What should have people born a 100 years back and earlier be thinking of themselves as.
And what about people several hundred years in the future when all this is elementary and they have (possibly) gone way beyond this.

You want us to think of ourselves as per the latest books, eh ? As they change, we should keep changing our perception of ourselves ?

Or in Shakespearean times, or the ancient Greeks ?

I think it'd be exactly the same way we think about ourselves right now - give or take.

Of course. I have changed a lot over the years, from a brain-washed product of a conservative family to an original thinker. What people thought of themselves 100 years ago is not my problem, nor what I would have thought if I had lived 100 years ago. I was born-again (dwija in Sanskrit) when I studied evolution as an adult. Everything prior to that was lies, told out of ignorance or malice.

When I was growing up, ethnic, misogynist and gay jokes were commonplace, and only mainstream people were perceived as normal. Today, I find mainstream people to be abnormal and hateful.

i imagine a poor fellow, depressed and lost, who sees this thread and thinks:

... only to find out he's just a colony of unicellular vermin that deserves to be wiped out from the surface of the earth :(

I guess i am a disappointment because i simply believe life is absurd because it IS and there are several several examples that prove it to me. And yet i still havent found purpose outside of calculated hedonism which seems a bit absurd too. Outside of a stubborn defiance for defiance sake i dont see any purpose to this.... Once one realizes that death is actually death and doesnt delude oneself with some afterlife fantasy which is absurd in and of itself purpose is fleeting...

This is how I deal with this absurd rock. I have convinced myself I am an observer that is suppose to take notes ... because somebody will ask me for this information at a later date. For example, our current election and the apparent end of our democracy should horrify me ... but as an observer it is frickin fascinating, and I have so much to record.

We have more tennis balls to hit ... and I have more Game of Thrones to watch. Also ... there is always a chance someone will create something as good as Breaking Bad (nah ... that is not going to happen). Also ... I buy lottery tickets every week, and I have my 81 year old mother check the numbers with me every Sunday on our breakfast date. Man ... that 81 year old is a handful of purpose.

Make others laugh every now and then ... pretty good purpose. Your 86lbs of Kevlar continues to work for me.

Got to go ... think there was another unshackled Trump event I have to record.

Purpose is a human concept.

Before you ask what is your purpose, ask what was is the purpose of piece of rock or a bacterium. Do you know why there are there? If you don't, why do you think you will know what your purpose is?

You cannot have any more purpose than the sum of the purposes of all the inanimate matter and animate matter (which were free living organisms once) inside you. People have tried to come up with a sum is greater than the parts theory by adding a soul to the mix, but there is no evidence of that.

Nice post. Very very funny... If that was your purpose great job. Re the kevlar i strung up my POG mid at 86/86 with kev poly. Now there is a purpose...string the crap out of any racquet you get

The purpose of the bacterium is to create Suresian Burito Gas. (SBG) which has destroyed worlds. Rocks are what powers most peoples heads.

The soul is a stupid concept. Our knowledge is from experience and an amorphous Helen Keller is laughable

That is an evolutionary survival technique, like religion once was. Human brain is complex enough for asking what the purpose is, but not complex enough to find the answer. To work around this problem, the concept of purpose came to be, with religions reinforcing the belief that everyone has a purpose, and that purpose is somehow to get rewarded or at least not get punished in an afterlife. It became obvious that this life by itself seems to have no purpose, as good people undergo suffering and bad people thrive and generally there is no correlation with whatever. So an afterlife (and also a prior life in some religions) became needed to pacify humans.

^^^ That is true but it was written in different times. Both oppressed and oppressor, as well as ordinary folks, like religion. It is not just a tool of exploitation as Marx thought. It is a fundamental evolutionary development for survival of humans and is wired into our brains.

If you read my post in another thread, I have a real problem with Trump tainting the color orange for me. I'm an OSU Cowboy ... and orange is a sacred color. I think I have developed a workaround this morning. They were showing the Trump Tower on the news ... and there was so much gold. Then it hit me ... Trump's orange color was just a failed attempt at turning himself into gold. I can work with that ... OSU tshirts and Halloween pumpkins are now ok again ... you might say they were made great again.
