Arrogant, petulant jerk. Times of adversity show true character and Djokovic has shown his arse proper on many occasions lately, this one being the latest but somehow not the most egregious all things considered.

Except for a few exceptions like Nadal who don’t break/throw racquets, the majority of professional tennis players behave like jerks on-court when they are losing or playing poorly. This sets a bad example and most junior players behave like this also. So, Djokovic deserves criticism for all his unsportsmanlike behavior, but let’s not single him out for this as he is just a reflection of the poor standards of sportsmanship displayed by serious tennis players since the days of Connors/Nastase /McEnroe. Tennis has long stopped being a sport where players were expected to behave like gentlemen and ladies. Maybe, this incident will cause at least some players to behave better and set a better example for kids.
I was a big fan of Sampras because he was a throwback in terms of how he behaved on court and he set an example for me about proper on-court behavior from someone in my generation.

I can assure you that the USTA (and other parties of interest) consulted many lawyers when devising the relevant code book and that the highest acting official representative of the USTA (the tournament referee Mr. Fremiel) was well informed as to the contours of this rather straightforward case. It was not even close to being an unimaginable fact pattern as any lawyer or law professor (much less one working with a tennis sports body) might imagine and such matters would certainly have been well understood by such a decorated tournament referee:
"Mr. Friemel [is] Head of Officiating for the ITF, a position he has held since 2014. Throughout his career, he has worked at the highest levels of tennis officiating. A Gold Badge certified umpire and referee, Friemel has been a Grand Slam supervisor since 2001. In addition, he has served as referee at numerous ATP and WTA tournaments, has been the referee at a Fed Cup Final and three Davis Cup Finals—including the 2018 Finals—and was a member of the Referees’ Team at the 2016 Rio Olympic Games. Friemel served as the Chief Umpire at the US Open from 2016-18. "

True, but the lost MP's were a two way street; both Federer and Djokovic contributed to them. Djokovic only has himself to blame for the DQ.
