Tsitsipas comments on playing Medvedev - “It’s just boring”

A little salty, eh Stefanos? :)

On Saturday, Stefanos Tsitsipas encountered his fifth straight defeat at the hands of Daniil Medvedev at Rolex Shanghai Masters 2019. After his back-to-back defeat against the Russian machine, Tsitsipas termed the matches against Medvedev as “boring” and was annoyed after his loss.

“Well, I don’t mean to be rude at all, actually, at all, but it’s just boring. It’s boring. It’s so boring that — I don’t know,” he said. “I hate myself, first of all, for putting myself into that kind of situation where I have to play in his own terms and not on my terms. And that’s kind of, I don’t know, reminding me of my childhood years when I was 12 years old playing inside the court,” the Greek lad continued.

Despite is shabby head-2-head record against the 23-year-old Russian, Stefanos Tsitsipas is confident about overcoming the machine, Medvedev. He believes that the chances of defeating Medvedev are more when his get opponent gets hold of the opening set.

“It was very close, and then — I don’t know. Just second serve was a bit, you know — I think once I get the first set from him, chances of beating him are getting higher because he will just keep doing the same thing. He won’t change really much. For me, in order to beat him, I just need to get the first set. That’s it,” Stefanos Tsitsipas explained.

On Saturday, World Number seven, Tsitsipas flawed a forehand at 5-all in the season set, he regretted his mistake at that instant and later reflected upon the places where he needs to work upon. “I should concentrate less on the technical side and leave that on the side during the match and be aware more of what’s in front of me and not think technically too much,” Tsitsipas added.

The Greek typhoon of tennis, Stefanos Tsitsipas dethroned the defending champion and the top-seed, Novak Djokovic in the quarterfinals of Rolex Shanghai Masters 2019. Now, he holds a positive head-2-head record against the Serbian legend.

“I don’t know if I’m going to be able to beat him the next time or the time after that one, but I know there’s going to be a time where I’m going to find opportunities and beat him,” Tsitsipas said. “Probably two, three, four, five, six years’ time, I don’t know, but it’s going to come at some point. The chance of opportunity will be somewhere there. As you saw today, it was very close in a tiebreak,” he added.

This is just classic Tsitsipas talk right after a loss. It just so happens to be Medvedev this time around. I think he really contemplates and thinks matches through afterwards, especially losses. He's got that persona about him as well. A bit of humility wouldn't hurt for sure, but he does go quite into detail which I like. He's also pretty spot on, regardless of whether he sounds salty or not, things that need changing, etc...

Sounds a lot like playing against Nadal or Djoker.

Good sign for Medvedev, bad sign for the attacking-game enthusiasts like Tsitsipas.

Right. Boring. C’mon Tsitsipas, I ain’t Einstein but I’m also no dummy!

Anyway, as far as his latest match with the Mad lad, I do actually agree he’d have had a very good chance if he’d gotten that first set, and the thing is he played quite well and could have done it, but he let it go. Wasn’t clutch enough. But I feel his tactics and performance were right. He’ll win against Med sooner than later, I think.

Besides him being refreshing by not falling into the same cliches, he's the only next gen besides Shapovalov that's fun to see on the court.

Wonder if Medvedev will get bored of beating him every time.

Not that Med is boring but it seems Tsits finds it boring to play him because he's not able to play on his own term; or in other words, Med doesn't let Tsits dictate the game and he clearly hates it. Boring is just a bit of a lame term he chose to use.

I still can't tell who's going to last and will dictate the game after the big 3. Zverev played well until the final but then he was so passive against Med. Hard to tell who's going to run away with it - if at all.

Med Bear lulls people to sleep. He wants them to not play aggressive, as Med Bear does not want to play aggressive tennis.

Put simply, Tsitsipas has got to find a way of making Medvedev play on HIS terms rather than the other way round. Only then will it not be so boring.

I wondered about that. I wondered why Alex was so passive while he played such a beautiful aggressive game against Federer but then again, Alex does have the tendency to switch to passive. It's a mystery to me.

I really like the part where he says that all he has to do is win the first set. I mean, Djokovic won the first set in Cincinnati, but then Med changed his tactics and won. Nadal won the first 2 sets in USO final, then Med changed his tactic and almost won the match. But who the hell are Nadal and Djokovic? Don't even compare them to the GOAT Tsitsipas, he would never let Med come back from one set down. :-D :-D :-D :-D

Anyone else see Medvedev snap at the ballkids....His US Open episode was not a one off...He's a little tightly wrapped and may usher in a new reason for a Lendl like reception among fans...Yeah he's boring like the Djoker....killing you with backboard like defense and little or no net play.....great counter puncher but the personality of a doorknob....very flat and prickly persona....Glad I've got alot of old matches on DVD...

Of course, if he's able to do it then he won't find Med all that boring after all.

Fed is 3-0 against Med Bear. ;)
Fed is 0-0 against prime Medvedev. Medvedev's explosion came in the second half of 2019. Federer did not face the same player, and their next match won't be as easy for Roger. Not saying Roger can't defeat Med, but his older matches are not a good antecedent given the fact they all were against a less experienced Medvedev. Remember just in Shanghai Federer lost to Zverev and Medvedev destroyed Zverev in 2 sets and winning the last set 6-1.

True. Of course, Medvedev will never face 23-year-old Roger.

True. Time machines have not een created. But just because old Federer is 3-0 against pre-prime Medvedev, it doesn't follow that old Federer dominates this robotic version of Medvedev whose explosion came in the secod half of 2019.

We have to see if Federer (and Nadal and Djokovic) can still stop Medvedev in 2020.

I know, I was just messing with @MichaelNadal . I am very well aware that this Med Bear is not the Med that Fed played.

I'm not sure this is mensa material, maybe Tsits is an instinctive artist on the court?

Frankly I think boring mode and waiting and waiting was working for him in the first set. Medvedev slammed the door from 0-40 late in the first, but he won't do that every time. Its no coincidence Tsits broke himself a bit after that game slipped. His mind/focus was blown probably coming so close after the previous frustrations.

Fascinating comments, probably better to just watch the presser.

There's very likely something about Med's game that us humble viewers just aren't fully comprehending imo. We can witness players playing poorer against Med, read comments from Zverev and Tsitsipas, but we might not be able to understand the nuances that make him so hard to beat right now

Medvedev follows Tilden’s advice. First, don’t let your opponent get in rhythm. Do everything to disrupt it. Second, defeat your opponent mentally and the match is won. Tsitsipas is the perfect pigeon for Medvedev.

It took me years to learn to play Medvedev style. I hate myself as I’m playing. It is so damn boring. But it’s also winning tennis. I’ve had people leave matches before losing, telling me that it’s so boring to play me. Completely mentally defeated.

Super salty. This is the era we have to look forward to? Bitter players in defeat and arrogant Russians?

Can we clone the big 4 please?
At least two of the big three are extremely boring personalities off court - I said at least two because chances are that all of us have a preference among the three and we inadvertently choose to ignore their boring aspects. Tsitsipas and Medvedev are great personalities for the game. Tsitsipas analyses his games like no other youngster his age. The way Medvedev riled up the NY crowd only to embrace them at the end of it all was quite interesting to watch. I am ready for new blood. No big three any more.
