Idiotizing someone does not and will not make sense, especially to athletes who are the faithful manifestation of the entertainment culture to which we are imbued.

Do those morons realize he's a owns part of a private jet usage company?
He's too nice to tell the environmentalist whackos to F-off but I'm not.
The one silver lining to the current pandemic is that now the sane people realize that what the temperature of the earth in 2200 is going to be is completely unimportant.

Djokovic breaks rackets on a daily basis using up Earth’s resources. How is that good for the environment?

Sane people know that the big problem is climate change. We have been living with viruses, and we have science to help us with disease, and with climate change. If leaders follow the science!

Absolutely pathetic. Same story everytime. What makes you think that his on your team? Pretty backhand? Apparently they want to educate Roger on practices of his decade old business partners. The man is a partial owner and a face of private jet company. (not to mention the Alan Jones comment) If you want to be against him then do so openly, as this is simply disrespectful to him and his intelligence. He's a businessman who never seemed to care about the environment all that much. If the eco issues are really that important to you and you want to root for someone then there's one plant based eating, tesla driving, electric cars advertising player for you. The best thing however would be to stop assigning traits to famous people that were never there to begin with, not pretending that they share the same values and morals as you do.

I actually find it highly disturbing how obscenely rich people forgo ethics for an objectively paltry percentage of their net worth.

How difficult can it be to just reject an advertiser or sponsor whose philosophy disagrees with you, when you know full well that it makes absolutely no meaningful difference to your finances.

To be fair to Roger, he is from a country that produced Nestle, and horded **** gold.

Agree

Environmentalists are doing very important work, but I'm not sure what they expect from Roger Federer. He's the last guy who'll ever take any kind of principled stance off the court. Not to say he's a bad guy; he's just never been especially socially conscious.

Michael Jordan was his sporting hero growing up, and he's very much taken a Jordan-esque approach to his off-court affairs (sans the gambling).
Except for the millions of his own dollars he’s spent - and the years he been involved with the foundation he created - to build schools for the most impoverished children of South Africa.

And except for the many charity matches to meet relief efforts he’s hosted or participated in that have raised millions for relief.

And except for the million he just donated to help w Covid relief this year.

But other than that, yeah - he has no off court principles.

I agree that he has a track record of being charitable with his money. However, there's a difference between being charitable and making a public statement that can be perceived as political in nature. It's that latter category Roger has shied away from. His prerogative.

Philanthropy has made a bit of a comeback, but it's due to very unfortunate reasons. Socially-conscious environmentalism is not the same thing.

The post I was responding to spoke of “social consciousness” and being altruistically principled - and noted Federer is essentially not motivated to act in those ways.

I pointed out Federer’s done some important social and altruistic work.

It's not my term. Someone else used it. But environmentalism is hardly that novel or dangerous an idea despite all your alt-right shaming/vice singalling.

I don't really see how covid quarantining has proven anything about climate change other than to bump it down the list of priorities.

Socially conscious environmentalism by individuals is nothing more than shaming / virtue signaling. It has no real effect on the actual problems.

We all all knew this of course, but Covid quarantining has proven it.

Michael Jordan once replied that ‘Republicans buy shoes too’ when asked why he was not vocal on political issues as a big part of his financial worth was from his Nike contract and Air Jordan shoe brand. I guess Federer keeps his mouth shut on anything that is remotely political for the same reason - he wants to sell Moet champagne, Lindt chocolates, Rolex watches and Barilla pasta to people of all political convictions around the world.

Who knows what he really thinks about environmental issues or any other hot button issues? He is happy enough having his fans project their own views onto his silence. I’m happy that he is a big philanthropist - it does help his public image, but there are many other rich, public figures who don’t help kids in undeveloped countries as much as he does.
