Three words: six weeks rest. Best, BHBH [emoji462][emoji471][emoji462]

Ha BHBH. Yep you're prob right. Reminds me of when my sone hurt his thumb his senior year of high school before football, basketball and then baseball seasons. Had it X-ray'd and and doc said rest for 2 weeks and you should be good to go. My son's response was but then I won't be able to play/start! He didn't rest it and it kept hurting all year. He'd come to me and say "it still hurts" to which I'd say your need to take time off and he'd repeat his I won't be able to play comment. After baseball in the summer prior to going to college he "rested" it and guess what - no more pain. So my answer is but "I won't play"! Deep down absolutely correct advice. Not playing this morning is my first step.

A little rod fits into a slot with knee replacement that does away with the need for PCLs and ACLs. And, you get a nice "metal on really hard plastic" instead of "bone on bone". Highly recommended. :)

Oooh. I may be there eventually but I hope not now.

If there is one thing I'd change in my tennis life it would be to have been sufficiently wise 7 years ago to take some time off after injuring my right hip in a freak accident. I didn't and there ensued a series of lower body maladies over the next 12-18 months from which I am still trying to recover!!!

I lose the ball often in dusk, sunset skies, and if courts are really dark I have to close my eyes for about 10 minutes before a match to try to adjust (fer realz).

Severe presbyopia hit me in my early 40s, 20 yrs ago. I swore off playing in the evening leagues here a few years ago because of the combo of my crappy eyes and our crappy lights. Indoors is OK but I prefer daylight play. I compounded my problem with transition glasses, glare requires I wear a hat and if I look into the lights I am playing braille tennis. It got so bad I broke out my wife's little used 115" Head i. X 11 to try after I agreed to sub in night league for an old friend. I strung it with Ash Kev x syn gut and I can hit with it pretty well without launching it to the moon with those strings. Right at dusk really kills me. Hopefully I can bat some balls back with this big head racket that I would otherwise whiff at. My normal racket is a 100" 16x18 Prince at around 11.4oz. This 8.6oz big head racket is really kind of fun and the subject of some jokes. Ah well, the vagaries of aging.

Played some doubles today with someone defintely north of 50! My doubles partner was a women in her mid/late 70s. I think she was 76.
She played with a one hand backhand (sort of a flat slice), played the net and hit volleys when I was serving.

She played pretty smart doubles, hitting mostly crosscourt, hitting high lobs if she couldn't get in position to hit a groundstroke.

Her movement and court positioning was pretty good considering her age. Vulnerable to dropshots, so I tried to cover them for her.

I think she used a big open string pattern racquet with fully poly strung at a low tension. She complained of a little shoulder pain so suggested to her that she might consider using a softer string like synthetic gut or multi. They stringing shop she uses only carries poly, so I'm just going to give her some of the synthetic gut from my ree.

If you are sure she was 76, then why all the vagueness in defining her age? How do you know she was not 75 or 77?
It was my first time playing with her and I can't remember if she said she was 76 about to be 77 or had already turned 77.

Her forehand was surprisingly good even thought she did not use a straight-am forehand utilizing a flip and lag and neutral stance.

I am enjoying the following: ear infection in my left ear, horrible tooth pain in upper right molar, gently pulled right calf muscle. Put on antibiotics today, root canal this Friday, wearing a calf sleeve. Dang, getting old sucks!!!!

DLR!!!!!!!!!! In 2004 we were on a family vacation in Southern California. We were at an Italian restaurant in Venice Beach, Trattorias???? DLR walked in, by himself and sat in a back table. After a while my daughter and I walked over as it was on the way to the restrooms.

I didn't want to be an annoying fan so I just smiled, kind of nodded and said "were big fans" and went into the restroom. When we came out and started to walk to our table he waved us over. We talked. He asked us so many questions...what's your names, where are you from, are you having a good time out here, what attractions have you been to, what do I do for a living. He was so down to earth, really wanted to know about us. Then before he left he came to our table and talked with our whole family. Said he called a friend and had 4 tickets for us to Universal Studios at the will call! He actually seemed kind of lonely. So, 30 minutes later we finished and I asked for the bill and was informed that Mr. Roth took care of it. Fan for life!

I played today. Singles. Because I hate doubles.
Won first set 7,5. At 3,3 in second set my left calf twinged and cramped slightly..... I stopped. Because last time this happened to my right calf I was unable to walk from the tear (because I didn't stop playin) for 2 weeks. And was in a calf sleeve for 3 months.. barely able to play.

So I stopped play to fight another day.

Wow, same thing happened to me two weeks ago. Wore the sleeve for a few weeks and now it's fine. I need a sleeve for my entire body I think!

Try using this full body suit. No compression, but can keep the muscles warm.

Well, they don't feature all his braces in this video, but he *must* be who yer talking about. Nothing more entertaining than watching him pick great players apart in doubles in national tournaments. :)

So how long is your warmup or Pre-match stretch routine ?? i imagine it is longer than it used to be when you were 30 years of age. Can you guys share some Good Stretch routines Pre-match so that it doesnt' take 40 minutes of match time to actually get warmed up ?? by the time you are warmed up, you are down a set...lol. Any good Pre-match warm up stretches for people with back problems ? Thank you in advance.

What are some of the more common racket/string parings in upper level USTA 65 yr age group?

I was watching a couple of matches today on Youtube, both singles and doubles. I did not seen an inclination for tremendous racket head speed or spin. Lots of control, slicing and lobs. Mostly flat or spin serves with a lot of returns, mostly chip/slicing on the backhand returns. Made me think, I wonder what the senior game will look like when all these "kids" age who are now using extreme western forehands and two handed backhands. Shoulders and wrists loose flexibility, racket head speeds slow down.

