Prince Textreme Tour 100P (310g, 18x20)

I'm having the same problem as the user 'Bill' wrote on TW reviews on 12/15.

Comments: Dynamite! But I'm having some trouble with strings breaking. Admittedly, because of my wrist, I'm using a 16 g multi so it's soft, etc. but breaking after 2 hours, and happening near the grommets which are cracking very easily. Is anyone else having this issue -- with grommets and strings breaking? Any suggestions on a soft co-poly to add a little string life if that is the case? Although, I use the same multis on my previous racquet (Blade) and didn't have these same problems.
From: Bill, 12/15

I have used Tecnifibre Black Code 17 and Prince Tour XC 16L and strings are breaking very easily at the top, near the grommets.

I've seen that some of the grommets have cracked too, and the racquets are almost new. I have played each of them no more than 4 or 5 hitting sessions and they have not been misused or mistreated in any way.
Also, they have always been strung by different professional stringers at 22/21kg, well within the recommended tension range

Has anyone else experienced this problem? Is there a design flaw with the grommets or the last cross being so far down?

It is VERY annoying, the last day I broke 3 strings in 45 min and had no racquets left... Yes, I did mishit some of the balls like we all do, but I haven't had this problem with any other racquet. They pop on the first not-so-hard mishit.
All of them were freshly strung.

On top of that, I don't seem to be able to find replacement grommets for the 100P, and I don't think I'm willing to change them so often anyway.

Just crazy that you cannot find replacement grommets. I have seen several posts on TT about this issue over more than 1 year.
I used Prince racquets for years (my best years in tennis actually) and I would be vary happy to come back to a Prince racquet.
They turned over a new leaf with the Textreme line and the future seems exciting with new racquets coming.
IMO all this is promising but more needs to be done before Prince can be considered again as a top racquet brand, 100% serious and reliable.

It's not only that replacement grommets are non available. I haven't had this problem of string breakage near the grommets on a 2 month old racquet with any other brand.
Their grommets seem to be very fragile and rigid and very prone to cracking.

Though I have not had problems with grommets cracking or strings snapping early on my Textreme Tour 95 & 100P, the lack of grommets even on their latest series is really concerning. Even if they are releasing new rackets, who cares if they can't get their operation straight. I really do love the Textreme Tour 95 & 100P, but it doesn't look good for Prince, imo.

I bought 2 TT 100p's 3 mo ago and got grommets thru either TE or MWS can't remember. No probs with grommets in racquet though. I always buy grommetsxat same time I get racquet though. If I can't find them I usu don't buy racquet unless it's ridiculously inexpensive.

Try MWS or Tennis Machines. Both shows in stock. I bought 3 sets from MWS 4 months ago and they are the cheapest.

I tried the Touch Speed Pro based on the similar specs as my Tour 100P. Both were strung similar and although the Speed played well, I preferred the feel,of the 100P.

The Speed Pro is extremely precise, but has worse power and feel than the 100p. They both hit tight, high-RPM spin for an 18x20 with exceptional control for a 100.

My friend bought a Speed Pro and ended up having to lengthen it to get it to drive the ball effectively. The 100p has a bit of the same problem but I think it can be fixed with some minor balance changes. It's not nearly as big of an issue as with the Speed Pro.

Unless you need pinpoint accuracy, I would stick with the Prince. Even if you do need pinpoint accuracy, maybe try the Tour Pro 98 before you bother with the Speed Pro.

speed pro has a more crisp feel and a little more pop. quicker maneuverability. 100P has a more open pattern and a softer feel. my main gripe with the 100P is that it is pretty dead on off-center hits.

What do you think about the Speed Touch mp?
TW review was lukewarm (as for almost all Head racquets recently reviewed btw) but some people gave positive feedback

the touch MP is very similar to the XT LTD, just a more muted feel. i have been using the Pro more lately because the MP tends to be flimsy on off-center hits. it makes wonderful spin, though.

I didn't like the Speed Touch MP. It felt launchy, harder to control, weaker, almost amateurish to me.

Even though the Princes have a super-muted feel, they still get some good velocity on a powerful shot. The new Head rackets feel poppy but don't get the velocity you would think you would be hitting with it. They are a shell game to me.

i didnt find the speed mp particularly hard to control, but it does feel flimsy. especially on off-center hits and w no lead in the hoop.

once you adjust to the SW, the xt prestige pro may actually be the best of the current head racquet crop.

I know this is the 100P thread, but my new 100T chipped at the bottom grommets... 1st time strung. :(

It's a bit light so I might sell it and go with a Ezone 98, DR 98 or Phantom 100.
Looking for a standard length to pair with my DR 98+'s.

Juste received two of these beauty today. I'm surprised (and happy) that Prince really went for a more oval head shape instead of the ridiculously large, round heap shape of prior models. The head of the 100P is barely bigger than some 95 inch racquets.

