The Austin-Evert rivalry

Rome? In 1979, not even the equivalent of a "Tier I" or on par with Miami, Indian Wells of today!

"Masters" finals? OK, a history lesson for you.

Tracy Austin beat Chris Evert in the RR and semis of the Colgate Series Championships in January 1980. It was actually the series ending event for the 1979 Colgate series tournaments. Austin also beat Evert in the RR of the 1979 Avon circuit.

As for the really big events, you know the four majors, the Grand Slams, here is the H2H for Evert-Austin

1977 Wimbledon 3R: Evert d. Austin 6-1,6-1
1978 US Open QF: Evert d. Austin 7-5,6-1
1979 US Open F: Austin d. Evert 6-4,6-3
1980 US Open SF: Evert d. Austin 4-6,6-1,6-1

My math says that's a 3-1 H2H advantage for Evert. In the majors. Where it counts the most.

My math also counts a whopping five, 6-1 set victories for Chris! Ouch! Tracy really got crushed when it mattered.

To be fair Austin was 14 in 1977 when she played Evert and totally inexperienced. Obviously got better in 1978 but at 15 wasn't ready yet being that it was her first professional year.

your pathetic tries to enhance Mrs Lloyd just show how bad your maths teacher was... or what a lousy student you were¡¡¡

Nobody should be playing on the pro tour at 14 years old. An abbreviated schedule is fine at 15 , but there are even risks there.

Austin in 1979 at the US Open was 16 and she won the tournament. Both are incredible players. I love the game of Chris Evert but Austin was not called Tracy Awesome for nothing. She was fantastic and should not be disrespected. When she was at her best her average level of play was incredible.

No math is very simple:

1 + 1 = 2

And 3 is greater than 1.

And yes, 24 years old is more than 17 years.

But age has ALWAYS been relevant in tennis terms. Is it, was it better to be older, or younger. There's experience with age. And added pressure. Younger players have no expectations and play uninhibited and freely.

Austin CHOSE to play on tour at age 14. Which was perfectly legit at the time. She wanted to play with the big girls. She's gotta be able to take the losses, along with the wins.

In tennis, a win is a win, a loss is a loss. It's simple. A win isn't 3/4 of a win. A loss isn't discounted by 33% because some psychopathic fan didn't like the result, or felt her charge wasn't ready, or old enough, or [fill-in-the-blank-excuse].

Now, as for my trying to enhance Chris Evert's record. It needs none. Evert won 18 majors in her career. Tracy Austin won a mere two. Never appeared in a major final other than the US Open. Never successfully defended a major title. Never did a lot of things. Chris Evert. She won just about everything. More than once. Including 7 French Opens. 7. Count 'em. Seven. (Counting is a math thing, so those that don't understand basic math please seek remedial help). How many French Open crowns did Tracy win. Quite frankly, how many matches did Tracy Austin win in her entire career at the French? Well that's right. Tracy won a grand total of 7 matches in her career at the French. And it wasn't 7 in one year, by any stretch. So while Chris Evert won 7 titles at the French, Tracy won just 7 pathetic matches. Ouch!

The Evert/Austin rivalry burnt brightly, brilliantly but briefly. Both had the minds of champions, exceptional sportsmanship, but only one of them is considered one of the greatest to play the game. That lady is not Tracy Austin.

look at their HtH¡¡

Inquiring minds wanna know.....

What's an "Hthii"

Sounds kinda like Monica Seles' grunt!

But if you want to know about a rivalry, let's look at results in majors. Or total # of wins in majors.

But if you want to keep it strictly to head-to-head records, I feel VERY safe and comfortable knowing Conchita Martinez is miles ahead of Martina Navratilova. Yup, Conchita MILES ahead of Martina!

Ah Kiki darling, don't you get it, you ain't never gonna convince nobody that Austin was nothing more than a brief pesky thorn in Evert's side, that she surgically extracted and exterminated for good! For proof, check out their last ever match. It was, I believe:

Chris Evert def. Tracy Austin 6-0, 6-0

That's right, a professional match that ended with the victor (EVERT) not relinquishing a single game, to a seriously overmatched opponent (AUSTIN)!

Austin led the HtH and it is too late to change it

********. None of this happened because of a missing autograph and a little disillusion. It happened to Navratilova and Jaeger and Shriver, and countless others because Austin was for a couple of years, the toughest on the block. Her character and nature were formed long before. Her strokes were formed by coaches and instincts were her own, and not one single point in any match with Evert was altered by that interaction. She wanted to be the best, and was willing to do the work to maximize her talent.

You overdramatize what was in essence a small matter and it cheapens Austin's commitment to her sport.

Tracy Austin was the kind of individual that capitalizes all motivational factors; her coach Bob Landsdorp is one of the greatest, yet most underrated coaches the game has known and is such a psichologist¡¡¡.Total opposite to Bolletieri as seen by the results achieved with two completely opposite players like Austin and Sampras.

You left aside Hana Mandlikova. She hated losing to Austin, yet she almost always did. That is why beating her at the French was such a relief for her

Great champion minds and personalities like Austin's don't capitalize on motivational factors. They manufacture and fuel them on an 'as needed' basis. There is one for every occasion, and they wear it on court as surely as they wear their tennis shoes. They like to win and hate to lose, and that is the pivotal motivator for their conduct.

The more one traces back deeply to the 70 and 80, the more convinced I am that Austin was the real hard nosed, weird rivalry in Evert´s career. The story of two complementry, polar opposite players and personalities that match perfectly like Evert vs Navratilova turned out into magical mutual enhancement. No hate or animosity between them.No animosity against Goolagong, because of Evonne´s nature and limited ( in regards to her vast talent) ambitions.Court was another generation.King , had she been born 10 yrs later would have been a combination of both, Austin mutual disliking and Navratilova opposite style and probably would have turned out being her main career opponent.Seles and Graf too young for Evert.Mandlikova, another specimen.

So, yeah, the real rivalry was Austin vs Evert

The problem is this 'real' story is fueled mostly by your imagination. You like a soap opera plot more than a tennis match. The fact that they disliked each other adds more fuel to your sense of the dramatic, than it did to the rivalry itself. This was basically two years and no more than four or five important matches. You lose your sense of proportion in these matters.

I edited the scores.Austin blasted her in a way nobody else did.

Your biass towards Evertilovism is every day more and more potent. You are a poster with good insight for the game, but you lack perspective to get further.

No one asked you to edit anything. I already posted the entire head to head with dates, scores and venues in post #31 because you had been cherry picking. It sure is not hard to find some embarrassing Evert losses to Austin, to Navratilova or to Jaeger or to others. They all look real devastating . Do want me to post a thread on Evert's worst losses? Psychobabble about an missing autograph opportunity is not perspective. Austin was explaining why Evert was not her roll model, not explaining an entire rivalry ( two years and maybe 5 important matches) in terms of animosity.

Tracy Austin´s career was turned off by dampening injuries. She, unfortunately IMO, couldn´t reach her best.