Anyone had back issues or surgery in your 50s? Any advice on playing with/after that? Twice in the last few months have had debilitating back pain. Scheduled an appt with an ortho. Worse than the back pain is not being able to play, and this is the time of year in Texas where the weather starts getting really nice to play even during afternoons.

If back pain is dues to similar reason as Federer has which is Back spasm or Back muscle strain/spasms, then you can take some time off with some steroids and you will be as good as new. but if your back pain is due to Disc/ herniated disc or herniated spine, then you have bigger problems only doctor might be able to fix. hopefully it is just a severe muscle strain.

Your better off doing some brisk walking for pre match warm up. It is more important to stretch after playing than it is before.

I would suggest for any of you guys with back problems to go to the website losethebackpain.com. I was having chronic back problems years back then I purchased their coarse for back pain relief and have had great success with it.

Was a close one. We are in Ft Myers. Lots of trees down in our neighborhood but our condo and most all homes were fine.

I ride the bike 5-10 mins, then use a roller on all the major muscle groups for 5 mins or so, then shadow swing all the strokes/footwork patterns for another 2-3 mins. 20 mins and good to go!

My buddy who is 63 and nationally ranked uses a PS 6.1 16x18 with a gut/poly blend.

I walk my dogs at 6 a.m. every morning for 4-5 miles, at 4+mph. Used to be a gym rat but didn't seem to jive with tennis, kept getting injured. Now do the walks and some band work and not much else. Probably play at least 2 hrs of tennis per day 5-6 days per week. When my string racket experiments create arm issues I go to Prince Classic Graphite 100 or Prince Original Graphite OS for a couple of weeks.

59 ... right calf 2+ months ago ... right hamstring 2 weeks ago. Singles at 59 is going to require letting more go ... and saying "good shot".

Your gym work was leading to more injuries? I would think it would be the opposite unless you lost some range of motion from not stretching.

Did you do rotator cuff work as well?

Did you do rotator cuff work as well?

I have a relative long history of gym work and exercise stemming from a military career as well as coaching/playing a number of sports. I played/coached baseball, softball, volleyball, ran 4 miles a day for years and freestyle wrestling. Now that tennis is my main sport some simple warmups for tennis with bands and walking seem to keep me going. My wife had rotator cuff surgery due to a yoga fall. My rotator cuff exercise is my daily 100-150 practice serves. I ease into it, taking about about 30-40 easy serves before I start "going for it." A 5 minute exercise band routine prior to practice serves seems to work for me. I used to spend a couple of hours a day in the gym. I haven't seen the inside of the gym for 2 or 3 yrs. Played 3 hrs of singles and 3 hrs of doubles the other day, but prefer to play no more than 2 hrs a day. I am trying to keep my knees, ankles, wrists, elbows and shoulders going. So far my back and neck have been trouble free. Experience tells me physicality can change dramatically in the blink of an eye, so am happy to keep going and going, until?.....

If you workout with resistance training properly it will prevent injuries. I suggest to anyone that really wants to keep playing as you age to do strength training and stretching. I'm living proof of that at 61years young I play at least 5 days a week and sometimes I practice twice a day. I play singles 99% of the time and rarely if ever can I not play because of injury.

Does "better" mean more or less alcohol? I enjoy my beer too.

Dude! Can you even buy those still? How old is that racket? Back in the day I played with wood too, but my rackets always broke at some point.

I'm 58 and back in tennis for the first time in the last 20-25 years. I've been playing a lot for nearly six months now and I'm hitting my backhand better than I ever have. My biggest problem is I've mostly been practicing with a ball machine and beating up a wall, so my footwork is off when I'm playing humans. And, since I'm 58 instead of 28, I can't cover the court like I used to. I could get better, but I bet I'm two strides slower than I was in my prime. It's a challenge to play baseline and play deep enough to handle deep balls with pace and then be able to run down the short balls. If I play on top of the baseline then the deep shots are difficult.

I'll get it figured out once I get some regular hitting partners. That isn't always easy, too. I'll never cover the court the way I used to, but I can work out a better strategy than I'm using now. It may involve more net-rushing and praying!
It means enjoying quality craft beers as opposed to quaffing cases of domestic light stuff, lol!

Haha. I bought him a drink at a bar in NYC years ago, had one question for him..."How does it feel to be the soundtrack of so many people's youth?" He laughed and said good question. We talked for about a little over an hour. Found him to be very intelligent, if not a touch manic.

At least you have an excuse. Woke up Saturday to go play and my left calf felt like someone hit it with a baseball bat. Absolutely no workouts or play since Monday, save a few mile walks. Took me over an hour to stretch it enough to get on court, and then it was down the middle hitting. Was actually tender to the touch.

Playing a practice singles match against a serious grinder tonight. I can usually out hit him, but if I am off in pace he gets to everything and it will be a long physical match. At least it is only in the 90's today and not 115!

That is when you fear a big tear. I find it ironic there are so many of us having this at the end of summer. You would think we would be at our "most prepared" after regular summer play. I sure would like to know the best way to prevent it. If it's squats and lunges ... I will do them. If it's roller ball massage... I'm in. Same with stretching. The ironic thing with my hamstring injury was it followed the most consistent month of leg stretching ever for me. The calf tear scared me (and p!ssed me off) ... so I was stretching every day. I got lucky on both calf and hamstring because they felt more like a major "grab" than a tear. I only wore the calf sleeves for a couple of weeks. Been off for 2 weeks with hamstring. I think I can hit ... but not much chance to play points because I still feel it.
