A Question for Maestronians......

Just wondering, if Fed wasn't to win any titles this year, how much longer would you want him to play, or what results would you feel like he needed for you to want him to stay on tour? It's really hard to tell with him barely playing any matches in the past 1.5 years what he is or isn't capable of, so just wondering what your thoughts are. I guess Wimby will answer a lot of questions, but I feel like he's kind of playing, hoping he can bag another slam bc he feels pressure from Novak and Rafa. Had they been sitting at 14 slams I feel he would have retired last year at the latest for sure.

If he can produce entertaining attacking tennis worth watching, I don't think the world and I will mind which round it's in or which clay it's on: red, green or hard. If I had to be specific about some performance condition, I would want his relationship with players half his age to be summed up in one word: beatings. And he has to face Aslan.

But it's not up to us and he and his sponsors clearly don't see it that way, if Doha was anything to go by.

Same expectations I had after 2013. A QF at Wimbledon, maybe going further at IW, MI or Cincy. Set the bar low.

If you're pushing me, I consider 2020 and even 2021 as lost seasons so I think more of my expectations after 2020 AO. In which case I figured he needed to rest and heal of course and then go at it again on grass. I posted on here about my projected schedule watching him play which included Basel where I thought he might retire, but then Covid happened. So I think instead of 2020 with Olympics and Basel, it got transferred to this year and then with the extended layovers so to speak it stretches into 2022. Because this year he's going to play sparingly and it doesn't feel right to retire without an extended schedule. But if everything is opened? Likely next year is the end.

I hope he has some match play on clay. Gets a couple of good wins, gets some confidence flowing. Then, all eyes are on grass. If he bows out in R1-R3 then I guess it’s time to call it a day and hang up your boots. It’s probably not gonna get any better.
But if he goes deep in Wimbledon, he can continue until Wimbledon next year. Give himself as many opportunities as possible.

Great question. If Fed ended up not winning any titles this year, I would still want him to play as long as he possibly can on the condition that he is capable of getting to the later stages of some big events and challenging the absolute best of the best.

I'm interested in Fed's perspective on how long he wants to keep going, particularly given that he loved all the aspects of pro life (even the constant travel) before the pandemic, but now he has returned to a tour with much more rigmarole (if only temporary) which may impact how much he enjoys the lifestyle.

Yes that’s what I predict as well 2022 maybe Basel or Wimby will want to go out with a crowd chanting. He will stick around do Laver cup every yr and a lot of Exhos..
I’m not a Fed fan obviously but I think generally his fans and general public don’t care they just want to see him play he is such an icon and massive popularity around the globe. I think retiring will be based on him hurting his brand if he is going out continuously early not going deep in tournaments. Winning anything will be a big plus. He will want to sign off coming to Australia again and having crowds to feed off. But overall Wimby will be telling if he can’t go deep this yr maybe calls it quits end of this yr in Basel

Wimbledon 19 left a hole in Federer's heart. Had he won, I think he'd announce his retirement in the ceremony.
Now he is chasing a ghost.

Personally, all I want is the good tennis and the real tennis.

Man what a way to go out that would have been too, Nadal was on 18 and Djokovic on 16, he'd have had 21, beating them back to back. Millimeters from it happening. Even if he wasn't thinking about retiring before Wimby 19, winning it that way would have made me want to say yep it doesn't get any better than this. His story ever since has been a bit sad in comparison.

No way! He would have won Wimbledon by beating Nadal and Djokovic back-to-back. So he would have been confident to win more Slams to actively protect his record. That would have been the strangest moment to retire I could imagine.

I think he will retire when he is 100 % sure that there is no more big title possible for him, so that he has nothing to regret when losing any record in the future.

Im at work for the next hour. Im usually on here at weird times bc I work a few overnights every week, and when it's not busy I just have time on the computer :p
Sleep a lot during the day. Off the next 3 days so will be on a more normal schedule after tonight, till my next overnight shift.

Not a Maestronian, but as long as he can keep a top 10-ish level on fast courts and particularly grass (his actual ranking would be lower because of reduced schedule), I think it will be good to have him on tour to keep the ball bashers honest.

As for tournament results, for as long as he keeps making small tournament finals / big tournament semis I guess.

Djokovic and these match points man. So many matches he really should have lost lol. How many times can Fed NOT hit an ace when he gets to 40-15 :X3: I think id prefer Fed to be on 21 and Nadal on 20 and Djokovic on 17tbh. I feel Nadal can get to 21, but Djokovic might have been 1 or 2 slams too far away. Now at 18 he will play 10 more years if he has to, to make sure he gets the record lol. Imhotep :sneaky:

Hahaha! I know.

But hats off to Djokovic. I have no idea how he won that match, sick mental strength. Like he knew he had to get to a tiebreak to have a chance and he made three... I have never seen a player win a slam on such a "bad day", he was not in top form at all, neither was Federer, but Federer played a lot cleaner and should have sealed the deal, no doubt.

I just want him to try his best to get back in shape. I'll let him decide how long he will keep playing. I'd like to watch his game as long as possible though.

Sorry mate but that's just weak :) You want your guy to win against the strongest competition full stop! If not, than he cannot be considered a GOAT. If you are hoping Nadl sits at 21 and hoping for Djok (for instance) to have pause on his career because of whatever reason it just does not cut it for me. In my opinion, Seles was a better player than Graf and she would have smashed the best version of Graf including all the records if it hadn't been for that fatal stab. EOD

So, when I want someone to play Djok in a final of a GS I want him to face the best, even if the best may take the trophy off him. So what! I'd rather have Nadl play him in the final than Gaston even if they both were sitting at 21 slams and even if that final was their LAST MATCH before they retire.. I'd still pick Nadl over Gaston. Yes, I may wish his biggest opponents lose in early rounds but still at the end of the tournament I enjoy the toughest competition he may face in the final more than anything else. If they come through I am glued. If they do not and if he is playing a Medvedev in a final I watch occasionally while I grab a more important thing in life than that match - beer.

he's just fun to watch, i'm all for him playing as long as possible. if mansour bahrami got a wildcard into wimbledon i'd watch that too.

pretty sure he's on his way out this year though. covid break gave him a taste of life after tennis and i'm sure it was nice. with the On IPO coming soon, he's safely in the billionaire club as well. gotta mentally prepare for a post-fed tour...

When you are a member of Club 20 then you have earned the right to do whatever you want. So I respect everything the legendary Federer decides to do.

As long as he is competitive and actually wins matches (no necessarily the titles), I'll be glad to see him playing.

I don't think Fed's play level is as dire as some have said. Consider he held a MP against Basilashvilli in Doha and then Basil has gone on to win 2 events this year already. So his level of play isn't the worrying thing, it's his fitness and stamina. Fed really should have won Doha with such a weak field after Thiem bombed out.

I don't think he wins any more majors, but may pick up a 250, a 500 and if it's something like Paris (with a depleted field), he could win another Masters 1000.
