could make greatly improve her mental game at the big events. Maybe Dementieva will get over the hump and also develop a better mentality in the future from that. Kuznetsova has won 2 slams, maybe she can finally start being more consistent and less of a headcase (ok I am wishing for too much now probably). Stosur also showed potential this year, I think she could surprise some people and make some more runs in the coming years.

It will improve. Serena can knock Dinara off the top soon, as you said we have great young stars who need to break through (Cirstea, Wozniacki, Azarenka, Oudin etc.), Sharapova is improving bit by bit (you also mentioned Oudin's win over her was not easily given), Clijsters is back in the Top 20, Henin might return and who knows who else might return. I'm excited for the 2010 season, who knows what we'll see?!

What the frak? Serena just lost a lot of points and will not be #1 any time soon.

I don't want to sound very pessimistic here, but a few good players won't solve the lack of depth in the women's game.. The women's tour needs a lot of new talented women to solve that problem. It's not like suddenly the firsts 4 rounds in a women's grand slam have gotten interesting.

Kim coming back and winning USO is plenty enough for me to care fro WTA again. Also hope Penneta continues her success in 2010,I loved her match against Zvonareva at USO this year(the way she saved those MPs was amazing, pure guts).

Depending on their motivation & fitness, I would like to see both Henin & Hingis come back. :)

How's that going to happen? I wouldn't be surprised if Serena didn't win another title in the rest of 2009.

I still don't understand how Venus has enough points to be #3? It's seemed like she's had an awful season?

If Serena puts the effort in she could eventually knock Dinara off. Serena has like nothing to defend in this part of the season and if the foot fault fiasco was a decent wake up call to her, she'll hopefully put in some effort. Besides, Dinara's on the down by the looks of it, if she wins minimal points with some fair results here and there, and Serena performed well throughout she could eventually be knocked off. Besides, it will most likely be next year that Dinara gets knocked off.

Yes, WTA needs a Great White Hope.

Womens tennis needs depth and an improved standard of play which it doesnt have right now. This is what womens tennis had this year:

-Serena play worse than 2008 yet win 2 majors for the first time since 2003 by virtual default
-Slamless jokes like Safina, Jankovic, Dementieva continue to embarass themselves
-Kuznetsova remain the up and down headcase she has always been
-Venus fade away further on all surfaces except grass
-A player making a comeback after a nearly 3 year retirement win her 2nd ever slam in only her 3rd tournament back
-Sharapova not able to return to being a real contender again yet

Well...it couldn't possibly get any worse, could it?

Hopefully we'll see the emergence of several young stars (mainly Oudin and Wozniacki), the reemergence of a few GS champs (Sharapova, Clijsters and Henin) and continued success from the game's best (Serena and Venus). And career-ending injuries to Safina, Dementieva and Kuznetsova. I'll definitely watch that.

I love how you end it with a bang. :)
