Yonex RDS family is driving me nuts

I've got the RDS 003 and the RDS 001 MP. Both are strung with Topspin CF 17 at 58 mains, 56 crosses. What's driving me nuts is some days the 001 MP works best for me, others the 003. I find the 003 to be more comfortable and since its a 1/2 oz lighter, easier to swing. The 001 feels stiffer, but the lower power means more shots fall in play when I'm off a bit. The slightly shorter length also works better in doubles. However the heavier weight tends to wear on me in long matches.

So, does the 002 split the difference between these two? Its roughly the same weight as the 003, but the same length and head size of the 001 MP. Is it time for an extended demo of the 002 (not the Tour, the regular one).

Thanks

Hi Netman, cousin Louis here...
I like (am actually using) the 002 Tour and did not like the 002...I think the designers did the 002 tour from the ground up and the regular 002 was an afterthought...

rather than getting some new racquets why dont you just stirng your tension lower or get a soft string and jsut work on physical fitness so that you dont get tired from using your RDS001

To me the 003 sucked, the 001 mp was a real nice racquet. But the 002 tour ultralight is the best out of all of them.

Netman I hit briefly with the standard 002 found it too light for any hard work IMO. Since you have added lead to your 003 (as i recall) i think the std 002 may underwhelm you.

tlm, I have seen your posts regarding the 002 Tour UL. How would you compare the SW of the 002 UL versus SL...do yo find it less powerful due to less mass? I gather you think the UL lies somewhere between the 001 MP and the SL Tour? I like the 002 tour alot and have played mostly with the 4 3/8...but seem to want something modestly lighter.

The swingweight is less on the ul which made it less powerful.I liked the sl also but it just has to much power for me.I guess you could say the ul lies somewhere between the 001 mp + the sl 002 tour.

I used the 001 mp for almost a year + i really liked it, but i think the 002 tour ul is even better. It is more comfortable than the 001 mp, i was able to use the stiff 001, but not with polys. The 001 has better control than both of the 002's, the ul has better control than the sl.

They are all great sticks, but i love my 002 tour ul.I use a heavy topspin game+ this racquet really puts massive top on the ball.If you think it is to light you can always use some lead tape. The 002 tour sl is also a great feeling stick, it was the best for serving.I could hit even more of a heavy topspin shot with it, but it just had to much power for me.

I would suggest trying all of them, like i said before the only one i didnt like was the 003.Another problem is trying to find someone who demos the 002 ul, i was not able to demo the ul so i took a chance+purchased it+ got lucky that it was the racquet for me.So far i have only seen the sl for demo, also i wish TW would list the sl+the ul specs seperate to avoid all the confusion.

Thanks all for the feedback. The 001 MP is currently in the top slot for me as I have won a couple of tough 3 setters with it. I've tweaked it to just over 12 oz and am finding it has the best balance of power and control. Guess I'll give the 002 Tour a test drive to see how it feels in comparison.

So... A pirate walks into a bar with a large wheel hanging off the front of his pants. The bartender asks him, "Why do have a wheel hanging out of your pants? Doesn't that bother you at all?" The pirate replied, "Arrrgghh...it's driving me nuts."

I find the 003 a bit too light sometimes so if you're like me the standard 002 would probably be going in the wrong direction. How easy is the 001 MP to swing btw because it is more headlight than the 003. Does that cancel out the higher swingweight somewhat?

I'd love to try the 002 tour personally.. if I had the finances :)

001 MP swings very lightly. It is a very stiff frame and takes some time to get used to if you are coming from a more flexible frame. Great for S&V tennis.

What the heck is a RDS002 Tour "UL" and a RDS002 "SL"? I think "UL" means Ultra Light to you guys, but what about "SL"? Still, what are these racquets? I only know of a RDS002 and a RDS002 Tour.

Ultra Light (UL) is for grip sizes 1/8 and 1/4; while 3/8, and above are SL which I think means Super Light. UL is lighter than SL and is less head light.

Thanks, but where does this info come from? Yonex web sites don't mention any of this; they only refer, as I said before, to one model of RDS002 and one model of RDS002 Tour.

Check the link below, under average weight, swing weight, and balance they list both UL and SL specs. I am not sure where weight difference is between the UL and SL, it could just be in the handle. If it is then that would mean the SL just has weight added in the handle whereas the UL does not, I know I added weight to my UL, there was not any there yet.

Takes a few minutes to switch between the two since the heavier weight of the 001 MP takes a split longer to get moving. But I find the 001 MP feels quicker at the net and as basil j stated it is a superb S&V frame. Good stick on volleys and wonderful on half volleys. You can really crunch overheads as well. I find the 003 to be better from the baseline, but thats about the only place it beats my modded 001 MP and even then there really isn't that much difference.

In the end it comes down to the 001 MP having that extra .5 oz of weight to help handle hard hit balls and a thinner throat that helps temper some of the power of a big swing. Once I strung it with Topspin CyberFlash it all came together for me.

What kind of kick are you all getting with the RDSs? I was practicing serves today with the 003 and I was consistently kicking it up to about 6-7ft on the back fence. Getting some great action on it for serves.

ps thanks for answering my Q netman
