The toughest draw of all time: Nadal at Wimbledon 2022

Third Serve

Talk Tennis Guru
Nadal already had little chance to win Wimbledon before the draw (last time he played he was close to winning by reaching the semifinals), but with this draw he has literally no chance. Nor would Federer or Djokovic win with this draw. No one can. This is the thoughest draw of all time.

Here is Nadal's draw:

1R: Cerundolo

2R: Querrey (big serve, defeated Djokovic at Wimbledon in the past)

3R: Sonego

4R: Cilic (Wimbledon finalist, has been close to defeating both Federer and Djokovic at Wimbledon in the past).

QF: FAA (pushed Nadal to five sets at RG, defeated Zverev last year at Wimbledon)

SF: Berrettini (Wimbledon finalist, defeated Federer’s conquerer Hurkacz)

F: Djokovic

This is the most brutal draw the history of tennis has ever seen. Not even the US Open 1992 comes close to this. Edberg “only” had to defeat Sampras, Chang, Lendl, and Krajicek. All of those are “weak” players compared to Djokovic, and Nadal also has other mighty grass court specialists in his road to the final.

It's looking 90% to be Djokovic v Nadal in the final....lets not kid ourselves here.

I kept hearing how grass field is the weakest it has ever been, Djokovic is sleeping walking to the title before the draw even came out, but I see the usual complaining about how the draws panned out. 8-B

Djokovic and Nadal are the superior grass court players, and yes, Nadal is still ahead of everyone bar Djokovic, even if he has not played a competitive match on grass in three years. Doesn't matter what the draws would have been, these two are the best.

Edberg definitely had it thougher because he failed to realize that he didn't have to run inside the service box every point after a serve

imagine playing against those players AND not realizing you can use the backcourt. Crazy stuff.

That's a bery touff draw, no?

But there's a much harder one:
1R-4R Unseeded scrubs or something
QF - 12 year old Rublev
SF - Delpo on crutches
F - Kevin Anderson

blame Federer and his "Neo-backhand" for losing to Delpo on crutches

Dude gets 1 really bad draw and all of a sudden we're on him as if every slam he's won was as a result of weak competition, as if the other 2 haven't had their share of easy draws.

Come on... it's obviously not that tough, but still there's a few threats...

Let's see how it plays out... draws almost never go according to script anyway

Do you remember this path to the final?
Youzhny (walkover)
Vesely (walkover)
Edmund
Tsonga (walkover)
Monfils
Wawrinka

Edmund > Dolgopolov
Tsonga > Rublev
Monfils < Delpo
Wawrinka >>>> Anderson

Truth is, no matter how deep you dig, you won't find a easier run to the slam title than USO 2017, where an exhausted Delpo was the only semi-redeemable opponent.

YOU CANNOT BE SERIOUS- LOL!!

That would be hilarious if djoker loses in the semis after such a weak draw And Nadal wins it

I don’t know about toughest draw ever but being stuck with FAA and Berritini to get to the final is tough as hell on grass Of course upsets do happen. The draw could fall apart. outside of Djoker, FAA and Berritini are the two toughest guys on the tournament

Any draw where a player had to face Federer or Djokovic before the final was harder than this draw.

Such a draw was a virtual concrete tomb saying “you shall not pass”.

And they almost never did. Especially if Fedovic was healthy.

Cilic? FAA? Berrettini compared to a healthy Federer even of 2019 (and certainly prior) is not “tough”.

Nadal - if he is The Nadal - should be able to take all these guys.

And I hope he does!

Not even close. Ivanisevic 2001: Moya, Roddick, Rusedski, Safin, Henman, Rafter

I'm with the OP. But he isn't giving the competition nearly enough credit.

Cerundolo, due to evolution, is far greater than McEnroe ever was. So right out of the gate, he's facing a player 10 times better than 1984 McEnroe
Querrey: beat a good version Djokovic. And the scary part is that Querrey has evolved. Due to evolution, Querrey>peak Sampras
Sonego: he's 1-1 vs Thiem. Thiem is 5-2 vs peak Federer. Ergo, Sonego>>>>>>>>> peak Federer. This math was incredibly easy.
Cilic: This guy is very tall and very evolved. He'd win 10 straight Wimbledons from 2000-2009.
FAA: FAA slaughtered peak Federer at Halle last year; an event that Federer has won 10 times. FAA>>>>>>>>>>>Federer
Berretini: his 250 mph serves cannot be seen by most players, unless they are wearing special eyewear, which isn't legal yet.
Djokovic: He's impossible to beat. Ergo, by default, Djokovic alone makes this draw impossible.

1R: Cerundolo. Has never won a tournament

2R: Querrey. Has not won a tournament in 5 years

3R: Sonego. 2 times ATP250s winner

4R: Cilic (a test, 7-2 Rafa H2H)

QF: FAA (probably won't be him but Fritz or Evans)

SF: Berrettini (a player with no backhand, Nadal's favourite prey)

F: Djokovic (here ends the CYGS fairytale for Rafa)

Bonus: Rafa won't be making any excuses, as announced by The Philosopher :)

His draw at Wimbledon 2018 was tougher. Del Potro, Djokovic, Federer in his path to winning the trophy. Obviously Federer didn't make the final but on paper, that was a tough as hell draw.
