How could is Lopez's slice?

I know Lopez's backhand gets alot of criticsm because he almost always only slices it, but he does have a very good slice I find. One of the best in the game today.

Indeed his slice is really notable otherwise he couldn't use it as often as he does with that kind of results. If I recall correctly a few years ago he was developing the top spin on his backhand during clay season but for some reason he abandoned that.

I wonder why he abandoned it. With a decent topspin backhand he could be a real contender.

Beats me.Imagine If he would had continued, surely he would has fully taylored the top spin to his backhand by now.

He does have good topspin shots on the backhand side. He doesnt slice because hes inept. He slices because the slice is great for building points for a net attacker. Net attackers typically reserve their topspin shots for passing shots or to mix it up.

Yeah, he has a topspin backhand. He hits it on occasion, it ends up being like once per game or something like that. It's actually gotten quite good, it's not like Karlovic's or something.

It's just not as consistent as his slice, and his slice is *really good*. So he only uses it when there's a good reason. For most of the players, it's the other way around - they hit topspin unless there's a good reason to go to the slice. Lopez it's the other way around, he hits slice unless there's a good reason to hit topspin in that point. But he can hit both.

Lopez produced some great topspin backhands in his match against Fed in the 2007 USO. Lately, he seems to almost exclusively rely on the slice. Yes, his slice has to be very good for him to be able to depend so heavily on it. Would say that rather his forehand is not quite a monster shot even if it is very good and that leaves him unable to attack from the baseline on both wings. Of course his intent is always to use the slice to come in, but that ploy doesn't always work well in today's tennis.

Lopez has a nice backhand, for 1977. But it's not 1977 so watch at 6 minutes and 16 seconds in when Stan figurately eats the Lopez slice backhand and spits it out for a winner:

Stan eats lots of things and hits them for winners, slice or topspin. I don't think a single point really proves much either way.

I wonder if there are any stats that can show the point a little better? Like, percentage of points won when he has to hit a backhand, or something. Because I watched Lopez beat Kyrgios in a semifinal a day ago, and his slice backhand looked like it was giving Kyrgios a lot of trouble, and Lopez ripped a few winners with it as well. But that was just one match.

You want to read stats or watch the BH ? A quarter million plus so far went for the BH. I'd be delighted if we were a more statistics interested/literate society but I think you're barking up the wrong tree.

However, your point is solid. I was being flippant. The point (indeed entire video) proves nothing. (It's nice to watch Stan rip his BH though.)

I've seen quite a bit of Lopez and I don't rate his BH very highly -- he can't pass with it under pressure among other problems. The slice is OK. It gets him to the net. If he's feeling loose he can hit a BH winner. So can most of the tour. He can't do it often and he can't consistently pass with it enough when it counts. Of course, like you infer this is all anecdotal and I can't back it with any stats. So it's just another story.

He is playing well lately though. And I do like his game which adds a much needed to me variety to the Tour.
