I'll be rooting for Hewitt. Home town hero.
If not Hewitt, I'm going for Gasquet. Hopefully they'll be on opposite sides of the draw.

this RR idea really sucks... let's see what it gives, but it looks already like a big mess !

(qualificaton draw + direct elimination draw)
http://www.atptennis.com/1/posting/2007/339/MDS.pdf
(following part)

so a guy coming from the qualies until the title would play successively (in the hybrid RR format used in adelaide) :
  • direct elimination qualification draw (2 matches)
  • main draw elimination round (1 match)
  • round robin competition (2 matches)
  • final direct elimination draw (3 matches)

please tell me... how could you do more simple than this ?!

draw links updated & poll added !
(see post #1)

now you need to juggle between the 2 draw sheets for making your predictions...
but possible (and interesting) SF could be :
  • j.johansson vs djokovic
  • gasquet vs hewitt

Can one win the tournament by loosing a match?... kind of like at the masters, when you can loose a match, but still have chance to get to the semis and final.

yes you can lose a match in the RR stage, and still qualify in the QF of the final direct elimination draw.
it can happen if each of the 3 players of your RR wins 1 match, and if you have a better % of sets/games.
(see below, in bold)
Round Robin: Determining Group Winners

Exclusively for the hard-core tennis fan, here is an explanation of how a player is declared the winner of his round-robin group.

· Each player will play every other player in his group.

· All matches will be the best of three (3) tie-break sets.

· The 8 group winners advance to the final rounds.

The final standing of each group shall be determined by the first of the following methods that apply:
- Greatest number of wins;
- Greatest number of matches completed (a retirement does not count as a completed match for the retiring player; it does however, count as a completed match for the opponent of the retiring player).
- Head-to-head results if only two (2) players are tied, or if three (3) players are tied, then:
· If three (3) players each have one (1) win, a player having played less than two (2) matches is automatically eliminated and the player advancing to the final rounds is the winner of the match of the two (2) players tied with 1-1 records; or
· Highest percentage of sets won; or
· Highest percentage of games won.

· If any of the above produces one (1) superior player, then this is the winner of the group; or, if it produces one (1) inferior player, and the two remaining players are tied, the tie between those two (2) players shall be broken by head-to-head record.
- If ties still exist after the above procedures, then the player with the highest ranking shall be deemed the winner of the group.
- In applying the tie-breaking procedures, a conduct default or retirement shall count as a straight set win or loss. However, games won or lost in matches with the defaulting or retiring player shall not be counted in calculating percentage of games won.

- A player who retires during the Round Robin because of illness or injury may continue in the competition if cleared to play by the Tournament Doctor.

- Any player who is defaulted pursuant to the ATP Code during the Round Robin competition shall be defaulted from all other matches in the event and the ATP default provisions shall apply, except for the following circumstances:
· The loss of physical condition; or
· Dress and equipment.

- Any player who withdraws from any Round Robin match after the first round shall not be eligible for the final rounds.

- Any player who withdraws, or is withdrawn, after only one (1) Round Robin match may be replaced by an alternate player and that player may be eligible for the final rounds.

- Alternates for the Main Draw Elimination Round shall be the Lucky-Losers from the qualifying event.

- Alternates for the Round Robin competition shall be the Lucky-Losers from the Main Draw Elimination Round.

- There is no substitution in the final rounds.

pim-pim (j. johansson) also won his main draw elimination round and joined simon & serra in group 4 of the RR stage.

one thing i really don't understand is why they bother to put different numbers for the main draw elimination round, and the RR stage...
i mean, for instance :
here johansson = ME(6) plays in group 4.
it would have been more clear if ME(k) played in group k, wouldn't it ?!

by the way, he is blogging this week :

something i didn't find on the ATP site is the number of ATP points awarded at the different stages of this "hybrid-format"... does anybody have it ? :?

Hrbaty and Luczak are playing a first-set tiebreak, Hrbaty leads 1-0. Del Potro leads Soeda 6-3, 1-0; Moodie serves for the first set at 5-4 against Kunitsyn.

i found that :
RRpoints.JPG

from : http://www.atptennis.com/en/players/ATP_Rulebook2007.pdf

but that's not very clear :
  • in this table, it doesn't appear that you win more points if you win the tournament being undefeated (it would be logical, like at the masters)
or maybe you add the points earned in the RR stage to your 35 points for the final win ?... but i don't think it works like this, that wouldn't be coherent with the points earned in 2006.
the RR column probably gives the points you get if you win only one RR match, i think. but the least we can say is that they could have been more explicit ! :p
  • they could have added a line for the 24 draw case !
ummm... your opinion, you tennis fans ? ;)

I hate this round-robin crap already. Hrbaty lost, he should be out, but he's still in. There is something about that that just bugs the hell out of me. Tennis was so easy to follow before. Now I've got all these groups and crap and I've got to spend time staring at the bracket to find out who's in and tie-break scenarios and what not. It's cool when they do this at the year-end-tourney with the 8 best players. It's just not as interesting with these lower tier events. However, being a progressive dude I'll give it the old college try.

j. johansson lost to serra in the RR stage (26 63 64)... and already hopes to take advantage of the new system ! ;)
I played well for the first set and a half, then had chances for the break but lost my momentum. But afterwards it means that I am very keen to win my second round robin match here for 20 points. Obviously if I beat Gilles Simon two sets to love, then he might not have a chance to qualify. We’ll then see how friendly the two Frenchman are!

thanks to the 32-hybrid format, pim-pim is now a big supporter of simon !!!
(simon is already out of the tournament...)
I won my match 6-4, 7-5 against Gilles Simon. So tomorrow me and my coach/bodyguard Johan will watch the match between Simon and Florent Serra to make sure that Simon will do his best to beat his doubles partner and friend, even though he has no chance to reach the quarterfinal. For me it’s enough if Simon wins the match to get to quarterfinals on Friday, and have a shot at the title.

I hope you are all cheering for Gilles tomorrow, these 10 extra points mean a lot to me! And the best part is that I can earn them not risking another injury…!

Oh, no! Poor Del Potro won the first set against Mathieu 7-6(3), only to be broken three times in the second set. Mathieu serves for the second set, 5-0.
