After the fiasco of qualifying, a good race. Good competition at the front and in the middle of the pack.

I know you Euros won't go for it - but a NASCAR time trial qualifying is simple and effective - on track without traffic; 3 laps; rank by best time. F1 could take that for Q1 and have a Q2 similar to Q3 from last year and have the top 8 or 10 cars.

Looks like Haas made a good choice in buying Ferrari engines. They are competitive.

^^^ 'High tech'? You mean all the cars that just sat in their garage and accepted their spot? That was real 'edge of your seat' TV.

The new method might have worked if hot laps counted. But 90 seconds when a lap takes almost that long - what were they thinking?

I don't know why other countries even bother with motorsports.
The USA obviously has this category locked up too.

it's not about whether we the Euro fans want it. The decision to a large degree hinges on what Bernie Ecclestone thinks will be exciting for the fans. I hear for the next race qualifying will revert to the format from the previous season.

As I understand it the new format was put in place to try and introduce some randomness into qualifying in an attempt make the grid order less predictable. It failed.

I'm being sarcastic lol - having a go at their "USA is #1" attitude, which is probably least true in motorsport, as you say. :D

So if I'd said MotoGP (which a buddy emailed to remind me that's there qualifying method too) it would all be good?

I give F1 credit for trying something new (like the ATP and the round robins, remember them?) - but this backfired big time.

Congrats. I heard the Metro goes the whole way now. I go to too many ATP events - but F1 is on the bucket list - thinking about Singapore. Won't be cheap.

F1 is about building up to several moments, when all this work, circumstances, high tech and pilots' characters develop into a mix to produce pure emotion undiluted by Miller Light and Popcorn.

NASCAR is about people's minds getting numb from following the oval but not enough to forget that they have to buy more popcorn and "beer".

I think this season is way much better than the last three. This new rule of three compounds per race made the whole thing a lot more exciting to watch (except today in Barcelona and in Russia), but I can't stand this hybrid technology. Expensive engines, the worst noise this sport has ever had, confusing rules... it stinks. I just wanted the things to way they were in 2004 and 2005, but without the cigarette money that seems impossible.

Anyway, this season is in Rosberg's hands. Hamilton is clearly out of focus.

What I mean is that it's not gentlemanly "you first" "no, YOU first" stuff that's aided by KERS and DRS.
It's high contact, no-holds-barred racing. Everyone gives 100% every lap.
Whereas what bugs me about F1 is the conservative driving in which drivers seem almost afraid to pass without DRS.

I just watched a bit of the Australian GP V8 supercars for the first time in my life.

It is basically bland getting in and out of line without any buildup to anything. No lap times, no differences.

Only chaos.

And the safety car was much nicer than the racing cars.

I actually find F1 enjoyable only on replay. First off I'm in the US, so just like tennis I don't have to worry about friends or the media spoiling the results...besides me no one gives a sh#t.

Then I can watch the pre-race pits (Brit commentators are hilarious, and the Paddock girls are HOT), then the start and approx. first 5 laps till it settles into a boring parade...then forward to pit stops...and finish up with the last 5 laps, which 98% of the time it is decided by then. About 30-45 minutes of viewing, efficiently "enhanced" by a German Ale or a couple glasses of Red Wine, and some "flammable" fun.;)

There are also litlle details like this:

1) you could follow the progress of the tactic of the teams (especially with the radio from the paddock included) and how those influence the lap times and pits
2) once the race gets going you can see how the timess of the drivers reflect their skils especially when targets are set "on the move" from the paddock. Following the changing lap times is actually pretty intense
3) The direct response from the rivals (following the lap times)

You also get to see the development of the cars throughout the season and how it influences the battles for positions.

Also the nature of the different tracks that adds to the diversification and forces changes in the tactics (Monaco GP for example)

All this and more is what makes F1 F1 (besides the pinnacle of motorsport technology, obviously).

Stats are nice, but they don't make the race interesting by themselves.

I think the chaos is wonderful. We don't get enough of that from F1.

Also, I love the look of the cars. Don't hate on those Volvos, they're stunning.

Are you an engineer or computer programmer? If so I could see the enjoyment factor in what you purpose, however I prefer my sports a little more raw and a lot less quantative and statistical.

to each their own...and I like F1..but forme, with most motor sports I don't need to watch the whole thing. It's like five setters in tennis...I watch first 2 sets, and if they split I take a hike until the 4th....sense of urgency is what makes the drama for me.

Agree. I find the F1 races hard to watch end to end also. The starts are great; but after that many races turn into processionals - very little racing, just guys managing tires to the line. And 3 guys yakking a lot.

And to your comparison with tennis: as much as I like both, the participants in both many times come across as spoiled rich brats when things don't go their way. Lost a lot of respect for Alonso, who I used to love - too much complaining. But he's an amateur compared to Vettel, Rosberg, and Hamilton.

Rosberg and Hamilton deserve each other. Probably more blame for Rosberg but plenty on Hamilton for yesterday's fiasco too. It was the 1st lap, not 66.

Well I am happy that you are so much different that you don't fit the cliché, but from my distant memories the said products (or at least the quality equivalent of them) was quite prevalent at such sporting events.

Maybe the things have changed so much that now the prevalent beverages at NASCAR events are IPA beers and the prevalent food is shrimp cocktails ..... but I doubt it.

From my trip to Shanghai 2016. It was absolutely amazing. These things were ridiculously fast - passing me over 300 kmph. A bit overwhelming for a first-timer to photograph especially when you have to keep the shutter speed low to capture the motion. Shooting angle is a bit limiting from photography standpoint. Maybe I should buy the 500-dollar VIP ticket next time lol.

Yeah, the Metro has a stop at the circuit; very convenient. Go for it. I go to Shanghai a lot but always missed the F1. This time I made to sure to reserve a weekend there on my calendar. It was worth everything.

It used to be a LONG bus ride from what I'm told (of course the tennis was too - now the Metro gets you most of the way, then a 10 min taxi ride).

Perfect weather in Oct for the Masters 1000.

I am not watching F1 any more (barely following the results and some sponsors' movements), so if you are referring to very recent rules I cannot be of much help to you.

However, neither F1 nor NASCAR are recent phenomena, so, I can confidently say that throughout the history of the sport there have been many changes and none of them hurt F1's global popularity.

You may not like it or find it less interesting.

Thanks. I wish the Masters 1000 in October worked for my schedule. I'd love to spend a whole week there enjoying tennis. Shanghai used to only have the Heineken Open when I grew up, which I unfortunately hadn't been to either.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Monaco GP earlier... Great win for Hamilton. Although it was a bit spoiled for me when, after exiting the car to greet his crew, the camera panned around and Justin Bieber was there. Rentboys like him don't deserve to get VIP treatment in a sport like F1. :p

Was odd that Hamilton didn't receive a talking to for his extreme defense against Ricciardo. Hamilton literally went off the track and then squeezed the door shut in a pretty dangerous manner. If this was Rosberg, we'd never hear the end of it.

Hamilton is clearly favored by the FIA ever since he stepped in F1. He obviously cut the corner there and it saved his position. If other driver did that, they surely would order him to give the position back...

I hope Rosberg doesn't bottle it like he did two years ago.
I've followed f1 for about 10 years and the current v6 era is the weak era in F1. I never liked Hamilton or Rosberg, always thought both seem very conceited and are both overrated. Put Ricciardo or Alonso or Grosjean in that Mercedes and they'd destroy the current merc drivers.
