the *********s grab every stat in which Nadal is better than Federer, what else?
LOL. Some of you guys are obsessed with what we think about Federer.

Nice thread. Great work.
I have no idea if I've posted in here already, lol
Tsonga d. Fish in 5!
Done. Fish and Haase's stats need updating on the OP.
Mardy Fish's 5-set record is 7-9 (a 43.75 winning percentage)
Robin Haase's 5-set record is 2-5 (a 28.57 winning percentage)
The guy with the winning record over both Federer and Nadal...
Retired in 2010
(I hope Nadal gets to play a 5-setter in this US Open. He rarely is stretched to 5 in slams. It is always epic when he does)
Agreed... 10 years on tour playing only 18 5-setters and losing just 3 is an incredible record.
That's an average of 1.8 5-set matches per year and a loss of one 5-set match every 3 years and 4 months.
I did that and the information isn't readily available and compiled. Hence the thread, genius.
If you have nothing to contribute then move along
Youzhny is now 16-9 (a 64 winning percentage), after beating Bellucci 14-12 in the fifth set, so Bellucci needs updating.
Hewitt and Wawrinka will finish tomorrow.
Thanks Mustard

Wawrinka d. Hewitt - both need updating
I've updated Hewitt. You've got Wawrinka's score the wrong way round, Bud, as if he lost the match.
Is he not 15-9?
I mean the match score of Wawrinka vs. Hewitt on Wawrinka's list of 5-setters
He beat Tsonga in 5 at he FO this year (I missed that one).. But where is the missing match?
You've missed the very first 5-set match of Wawrinka's career from March 2005:
2005 Davis Cup 1R: Sjeng Schalken def. Stanislas Wawrinka (1-6, 6-2, 6-4, 2-6, 9-7)
Or using your use of the score (6-1, 2-6, 4-6, 6-2, 7-9)
Ferrer and Delpo need updating
I have often thought that this is an important stat and am surprised that it isn't highlighted as much as it used to be. Heads to heads may be more important, but those being roughly equal, I will take the ironman when it goes into the fifth.
Of course, some of the most entertaining five setters in tennis history were Aaron's.
Updated
surprising to see haas has actually played the 3rd most 5 setters out of all the active players with 37 total
Thanks M! BTW, great to see Nadal win another DC title with Spain!
I have mixed feelings about career 5-set matches. For those with high numbers of 5th set matches, it seem to hint that they can't get long matches done in 3 or 4 sets. On the other hand, it shows they are a fighter if they were down 0-2 and come back to win :|
Be interesting to hear Mustard's take on large numbers of career 5-set matches (Hewitt for example).
Fantastic. It's also the first time that Nadal won the rubber that clinched it
You sum it up pretty well. Guys like Hewitt and Safin have a tendency to have a lot of dramatic matches that go into fifth sets. Hewitt is well known as a fighter, who would get more tenacious even if his playing level dropped off a bit for parts of the match. Safin's reputation is a bit more mixed. Nevertheless, Safin seemed to thrive in fifth sets because if he got that far, then he's in the mood to win.
Now that Hewitt's nearing the end he's been losing a number of heartbreaking 5 setters. His tenacity is still there but he's broken down... it's sad.
^^I know but it's still sad to see not only with Hewitt but a lot of that gen will be gone soon. I just think that once the Olympics come and go 2012 will be a big retirement year.
The press reported Nastase losing the third set 0-6.1976 WCT Challenge Cup SF: Ilie Nastase def. Bjorn Borg (6-1, 3-6, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4)
The press reported Nastase losing the third set 0-6.
This Associated Press report has Borg winning the third set in a bagel and taking 11 games in a row: http://news.google.com/newspapers?i...AAAIBAJ&pg=5565,3128170&dq=borg+nastase&hl=en

I've contacted the ITF about it (they have the third set as 4-6, same as the ATP does).
Edit: here's a post for historical comparison (Von Cramm's five-set record): http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?p=6213294#post6213294
It's also listed as 0-6 in this compilation of Borg's exos (funny how the ATP and ITF now count it as an official match, not an exo): http://tt.tennis-warehouse.com/showthread.php?t=234431Hmmm. So is it 0-6? One would have to think contempary press releases are pretty reliable.
Bumped for the 2012 AO!
