For all Fed fans before 2003..

I'm Fed fan ever since I started following tennis in 2001. I remember all of his first important wins. First tournament, first M 1000, first GS 1/4fin etc..

My question is: How you feel about fact that your favorite player is GOAT??

It's crazy when you think about it. Maybe it's luck. Sometimes, I can't believe it. Hey, my favorite player is GOAT.

This is troll thread since we know there are no Fed fans from before 2003.

Have to admit I wasn't happy when he beat Sampras at Wimbledon, my favorite player back then, but I've always loved his playing style.

All the way. WTF 2002 vs Hewitt is still one of the most devastating loss ever.

Fought back well in the 2nd set after giving the break at 3-3 with a DF even saved a MP on Hewitt's serve

Those 4 SPs and 3 BPs at 5-6 misses in the first set and that 5-5 game break with two DF were disgusting though .

First saw Fed play on TV against Andre at Basel in 1998. I had heard of him previously and thought he had an interesting game. I started watching a few more of his matches, but became a fan only in 2000 when I watched him on TV play Clement in the AO. I thought then, "this guy is going to be really good," and the buzz was already slowing starting for Roger. I first saw Roger play live in 2002 in Key Biscayne against Andre and still was thinking, "he's going to win slams!" His movement, his speed, his FH in 2002 was exceptional, to put it mildly.

But I never had any thought he'd be as great as he was. I was expecting a Mac/Lendl career for Fed: 8 majors perhaps.

Who is next?

Good question. My next pick was Delpo and I think he could have won more slams if hed not been injured. No one really stands out to me like Fed and Djokovic did but I do like Tsitsipas and Shapovalov. I think Zverev will win slams but not a fan of him

There's no luck IMO.

He has to earn it, and sure he did using all of his talent, sheer motivation and determination.

Do I get bonus points for having been a hater since before his first Wimbledon title?

I've had to suffer through 20 of these puppies.
@Red Rick What made you hate Roger? Was it tied to the fact you were a Roddick fan, or something separate from that? I hated McEnroe with a visceral, debilitating passion because he beat Ivan so often. Was the Roddick thing a factor with you or no? It's interesting to ask a normal person like you why you hate another player.

Neutral, turned fan, after he swatted Hewitt away in the 02 Miami SFs. Hewitt was the first "villain" player for me. He wasn't my fav for a while though, probably after Andre retired.

A question to all early Federer fans:

Did you always have the chance to watch all his matches live? I have missed only like 10 matches since 2006/07 when my Internet was able to show watchable streams. But for many years almost only the Slams were shown on TV here, so I couldn’t watch that much during my very first years as Federer fan (since about 2004).

I watched almost all important matches. Eurosport and later Sportclub were sport programs with live tennis matches. Before that ttx was only option.

I remember my first streams were on Chinese programs called „PP Live“ or “Sop Cast” and then it had channels like CCTV5 or Star Sports. He was always "Logaa Fedelaa" for them. ;)

Congrats! It must have been an awesome journey. I became a true tennis fan andconvert when I watched Wimbledon 2007 final.

Here's the slightly exaggerated version, largely from the perspective of somebody who was about 10 when he first saw them play each other. I'm also pretty disagreeable, so when things I don't care for get really really hyped it kinda makes me dislike it.

I think I have talked about this before.

Imagine being 9 year old, and the first time you see Andy Roddick play is in at the 2003 Australian Open with the visor beating El Aynaoui 21-19 in the 5th, all the excitement and charisma in the world.

Then, some months later at Wimbly, incomes this ugly duckface with the most reprehensible looking ponytail, who looks as disinterested as can be but proceeds to hit

every

ducking

ball

on the line.

And he wins

And he proceeds to win 21 more times vs Roddick and 7 more times at Slams and 4 more times in Slam final.

And then when he wins the final Slam final vs my hero, his 361th in total and about his 82nd Wimbledon title, he looks Andy straight in the eye and says the immortalised words

"I know how you feel"

"I know how you feel"

"I know how you feel"

"I know how you feel"

It's the tennis equivalent of talent a terminal patient you know how unfair life is cause you missed the bus this morning. Frankly the only reason I understand why people like him is I truly believe we're completely messed up.

This actually isn't a bad analogy. Nick has been massively hyped since 2014. Fed was hyped starting around 2000, but most people thought Roddick would have the superior career.
Zverev is a better parallel. Climbed the rankings and did well in small tourneys, but didn't break through at the Slams.
