Dense stringbeds and better kickers

I suggested in another thread that there seems to be a pattern that frames with dense stringbeds seem to produce kick serves and topspin serves with more action on them, but obviously are less spinny from the ground. Kevin T observed this as well. Anyone else see a trend?

fxp prestige mid strung tight gave the most vicious spin, by a few thousand rpm, that I have ever hit. groundies were really flat though.

I have played with both the n6.1 18x20, and the 16x18 with the same setup ( NXT 16@58 ). The kick from the 18x20 was nowhere as good as with the 16x18.

while i get enough kick from my modded 106 blades, i get more rpms with my wifes ntour two 105 (16m pattern), but not the pace. the latter most probably (i don't say definitely since i'm not going to add lead to that one to balance it "my way") because i don't use this stick regularly, just from time to time when it happens that my blades are for restringing.

i get enough spin from the TF325's (18x20) on my serve. but notice more action on a 16x18 frame like the O3 Hybrid Tour. since i get enough on my 18x20 frame i don't see the glaring need to switch frames.

Since we're listing examples, I've noticed this phenomena (sp?) twice in this week alone with the nBlade98 and the DNX10MP. if i thought about it, i could likely name several more. I realize this is counterintuitive

Here are the frames kevin listed:

Mojo,

Funny you mention dense stringbeds and better kickers; I agree completely. I have hit the best kick serves of my life with (in this order) 1. Head Pro Tour 280 (97in, 18 x 20) 2. Head Astral Pro (90in head, 18 x 20) 3. Kneissl Tom's Machine (95in, 18x 21) 4. Dunlop Revelation 200g (95in, 18 x 20). All those frames are pretty flexy but do have dense stringbeds.

Perhaps the dominant factor is the flexibility of the frames and not the string pattern. The best way to examine this would seem to be comparing different string patterns on otherwise identical frames. In cases where there is a version of a racquet available with a denser string pattern, most people seem to feel that the more open pattern produces more spin. So the interesting question for me is...are most denser patterned racquets designed with more flexibility in the frame to compensate?

This is just a total spitball as well here...but...

Consider the possibility that different factors could become more or less important for groundstrokes and serves. Could racquet flexibility be a more important factor in spin production on serves than the ball string interaction? I am speculating on this because when the ball is struck on a serve it is usually moving much slower both linearly and rotationally than when the ball is struck off the ground.

i have no idea...it was just a thought that occurred to me as there seemed to be a pattern. perhaps comparing the two n95s might be a good comparison as i think those are identical frames save for the 16 vs 18m's?

Don't agree with this at all. The RD Power 10 MP generated WAY more kick on the serve than a Prestige Classic, either the Mid or 102sq. inch. version.

I never though the Pro Tour 280 was a very good serving racket period, the Pryamid Tour on the other hand IS the exception to the rule.

The Revelation 200g also was an exception, not much pop but effortless *controllable* spin on the serve, not gaudy spin like the RD Power 10 MP or Pure Drive Plus, however.

I think it's much more a function of the individual racket. All things being equal, however, more open would be better for kicking serves with the same frame in my opinion.

They are, though I've never hit with the 18x20 version. Someone else can maybe weigh in on that.

I will say that despite the 18x20 pattern I can hit monster spin off the ground with the nBlade MP. So in that particular case I believe it is just the spin capability of the frame despite the string pattern.
