ROLAND GARROS 2021 TENNIS NEWS - FRENCH OPEN POSTPONED BY ONE WEEK AS ORGANISERS HOPE FOR FANS

The organisers of Roland Garros have taken the decision to postpone the season's second Grand Slam by a week in the hope of allowing fans to be in attendance for the event in Paris. A statement read: "For the fans, the players and the atmosphere, the presence of spectators is vital for our tournament, the spring's most important international sporting event."

Wimbledon: "Today the French Tennis Federation has announced that due to the exceptional challenges presented by the Covid-19 pandemic and national French restrictions, the staging of Roland-Garros will be postponed by one week.

This decision has been discussed with the Grand Slam Board, and, given the exceptional circumstances, is fully supported by the Australian Open, Wimbledon and the US Open."

The grass-court season reduced by one week
A statement released from the Grand Slam Board backed the move to postpone the French Open, while also announcing the grass-court season will be reduced by one week as a consequence.

“All four grand slam tournaments are united in their view on the importance of a meaningful build-up to every grand slam, to provide players of all competitive levels with appropriate opportunities to practice, prepare and compete on the relevant surface,” a statement released via Wimbledon’s official website read.
“It was for this reason that the grand slams, together with the Tours, were supportive of changes to the calendar to create an enhanced grass-court season of three weeks between Roland-Garros and the Championships from 2015 onwards. It is widely agreed that this change has been very successfully received.
“However, given the considerable challenges ahead of the FFT in staging Roland-Garros, and to avoid further impact on the rest of the calendar, the grass-court season will be reduced by one week in 2021.”

Federer cannot use this as an excuse not to play it. He should be aiming for quarters/ semis very best anyway so will still have time to prepare for Wimbledon. Also if he skips this he'll tank down rankings and legs will gave out at Wimbledon anyway

They didn't hold it, because they could afford it. Another one that demonstrates how far ahead they are in their preparations, compared to everyone else.

Fake or real pandemic whatever, RG organisers have shown their true colour. To them quality of tennis or comfort of players doesn't matter, nor does interests of the rest of the tour.

They are the worst slam for years but Wimbledon was worst of all last year. What a giant middle finger to sport that cancellation was.

No, I don't as it is probably the most boring thing to do. Nothing is "unconditional" least of all love. RG and USO didn't held their events out of love for the sport either. They held them, because they would have lost money they can't afford to lose. It is that simple. Even AO that had a lot of time to prepare for the organisation is basically in debt, because they wanted to keep the rest of the economy going, not because they wanted to see the clusterfvck they created.

being an optimistic person, i was already starting to plan some activities for 2022, in order to celebrate the end of the pandemic...
(a BBQ and a post-apocalyptic survival camp)
... but now i'm afraid the roland-garros guys might decide to organize their tournament at the same time :(

Their cancellation was not in their hands. WB tournament preparation especially the grass preparation starts from 2-3 months before the tournament as per WB documentaries. Due to complete lockdown in those months in UK, the surface wasn't really prepared.

Maybe we can say their was a lock of willingness and commitment on their part, they could have done something more for it, but still it was more excusable than what it has been given credit for.

Typical French, everyone has to get out of their way. I wonder if they will pay compensation to the tournaments that have to move aside to accommodate their arbitrary move?

A move which is pointless because a week is going to make very little difference to the French vaccination program.

I suspect that RG will try it on and attempt to take Wimbledon's slot.

FO is so selfish... So, they want more spectators and will jeopardize minor grass tournaments... Plus maybe this week delay won't help at all...

And other slam agree? Wow, what can they say? We disagree...

And, no one mention... Have anyone asked players about this? Is it good, bad, ok, not ok? No? Off course, why to ask those who actually play, they should be happy to earn money for their masters...