My 15 yo has been using a 100p for about 3 months. Still has the same set of strings for 3 months - plain rpm blast .17ga. He won't let me restring it. All the grommets are fine. No cracks. I'm gonna restring in the next couple of weeks anyway. I may just get another, since he has beat this one into the ground. It a solid racquet and can take one Heck of a beating.

After all of the headaches, I went to see a professional stringer and customizer. He checked the grommets and said they are in good condition.

He said the problem could be a combination of 2 facts:
*The previous stringer was placing the starting clamp at the top of the frame leaving marks on the string at that place
*Because of the way the racquet is designed, there is a lot of room between the last top cross and the grommets.

With more careful stringing, the problem has minimized to a degree that I'm confident in going to play a tournament with them. String shearing keeps happening from time to time though.
I'm really sorry, because I love how the prince plays, but I'm starting to accept that it just doesn't suit my game as I tend to hit pretty high on the stringbed and I'm afraid it will keep happening.

I'm selling them ad a good price (post on the EU/UK classifieds section waiting for approval), but only within EU.

I played with it yesterday. Quick feedback:

While it's not such a big departure from my radical mp (18x20), it has an unbelievable plush feel, even with Luxilon 4G strung at 54 lbs. Very maneuverable, good spin, very effective on return with a big sweetspot, and very accurate. A very well-rounded frame that I adjusted to very quickly (I started a league match with it without hitting one ball with it, just the warmup). I got more "free power" than with the Rad on defense and block shots, but when I went full swing for a winner, it was very close. More control than power.

How does the 100P compare with the prince warrior 100 and wilson burn 100?

Appreciate the feedback
I demoed a Burn early this summer. It was pretty spin friendly and was felt pretty similar to the nCode Pro Staff that I had been using for the last 10 years. Just a little lighter and more powerful. I would say it is a little more powerful than the 100P but has a more muted feel; sort of the classic Wilson feel, which is a good thing. I really liked it and almost bought it but didn't.

When hitting with the 100P I can really feel the ball on the strings and pocketing, rolling or whatever. At the same time, the flexibility of this frame absorbs a lot of shock when hitting hard. The Burn didn't give me this level of feedback, but it also is more suited to a baseliner as it has a little more power and has easy access to spin.

The 100P is not a racquet for people who crave crazy spin but it produces all the spin I need. The 18x20 string pattern is surprisingly open and compares pretty closely to the pattern on a 16x18/19 on a Pro Staff.

The Burn and 100P are fairly comparable IMHO and both are worth checking out if you're looking for something a little lighter and bigger than a traditional players frame but like the soft feel that comes with it.

Of course, one of the problems when comparing these racquets is that Wilson seems to make about a dozen variations of each model so I'm only comparing the 100P to the Burn I used. Not sure which model I had, perhaps the countervail.

Got a demo of this racquet. Jeeez its nice to hold. Seriously underrated racquet, if you are a fan of 18x20 control racquets. Almost worth buying just for the aesthetic.

I held it over my tecs, the 8 strings across throat line up almost perfectly with the 315 16 x 19.

Tempted to buy one just because they are so cheap now. A leather grip, overgrip and a gut hybrid and it would be a great frame.

You gave me an idea with the leather. I like the weight distributed more along the entire handle than concentrated at the buttcap using putty and I don't like lead tape. I guess I'm not big into the polarized setup. Which string combination would you use and would it be for spin, power or control?

got a couple of 100p on the way. am trialling between POG OS all time favourite, a couple of phantoms, and 100p.
question is I guess does the phantom or 100p do anything better than a POG OS? or PCG100 (prefer the OS). i suppose the phantom looks the coolest, which wont make me hit a better shot...

If I get one, I toyed about putting full gut in it (lol) to give it extra power and to make it super arm friendly, though would probably just put the same gut/poly hybrid in as I usually use, as for me, it is the best combo I've ever used. I really don't need this racquet, but am struggling badly not to buy one. I'm having a serious racquetaholism relapse lately. at only AU$150 though it makes it very tempting....

Just bought a used 100P from TW. Thanks TW! Now I need to put my string in to give it a long shakedown against the Yonex DR98. Did everyone drop the tension on the 100P due to the 18x20 stringbed? If so, how much of a tension reduction worked for you?

Hi. How did the 100P compare to the DR98?

Joey

Rookie
I've been playing with the 100P in comparison to the DR98 for a couple more weeks now. I still find them very similar, but I think the effectively more open string pattern of the 100P gives it a bit of a higher launch angle and a bit less directional control than the DR98. I think that's why it may feel a bit less precise on volleys than some of the other sticks people compare it against. I find more depth and a bigger sweet spot with the 100P. The DR98 has a bigger drop off in power on off-center hits and when defensively blocking the ball, but feels more scalpel-like when I am hitting aggressively.

