Not fair to the opponent Aswell.
It was fair to the opponent and the public. Justice is when a better player wins on the court. Lahyani served justice. This was reverse Garner who served injustice to Djokovic.

No it wasn't fair at all to the opponent. Read the rules. Kyrgios having his issues is his problem. Lahyani going down from his chair to give a pep talk to Kyrgios is not his job. Not even his own coach can tell him anything lol. Sends out all the wrong signals.

Right decision, but happy it's not too long as well. He doesn't need to be a scapegoat, but he needed to keep his professional distance in this instance. He'll learn from this and come back being the same umpire he was before. I think he's the best on tour, personally.

I can understand the suspension. I am a big fan and I will accept that he went out of his domain, so to speak. Anyway, it's just two tournaments and I am sure he will be back with the same charming smile. Also, it takes nothing away from the fact that he is still one of the top gold badge umpire on circuit right now and very well liked by everyone.

On a side note, sure was an eventful USO this year. New heat rule confusions (Murray/Verdasco), Alize Cornet's shirt change violation fiasco, this Kyrgios-Lahyani incident, that Millman-Djoko break in between games for shirt/shoe change and then the whole Ramos Serena incident.

Very bizarre USO happenings time around. I blame the roof! lol

Lol. Layani wasnt gonna work the next two weeks anyways.

Theres no big tourneys for him to go to. He wont be seen again until maybe Tokyo/Beijing and Shanghai.

This is a PR stunt. Basically take two weeks off and we'll time the suspension for when you weren't gonna work anyways.

Dont thinj people realize this. The gold badge umps like Mo and Fergus etc pick which tournaments they wanna work. Which are usually the big ones.

ATP Tour Suspends Chair Umpire Who Gave Pep Talk to Nick Kyrgios at U.S. Open

JENNA WEST
September 18, 2018
The ATP Tour has suspended chair umpire Mohamed Lahyani for giving Nick Kyrgios a pep talk at the U.S. Open, according to The New York Times.

Lahyani has been suspended for two weeks without pay by the ATP Tour. He will miss the China Open in Beijing and the Shanghai Masters, which he was scheduled to officiate in October. He is expected to return on Oct. 15 at an event in Stockholm, reports the Times.

"Despite the incident taking place at the U.S. Open, under the jurisdiction of the United States Tennis Association, the incident was still subject to ATP disciplinary action due to Lahyani’s position as full-time ATP employee and the high standards the ATP requires of its chair umpires regardless of the event to which he or she is assigned, in order to maintain the integrity of the Tour,” the ATP Tour said in a statement, per the Times.

During Kyrgios's U.S. Open match on Aug. 30, Lahyani came out of his chair to approach Kyrgios while the Australian was down 0-3 in the second set to Pierre-Hugues Herbert. Lahyani appeared to offer words of encouragement to Kyrgios, who ended up winning the match 4-6, 7-6 (8–6), 6-3, 6-0.

Umpires are not allowed to offer any sort of advice or encouragement to either player and are expected to stay perfectly neutral.

The U.S. Open did not suspend Lahyani at the tournament but released a statement saying his conduct "went beyond protocol." The chair umpire's actions upset several tennis players, including Herbert and Roger Federer.

It's like when Kyrgios was suspended for 8 weeks at the end of the season when there were hardly any worthwhile tournaments to play.

justified, but a bummer. he seems like a great guy, brings some fun and engagement to the court and given this is an entertainment-driven business there is value there. pay fine, serve as an example, move on...

Ah. Well sounds like he probably didn't wanna be there anyways then lol. I'm only saying this because notable umpires in candid interviews have stated they will skip big tournaments sometimes if they wanna go on vacation and such.

As an unauthorized representarive of all of those who spent the money and made the effort to get to and then sit in the sweltering afternoon heat in the sauna referred to as “Court 17” to see two professional tennis players at a Major give their reasonable best efforts to win the match Layhani is our hero.

While I don’t wish to minimize the personal affront or financial cost of this slap on the wrist I do expect it to be somewhat mitigated when Layhani takes home the ATP Coach of the Year Award for his terrific work with a tennis talent that some have said is not presently coachable.

PS, do you think the events Which Dare Not Speak it’s Name played some role ? Did that chubby French Umpire (can’t remember the name) who tried to help Davydenko with the yips ever get suspended because that was arguably more bizzare than telling a player “this isn’t you” and to start trying. Nick is sensitive and just needed a little love.

should llahany pay Herbert that lost prize money ?
The stakes were high, and that was a total momentum shifter.

I found it reprehensible. But it would be difficult to determine that the victory was in the bag.

Herbert could probably press the matter.

I like Lahyani but this suspension is warranted. He went over the line. Coaches can't even coach their own players and they get punished if they do so. His decision to go down from his chair and give a pep talk sends the wrong signals. Not fair to the opponent Aswell.

There are more stakeholders involved than just Care Bear. This was just a more delicate (and effective) way to warn about tanking.
