Players who never applaud their opponents

Most players will racket applaud their opponents for hitting a great shot or showing tremendous effort in chasing down a ball. Just about every player on tour does this at least semi-regularly. Some do it all the time (S. Williams, Djokovic and Nadal). Others very rarely (Federer and Sharapova).

However I have NEVER seen Andy Murray racket applaud his opponent. Not once. Though I haven't checked charity matches.

Who else past or present doesn't racket applaud??

DD : Don't know about past but certainly agree, never seen Andy Murray applaud another players great shot / effort. But remember, this is the same guy that yells at his box every time he loses a point. He is also the same guy that skulks when he is losing. So all in all, not a great role model for the game. It is called the 'Gentlemen's Singles" but that has become a tad ironic over the years. Not everyone plays tennis or indeed does anything that attracts great money and fame for the same reason. Some people love the craft or the art. Some people just want the $$$. Other's the fame / adoration. So Murray, plays tennis just to win. He is not interested in developing character. Next lifetime.

FYI...Nadal doesnt applaud opponents shot. I wanted to correct the OP as he said Rafa "does it all the time". He has actually stated he doesnt because "we are not here to applaud each other".

I agree. He does it very rarely, and only on some very very good shots, almost like 'okay, this was just too good'.

Roddick had the best reaction here. Players should have a more natural reaction like that instead of fake aplauding.

It does happen, but it's extremely rare. He has a couple in this collection

I've noticed WTA players tend to applaud far less often than ATP players, on average.

One notable exception is Naomi Osaka, who even occasionally applauds her opponents' serves, which is something I can't say I've seen any other player do. Kyrgios often audibly commends a good serve, though.

Federer very rarely applauds in matches that count, but I've noticed he applauds with regularity in exhibitions, which suggests he's conscious about not applauding when there are real stakes. Absolutely nothing wrong with that -- just an observation.

I absolutly agree. Murray is constantly yelling at his box and himself. He is the surliest on court player I have seen in the past 20 years. Since he is British, snooty tennis players overlook it and cheer for him anyways.

Bjorn Borg never applauded his opponent.

He explained why too. He said that it was his way of conveying (paraphrased), "to beat me, you have to that amazing thing you just did 100 times"... it was part of the intimidating, how-the-hell-can-you-beat-this-guy aura he projected

Then again, there are a lot of things Borg never did.

Borg was a badass

He's a Scot and I can think of many adjectives to apply to Scotsmen, but "snooty" sure isn't among them. And the stereotype that Brits are snooty died out circa 1975. This stereotype is no longer the reality, far from it:

Don't think Pete did it too much, but on the other hand he did run over and hug Edberg when he fell over after an intense rally, so he showed sportsmanship in his own way.

I was talking about Murray in that post. But you could say the same about Roddick tbh...
yeah true, though Roddick's match with Agassi in Cincinnati in 04 was one where both of them applauded each other vocally and often throughout. Was nice to see actually.

Murray is not British, he's Scottish. Only the English are British.

I always felt Djokovic did it kind of sarcastically. Like wow look at this mug that just hit this flukey shot against me.

Only he would know if it's sarcastic or not, I guess.
Against Federer I think he does it quite often and as a stress management technique. Like instead of falling over and being awestruck (like he used to up to 2011) just acknowledge RF is super talented and he comes up with these shots.

I will take the match ;)

That's another form of applauding. Roddick is saying Federer has taken his racquet out of his hands.

He smiled enough duing an exhibition! I remember when there was this "Battle Of The Sexes" TV contest on ABC back in the 70's! Evonne Goolagong played and defeated Ilie Nastase (didn't take it seriously) and poor Virginia Wade had to deal with the looping shots of Bjorn Borg! She had a few good points making Borg laugh using the doubles alleys running him from side to side, but he took it 6-3! :-D

Not sure if Murray applauds his opponent or not but he surely berates his box a lot.

OT... I don't think its important thing.. Nice to see applauding, ok not to applaud at all, ok to applaud occasionally...
Me personally like when see Novak applaud opponents shots, hate to see him smiling sarcastically...

Give the guy a break (not in the hip)! Most of the time he was praying his hip wouldn't give out on him!