Hi

I am deciding between the 100P and DR98. Please provide more feedback.

Tried the 100P today and I was very impressed and also surprised. This is the most "open" 18x20 I have ever seen. The spacing in the center drill pattern is
almost the same as my DR98, which is a 16x19. Not sure why Prince didn't just make this a 16x19? Anyway, very nice hit indeed. Great blend of power
and control. Right in the same ballpark as my DR98 and Dunlop M3.0. Doesn't feel like a 11.5 oz racquet....feels like 11 oz. Very easy to swing. Only hit for
a little while but I am glad I found this one. I never tried it until now because I typically don't like 18x20s cause they are too low powered.

Please elaborate on the differences and similarities of the DR98 and 100P

Hi

Joey, I just did the change from 100P to DR98. DR 98 has easy power, more spin and is more comfortable. There is a swing adapt period to respect, but once you do that, control is about the same.

Played with both the DR98 and the Prince 100P earlier this year. I loved the Prince 100P on serve and forehands - was very consistent on both first and second serves and I was able to pound my forehand with authority. The feel was good - a bit crisp, but otherwise muted, and I found easy power from all over the court. The DR98 was more of an all-rounder - it did everything well, and nothing poorly and the feel on contact was softer and more plush than the 100P. Perhaps most importantly, I found it easier to come over my backhand with the DR98 (one hander) which made a difference while playing a match - I ended up feeling more comfortable with the DR98 on the court. However, I could absolutely play with the 100P and if my game we centered on groundstrokes and serves alone, I think it would have been a better choice.

Hi

I am deciding between the 100P and DR98. Please provide more feedback.

Wow, I posted that about a year and a half ago ... but here is what I remember. To me the DR98 feels better on a full swing. It has good power, a ton of spin, and feels very precise. I felt like the ball would unexpectedly fly long more often with the 100P. However the 100P felt more solid and stable on defensive blocks, chips, and half-volleys. The ball would have a tendency to die on those types of shots with the DR98. I got frustrated with the DR98 when playing heavy hitters because I couldn't play effective defense with it and ended up using the 100p for a while. Eventually I switched to the Pure Strike 98 which I found to be a better compromise (but ultimately too hard on my elbow).

When I played with the DR98, I did not think of defensive blocks, chips or half volleys to be one of its weaknesses - I normally play with more traditional players racquets and the DR98 is definitely more forgiving. That said, I'm sure its not quite as forgiving as a Pure Aero or other tweener style racquets. At the very least, I don't remember there being a significant difference for me at least between the 100P and DR98 and these types of shots. For what its worth, my regular hitting partner hits with the DR98 and his defensive play is immaculate - it would be with any racquet given his speed and skill, but the DR98 gives him that balance of power and control that lets him hit the shot he wants when he's on the run or has to react quickly.

Great review, I really like this racquet I think it is very under rated. Does everything well. Beautiful looking paintjob IRL too. The only minor quibble I had when I tried it was that it didn't come through quite as fast on flat serves as the smaller 95" head racquets I normally use, but that's to be expected I guess, and I'd probably get used to it after a day or so anyway.

Loving that bloke's short FH prep and racquet head speed too.

Isn't it interesting how different people can report such wildly different experiences with a racquet. It's part of what makes tennis so enjoyable IMHO. As your game develops you notice how the equipment influences your shots and how your shots influence your choice of racquet. I am always puzzled by people who stubbornly use frames or string set ups that are not well suited to their game because "I never use the racquet as an excuse". Um ok, so I guess all these pros who are so particular about their frame and strings are just excuse making losers then.

Simple fact is, having the right equipment makes the game more enjoyable and allows you to play your best. Of course there is always the doubt that you made the wrong choice, but I'm arrogant enough to assume that my racquet choice is the correct one!

I don't understand the varying responses about DR98 vs. TT100P comfort. Is it because they react differently on mishits? e.g., if you hit the sweet spot on a lot of racquets, it'll feel pretty comfy. Some racquets vibrate like crazy on off center hits or have a small sweet spot...
Which has a bigger sweet spot? The TW measurements seem to indicate the same size...

bought one on special even though I don't need it,
replaced the grip with a leather grip, plus an overgrip, plus vibration stopper.
had it strung with babolat vs touch in the mains and tecnifibre pro red code wax in the crosses at 55/53 and it has great feel, good power, plenty of spin, and is very arm friendly.

Here are the comparisons between the two. As you can see they are very similar racquets. However I have played with enough Prince and Yonex racquets to know that they two companies produce racquets that provide a different "feel" despite their similarities. It's totally subjective and comes down to a matter of preference. I have played with Yonex racquets and they are nice, well engineered racquets but I prefer the way the ball feels when it hits the Prince frames. Of course this is a general rule, but this has been my experience over the years.
