Glad he’s physically okay and super glad he’s staying in! Looking forward to his next match.

Rafa won't even have to lift a finger if Djokovic loses to Thiem and Federer, because Djokovic won't even make the SF :)
Djokovic has to make the Final to have any shot at #1.

I couldn’t watch the match, what happened exactly?
He looked a little rusty and a bit slower than normal. But I think if he cleans up a few things he could turn this around.

Zverev really did play great. Not close to top form Rafa and top form Zverev. But he says he is healthy so I feel good about his chances to win out. Honestly think he will beat Med easily, so it comes down to Tsits.

Nadal doesn't beat anyone "easily" indoors lol

Maybe not easily, but in straights. Med has not looked impressive in his 2 matches on indoor hard. He does not have very offensive shots with power. He looked shaky against Tsits at times. I think if Rafa can play aggressive and find his form, he will straight sets Med, or at least beat him.

Rafa's post-RR1 press conference

Rafa said he had no abdominal pain during the match. He will keep playing (y):

Rafa’s doctor, Angel Ruiz Cotorro (Director of Clinica del Tenis), stays optimistic after Rafa’s match :):

Vamos Rafa!

Rafa's exchange with Italian journalist Ubaldo Scanagatta at the press conference:

7NEWS, November 12, 2019:
¤¤ Rafael Nadal has hit back at a well-known Italian tennis journalist [Ubaldo Snagatta] for suggesting he had lost motivation for his tennis career following his long-awaited wedding last month

(An excerpt)
The world No.1 had an uncharacteristically mistake-filled performance in his ATP Finals opener ...
The match was his first since pulling out of the Paris Masters semi-finals with an abdominal injury, which came just weeks after he married long-time girlfriend Xisca Perello at a lavish wedding in Mallorca. ...
The poor play led journalist Ubaldo Scanagatta – who has had numerous exchanges with Nadal, including at the Australian Open in January – to test his relationship with the Spaniard.

US: "Tonight you were playing very short many times. I don't know why, because you're not used to that. I'd like to know, for many people to get married is a very important distracted thing before the marriage, during the marriage, after the marriage. I'd like to know if somehow your concentration on tennis life has been a bit different, even if you were going out with the same girl for many, many years."
RN: "Honestly are you asking me this? Is a serious question or is a joke? Is it serious?"

US
: "It's serious. Is not something that..."
RN: "Okay. I surprise, is a big surprise for me (that) you ask me this after I have been with the same girl for 15 years and having a very stable and normal life. Doesn't matter if you put a ring on your finger or not. In my personal way, I am a very normal guy. Maybe for you was – how many years have you been with your (partner)?"

US: "Wife, 30 years this year."
RN: "And before? Ah, maybe before you were not sure. That's why. Okay. Okay. We move to Spanish, because that's bulls***. Thank you very much."
...
Nadal laughed amid the reporter's persistence towards the end of the exchange with Scanagatta and clearly took issue with the line of questioning, having played through pain and returning to the tour from numerous injuries. ¤¤

The answer is to make this man, Ubaldo Scanagatta, a very unsuccessful "reporter" in the future by not only pointing out what a fool he is but also never again taking a question from him and telling him, in public, why his questions will never be answered again. That's how you handle scum like this.

I had told you that this surface is the single worst surface on tour for Nadal's game. His forehand doesn't get any spin here and just sits up.
Even at his absolute peak (in 2010 and 2013) he had trouble. In 2013 - he played the best hardcourt tennis of his life, but couldn't win here.
How were you expecting him to do well after nursing a recent injury and at the age of 33?

You'd think that someone who is allegedly a seasoned tennis reporter would use his head a bit before asking questions. Anyway, I just read in another thread that Ubaldo is in fact asking for an apology now for Rafa's response to his "innocent" question. What a grade A doosh bag.
Nadal should simply refuse to take any more questions from this tool from now. Half his credibility will go down the drain. Lets see how his career as a journalist goes after that

Rafa comes back from two breaks down, saves MP down at 1-5 and wins the match versus Medvedev in a 3rd set TB. Greatest comeback at WTF ever? Not sure his game is looking as fantastic as I would want, but he kept digging in, kept fighting. Vamos!

