Olympic Tennis Is A Farce. Players Like Nagal Do Not Belong.

We have players like Nagal who can't even qualify for the 128 player field at Roland Garros and Wimbledon.

Yet they are granted entry into the 64 player field Olympics solely because they happen to be a top player from an under-represented country.

No, these are not the world's best. The quality of players gathered in Tokyo are inferior to a Grand Slam.

Remember the Jamaican bobsled team? It's not about "the world's best" in any strict sense but rather about the best from each nation. That may lead to some lesser athletes being included but inclusivity is ostensibly one of the points of all of this.

No one ever argued the Olympic field is stronger than a slam, but okay.
It is lower than a master's. A 500.

think "Eddie the Eagle" English ski jumper. INCLUSIVITY.

Inclusivity concept is awkward for a sport like tennis where every player in the world is already eligible to enter qualifying tournaments. This is one reason why many question the validity of tennis being an Olympic event.

Everyone already knows who the best players are. There is really not much drama here, Djoker's golden slam chase notwithstanding.

I get the point and it's probably why I've never watched more than a few minutes of an Olympic tennis match. Doesn't feel very important compared to how important Olympics is to track and field and gymnastics, two of the sports that virtually exist for the Olympics. Having the Olympic tennis squeezed in to grand slam season makes it seem all the less crucial.

I agree, this tournament isn't worth his time and he should prepare for Toronto and USO. Can't wait for a Djokogal match at USO.

Um, it's not a farce, it's the *beep* Olympic Games. Representing as much of the world as is possible is like half the point. If you don't like it, don't watch. There's plenty of podunk tournaments going on around the world for prize money and ranking points, and all that good stuff.

Nothing wrong with the concept of the representation of a country/nation. Olympics was like that from the inception - the Greek poleis used to send their best athletes to fight for the glory of their states, achieving the personal glory too, in the process.

Actually, the sports that cannot accommodate athletes from all the countries, due to logistic limitations, sailing for instance, have continent/region quotas and qualifications events.

The true spirit of the Olympics was compromised when the professional athletes and big advertising were allowed...

Point of the Olympics is to identify what country is best at each sport, right? So, it does that. It doesn’t matter if the top five players in the world are all from Liechtenstein, and the world number #5 gets excluded. That‘s how Olympic trials work before the Games. It’s the same concept for other sports.

It's actually the most interesting aspect of the Olympics. Let's see what Nagal can do with a huge country behind him. Let's see what Tennys Sandgren can do with half a huge country behind him.

To me, this is one of the most memorable moments in olympic history, and brings me to tears (the good ones):

I just searched on youtube sidney 2000 swimming, and there were several videos at the top with him. Easily the champion of that edition, even if he didn't go through to the next round.

The top competition is fantastic, and I will watch as many finals as I can. But it is people that are given a chance to try that make me emotional in the olympics. Tennis maybe not the best kind of sport for it, but still.

Respect Nadal.

He may not be as good as he used to be and he will have it hard to qualify soon but he is still olympic champion.

Lol get bread sticked by Carreño Busta? To underline how awful American tennis is, the only two tennis players mentioned on national broadcasts are Osaka and Djokovic, and Djokovic only because they were showing social media posts from the Games

The lack of suspense is what hurts things like tennis at the Olympics. In some obscure sport that we never watch, we could entertain the possibility of someone like Nagal from some underrepresented nation reaching the podium. But we know better... we know that they are just draw filler.

You are correct. That emotional excitement does not exist in the tennis event. Look at Round 1: #15 Monfils vs #150 Ilya Ivashka. This type of match up happens every day in pro tennis and is completely ignored.

Yet we are supposed to suddenly get excited about this match. Monfils is fighting for France and Ivashka is fighting for Belarus.

Can't imagine that anyone actually watches and gets excited by this. No, the excitement is all contrived and forced.

And someone needs to remind Monfils that he is supposed to be playing for all of France. Show some intensity.

Yeah, well, that's why American tennis largely sucks. No one cares about tennis here. We've got some good female players only because our females dominate everything. I didn't realize Sandgren had already played. Dang it Sandgren, you let us down!

Doesn't help that they're crowdless. Normally, a match between, say, a mediocre Australian and a mediocre Argentine would be pretty raucous, like a Davis Cup match. This year, we have to use our imagination, and it's hard to imagine a big crowd going wild for Duckworth.

Aren't you a American sir? Surely you remember 96 Olympics .
Apart from 2008, 2012 and to some extent 2016( because of big three patriotism) Olympics always have been not important.

More like anti @sureshs ism. Were it not for Big Fella and SoBad no one, especially OP, would know about The Nagal. I suspect sureshs probably tried to slip OP the full monty instead of just his tip last night and OP is still sore. After all, The Nagal just beat another guy he should win against according to current rankings (144 vs 197) The one to be sore about is Purcell beating Felix (190 vs 15).

Nagal absolutely blows, Medvedev is destroying him. I guess he is trying his best, although his best includes winning less than 50% of his 1st serve points lol

Are 500 million glued in from his home country? That is the hope with these Cinderella stories. That the general public that never watches tennis suddenly get excited and tune in... But the #200 Nagal may actually need to win a few rounds to stir excitement.

Enough people from India already watch tennis. India has had Paes (who actually won an Olympic medal in singles) and top 20 players like Amritraj and Krishnan. Nagal won't stir any more interest in tennis than there already is in the country.

Mirza was 100x bigger than Nagal ever will be.

2 things make this thread idiotic.

1). limits on number of athletes per country effect the lineup of many events.

2). that the 4th best from x country is better/faster/stronger than the 1st best from y country doesn’t mean that 4th best would influence the medals.

Murray beat Federer in a gold medal match. It matters not a jot who they played first round. Your issue shouldn’t be with the weakness of first rounds in the olympics, but with the overall standard of players in the tour right now, which as we all know is at an all time low, allowing a mediocre pusher to be on course for a grand slam.
