I haven't watched an anime series in a while, but I did recently see Jin-Roh for the first time. A good movie, but the ending is rough.
I haven't seen many movies mentioned, so I may as well throw out a few movies that are worth seeing:

- Akira, of course. I saw this in a very large theater in 1998 at Fantasia, it may have been some sort of premier for the new English dub
- Basically anything by Satoshi Kon. I love Tokyo Godfathers and Millennium Actress in particular.
- Ninja Scroll is the first obscenely violent anime movie I saw, and the animation still stands to this day. The same animation studio/director also did Wicked City, Demon City Shinjuku, Vampire Hunter D (2000), and the somewhat cringey Highlander anime movie.
- The Escaflowne movie is a bit meh, but some of the art is amazing and there are 2 incredible action scenes.
- Angel's Egg is not the most enjoyable to watch, but as a Yoshitaka Amano fanboy I gotta say the visuals are interesting.

AoT Season 4 (part 1) was good but somewhat disappointing. The pacing is problematic and the storytelling is often so clunky and dull. But it hits some great heights and has some great moments.
But it pales poorly in comparison to season 1 of Vinland Saga. Episode 24 (the finale) is the best shizzle I've seen since watching episodes 62 and 63 of FMA: Brotherhood, an anime I watched again in its entirety recently.
Everything AoT constantly fails to do, Vinland Saga nails.
Guess I'll now remind myself whether Code Geass is any good or not before trying out Demon Slayer.

I'm watching Aria the Origination (on EP 8), regarded as the best Aria season by a lot of people. I think I prefer the 2nd season, Aria the Natural. I personally loved the added eerie and mysterious atmosphere they produced in some episodes.
I agree about AOT season 4 as well, despite everyone talking it up throught it's airing. IMO, it's weakest season so far.

I actually just finished the final Aria season and it's on par with the 2nd, thanks to those final few episodes. Very bittersweet and emotional, what a series.

I could never get into Attack on Titan. I think maybe it was because my brother hyped it up too much...I also just really hated all of the characters.

Use to love Attack on Titan, but I couldn't finish it. Animation and story went downhill. I decided to read the manga just to see what happens and was very disappointed, but probably glad in hindsight as I won't be wasting time waiting for it to finish as I don't see myself ever completing it.

Agreed on attack on Titan. Little bit slow. Demon slayer is awesome. Episode 19 is earth shattering. Also 16/17/18/19/20/21. If youve seen them you’ll know what I mean.

I'm already loving it - at episode 8.
Been spoiled recently in watching Vinland Saga and now Demon Slayer. And the animation is absolutely 10/10.
I do have a problem with the characters. Levi only really started to come along in Season 3 for me, and for the whole time I've found Mikasa to be one of the most dour damn boring main characters written in all of anime... and Eren isn't much better. There are characters I liked, especially Hange, Zeke and Erwin... ah, and Jean.
There is one show which I find to be amazing despite basically not caring for the characters, though many are VERY well written, and that's Breaking Bad.
There is currently a ****storm over the ending of AoT. Many fans are pissed and are basically demoting its 'masterpiece' status. A lot of long-time fans have turned on the series.

I wonder why most dubs are so outrageously bad. The AoT dub is embarrassing for the most part, though there are moments where I find it better, such as...
FMA Brotherhood remains the only anime I've seen where the dub is on the level of the sub. Some characters sound worse, some sound better. King Bradley sounds infinitely better in the dub.
the Owl reveal scene, and how epic it is when Eren Kruger states: "Because I'm the Owl, Grisha." But the writing is a bit different, as in the English dub they make Grisha appear like an idiot, which is not the case in the original in which he clocks on to the Owl before the Owl actually reveals himself in words.

Yeah, a lot of them just don't seem to pair well together, probably sounds strange or out of place, because we listen to English every day. Someone screaming or raging in dub can make me cringe, unlike maybe subbed.
I find most Japanese voice actors a lot more emotionally involved as well. I did watch FMAB dubbed, that was really well done. One of my first anime ever as well, in need of a rewatch I think...

Yeah the dub is really a mixed bag. The first episode of AOT is a good example of this. The entirety of the episode is having to tolerate Eren's annoying voice, but then,
The whole scene where he tries to save his mother but couldn't and she gets eaten is done perfectly and much better than the japanese version (in my opinion anyway)

It takes place in the Universal Century timeline of the Gundam story, which is by far the most explored timeline. Still, one doesn't need to have seen other shows of the timeline to enjoy this 7-episode OVA. Episodes are 50+ with the finale being about 90 minutes.
The English dub is definitely serviceable and one of the better ones. The story is tricky to follow and between all the action is a lot of heavy and political dialogue - but I never found it boring. There is a lot going on, though. If you're familiar with Mobile Suit Gundam in general then you'll know the drill: War, conflict, politics between the space colonies and the Earth (Spacenoids and Earthnoids), ace pilots, new radical technologies, destruction, despair, hope, and the awesome displays of Gundam power. I've not seen that many of the Gundam shows but this is the best I've seen so far. Also, it's on Netflix (in some regions).

I'm on episode 17 of Haikyuu as we speak. It's really good. You may also like Kuroko no Basuke, in that case.
Of course, we all have our own tastes. Still, by asking others for their picks it helps me find some new stuff, some of which I'll enjoy.
I know HxH is revered. Quite an investment though at 148 episodes. We'll see.

Haikyuu just gets better an better imo.
If you decide to watch Hunter x hunter, just know that the first 3 episodes or something are quite dull (and childish). You'll know if you want to continue with it or drop it after watching 4 or 5 episodes. If you do end up liking it though, you'll actually wish it was longer heh.

I've watched Monster. It's a great one.
Thinking of watching Mob Psycho 100 having just finished OPM, which was sick.
About subverting expectations though... my expectations weren't subverted in AoT. Can't say I cared for how it ended though in any case.
Got a few shows on the list to watch now, including a couple ongoing, so I'll let you know when I get around to more of Urasawa's work.

Yeh I'm talking about the manga. I read it. I mean it's basically what I assumed would happen. I know many aren't happy with a supposed "character assassination" though. But to me that makes him all the more human.
My main problems with both the manga and anime is, honestly, I just feel Isayama is a kinda clumsy writer. And I don't think he ended this story well in terms of the whole last arc. It felt like a slow inevitable slide to mediocrity. Sad but true, as that's exactly what transpired.
I think Isayama's main strength isn't the flair and natural pacing of his storytelling, but his concepts and ideas. But even that became rather dubious in the final arc. Overall it's a somewhat frustrating work which kinda stumbles over itself, but does hit truly great heights. Can't deny the heights it hits.

I really like both but definitely prefer CG. Never did like Light and always thought Lelouch was about as cool as it gets. Also the CG ending is legendary. And yeah Suzaku can do one most of the time.

Violet Evergarden the movie: Tear-jerker - drags on a bit long but if you follow the series the ending is definitely rewarding - 9/10
Bakemonogatari and its subsequent incarnations:
The unique visuals, style of narration and philosophical touch always impress. Author does sometimes try too hard for his own good but overall a show fit for adult watchers looking for something more sophisticated but also uniquely anime-like at the same time. - 9/10
Oregairu Season 3: Author has always been trying to do something different with this - no excessive melodrama, no fan service, just straight-up serious teenage drama / romance with some (not always well-executed) subtlety. Needa watch seasons 1 and 2 for the whole experience - 8/10
86: Latest arrival of the spring season. Again, starts off being a serious war drama about racism with little joking around. Heard it incorporates more fluff and drags on longer as the series progresses but happy with what I'm seeing so far. -8/10