Novak now needs to win the tournament if he wants the YE#1. Who is cheering for Roger tomorrow then? ;) :)

Rafael Nadal will finish as year-end world No 1 if:

• He wins the tournament
• He makes the final with two round-robin wins
• He makes the final with one round-robin win and Djokovic does not win the tournament
* He wins at least one round-robin match and Djokovic does not win the tournament

Simply put:

Nadal is #1 if Novak does NOT win the tournament.
If however, Novak wins the tournament:
Nadal will need to AT LEAST reach the final to ensure Novak is NOT #1. If Nadal loses in the SF, and Djokovic wins the tournament, the Serbian would be #1.

I had to leave after the first set, was following the score online and saw Rafa won the second set and was 0-3 down in the third, I thought he was done.....

I am ASHAMED to ever doubt my boy!

What a guy.

What result do we want in the Tsitispas vs Zverev match? Not quite sure what all the different scenarios mean right now.
i would think we want tsitspas to lose because that is who rafa plays next. and if he beats him he will be 2-1 and there will be 2 players with 2 losses and rafa will make semi.

that being said zverev could lose and then lose to medvedev and be 1-2 and med would be 1-2. and if rafa lost to tsitis he would be 1-2.

Is it possible 3 players could end up 2-1 and also possible 3 could end up 1-2? I guess so and thats why they keep track of games and sets incase of a tie.

but basically the way i see it is if tsitisi loses today rafa holds his own destiny. he books a trip to semis with a win if tsitis loses because two players would have 2 losses.

So state of play for Nadal, as I understand it.

He can no longer finish second in the group. If Zverev beats Med, he is out.
If Med beats Zverev, and Nadal has to beat Tsitsi, and if he does he finishes top of the group (as positive H2H vs Tsi).

Here is an interesting bit of trivia for fellow Rafa fans:

New York:
In the final set of the USO final, Nadal took the lead and Medvedev came back, Nadal was up 5-2 in final fifth set, Medvedev fought back but Nadal kept him at bay and won.

World Tour Finals:
In London, Medvedev took the lead, Nadal came back, Medvedev was up 5-2 in deciding set. Nadal fought back, Nadal won.

He just won't stop fighting for every single point! :)

Yeah, quite easy to notice similarities in these 2 matches endings with the main difference being the fact that Medvedev failed to come back from 2 breaks down (by just one point). If I were Medvedev I’d be really frustrated after 3 meetings they had with Rafa. This mental edge should help Nadal going into 2020, as I believe we’ll see a lot more of this rivalry. Looking forward for their match on clay, huh.

Its pretty awesome the way Rafa doesn't have much to defend on clay next year (relatively speaking compared to most other years), so world #1 Rafa would not be feeling as much pressure at the start of next year's clay season :)
Whereas usually when Rafa is #1 he's got a truckload to defend on clay and no room for error.

It's amazing that he stands a very good chance of ending the year as #1 without sweeping the clay season. He won't have much to defend on clay until Rome by which time, fingers crossed he is fit, his game would have bedded in.

Cool!

Yesterday morning I had to leave when the Nadal/Med match was 0-4 in the third set. I assumed it was over and did not check to see the final score. I thought it was also over for retaining #1 for the year.

Then last night, in this very thread, I learned Nadal had come back to win! Really? How cool was that? I was surprised and happy.

And then this morning Federer defeated Djokovic in 2 sets, and Rafa clinches YE#1! How cool is that???

What a nice day this is!

Many congratulations to Nadal for the 5th Year End #1. Most consistent player in the slams this year (having made SF or more at each event) and a great record against next gen as well.

Oldest year end #1 for a guy who everyone thought would be retire early. Nadal continues to defy expectations, and he is not yet done..
