    http://www.guardian.co.uk/sport/2012/dec/04/rafael-nadal-australian-open-return

Quite rightly playing down his AO chances. In fact, he still seems to be implying that it's not 100% certain that he'll play it. Looking to be 100% fit by Monte Carlo.

Rafael Nadal has targeted a return to full fitness by April after dismissing his chances of making a winning comeback to grand slam tennis at the Australian Open.

The world No4 has not played competitively since his shock defeat to Lukas Rosol in the second round of Wimbledon in June due to a partial tear of the patella tendon in his left knee, but has recently returned to the practice court.

He intends to compete at the Mubadala Tennis Championship in Abu Dhabi later this month and then play at the season's first major in Melbourne in January.

The 11-time grand slam winner does not believe he will be a realistic title contender for the first few months of the season, but is hoping to be back to his best for the Monte Carlo Masters which gets under way on April 14.

"I want to be 100% in Monte Carlo and then prepare well for Roland Garros," Nadal said. "I will hopefully be ready for Australia but I am only looking at tomorrow and continuing my recovery.

"I have the goal of returning in Abu Dhabi but neither Abu Dhabi nor Australia are the end of the world for me. I will only come back when I am fit. I won't come back worrying about my knee.

"Miracles do not exist and I am unlikely to return and compete for the Australian Open. The results will not worry me in the first tournaments back.

"My recovery is going well. This past month I have taken an important step. I feel happy and the doctors are too.

"We are in the last stage of the recovery and I want to recover as soon as possible but I will not rush back and then have to stop again in six months or a year's time."

I hope he comes back strongly. He's my back-up after all and I need him to win RG. I also really miss him. :(

Thanks for keeping us updated batz.

There you go. I thought it was too good to be true for Nadal playing in Abu Dhabi and AO without any whining about his injuries. Give it another week and he'll put all from all these tournaments.

I took it to mean that he is now practising on a court again - that would have to be the last stage of his recovery before playing competitively again.

what do mean, what exactly does this mean ??

it means he dos'nt want to cut short his rehab and risk breaking down just to play in the australian open..so if it means missing tourneys in the new year to complete his recovery, then thats what he is going to do.

That's correct. Nadal is undefeated when he wins.

All he's doing is taking pressure off himself by reducing expectation. He's coming out to Australia to try and win the tournament but has given himself an excuse if he gets knocked out early.

Indeed. Classic Nadal. Same thing as him calling Federer the favorite before every clay court match.

The only reason nadal is number 4 in the world is because of his clay court imo lol even ferrer won more hc titles than nadal

Nadal won a SLAM and 2 MASTERS titles this year. He outperformed Ferrer all year up until he got injured.

We could also say the only reason Ferrer is anywhere near the top 4 is because Nadal got injured.

I thought he/she/it was only tipping Rafa to win a mere 3 slams this year - thereby matching Pete.

He doesn't sound very confident about playing either Abu Dhabi or the AO. It wouldn't surprise me if he ends up skipping both and we don't see him again at least until the clay season gets underway.

i think the message is lost in translation i think what is meant to say is he doesnt think he'll be a contender to win the ao, not that he wont play it

I think it's a case of lost in translation. Did a search and other sources write:
"I would like to return in January," said Nadal. "I don't expect to return and win the Australian Open, I have to be realistic. "

I think there is a hidden message in all of this. Toni wants the entire tour to be rid of HC. Nadal will not play until clay season (i.e. 'boycott') in order to realize Toni's perverse dreams.

I think he knows what he's doing.

He has never said he will for sure play in Abu Dhabi and the AO, despite what the organizers have said. He will play if fit and he think he probably will be by then.

I see where you got confused. But I'm sure he means he won't come back if not fully healed now so that he doesn't have to take another long break in 6 months or a year.

    Get over it.

Sure he's taking pressure of himself by not putting too high expectations on himself. He doesn't need that now.

Yeah, I wonder what the ranking of the other top three players' would look like if most of the season was on clay AND they missed half of it.

Wow, this is really disappointing. I'm starting to really think his knee situation is a lot worse than anybody outside his immediate camp knows. Damn. Really, really, disappointed to hear the way he sounds. A part of me has been thinking all along that the sixth months off was part knee rest, part psychological sabbatical after Djokovic death matches, and part "stick it to the man" hatred for hard courts. After reading this, I wonder if Nadal is just going to be basically a clay court part-time player for the last "five" years of his career.

That'd be kind of funny in a way--ranked outside of the top 200; show up in RG each year, win it. Go home.

Jeebus, all this "may or may not" play the AO from Rafa is starting to get old. Just pull out, seriously, your fans would understand.

I wouldn't worry too much just yet Winston. He knows his priorities for the season. He actually said something similar last year before the AO.

I have been thinking that since the beginning. I think they know things are bad but are hoping on hope that he can come back. I'm not sure if he will ever play another professional match on the ATP tour again, and by the sound of things, neither are he and his team.

He won't have enough match play under his belt in time for the AO after missing all that time.. If he makes a QF or SF there at least that will be a great result. He probably won't be back in "match shape" until clay season

eh? You were going on about how Nadal would drop out of the top 4 by the end of the year, and that was before he got injured, now someone else says crap about Nadal and you start seeing sense. Hilarious.

Well, he missed half the season so it's logical to think his ranking is going to drop. He is still at risk of falling to number 5 or even lower, especially if he skips the AO completely.

I just didn't like the glee in which that poster made their comment. Nadal is my favorite player, even though I can be harsh on him. It's like telling your family member or friend they're an idiot but then getting mad when some outsider says it. You know what I mean?

yeah to be fair I do know what you mean, I just wish you would cut Nadal some slack sometimes and be a bit more realistic with the criticism ;) We all know he is solid top 4 unless hugely injured and even playing half the year he was top 4. So thinking he was going to fall out of the top 4 or 5 just because of bad play was a bit much.

He is at risk of dropping lower now, but as we agree, only because he has lost so much time and needs more time to get match sharp.

Take it from a law graduate (who feels she's forgotten much of what she studied, so take it with a grain of salt if you want, but nevertheless).

But really, just how could any of those deals force him to play?, they just couldn't. At most there could be some clause that would make him return some money if he would retire, but I don't know if such clauses are used in these contracts and in any case I certainly would expect Rafa to have enough leverage to not have any such clause in his contracts.
