An article from today's Guardian in the UK. This is so great for the sport of tennis to have such a wonderful ambassador for the game at the Olympics.

It's great to see the respect he gets from his elite fellow athletes. Especially after the shameful disrespect he has received for years from tennis "fans" at the majors. Even as a Nadal fan I have to applaud him for what he has achieved and for the love he is now receiving. He deserves every minute of it.

I’m a fan of Djokovic but no one out here rooting for number 2. This new found fame is because he is tied for first and it is well deserved (now), but was this to be the same type of treatment if he was second in the race? Hell no, no one would care (and few did)

I believe he will win even more fans over if he can overtake the slam record as that will pretty much set him apart from the rest of the big3/field and if he can do CYGS… we’ll have to see!

Pretty much nailed it. He's always been last in the race until now. Now he's no longer known to the world as "the guy who beat Federer a couple times," he's Novak Djokovic.

I think he is also trying to create his own image now instead of the guy who chased Roger/Nadal for the last 1.5 decades.

Djokovic was heckled mercilessly while playing Kudla at Wimbledon. The crowd treated him so poorly that he walked directly to his chair after acknowledging the umpire post-match and did not thank the crowd at all.

Yeah he says that now that he's up at the front for once.

In years past he was always talking about how he was motivated by Fed and Rafa to catch them.

I do think he is motivated by both( mainly Fed). And ofcourse he was trying to catch them, anybody want a slam record , will have to chase the old record holder

He said it because the reporter, whoever it was, asked this stupid question:

Q: "What has it been like to be something of the 'bad guy' chasing after Roger and Rafa all these years?"
ND: "I don't consider myself a bad guy. I mean, that's your opinion. I'm not chasing anybody. I'm making my own path and my own journey, my own history."

The question was stupidly phrased, but he's said the opposite of "I'm not chasing anybody" in the past. He's been very open at times about tracking down all of Fed & Rafa's records.

If Djokovic continues to prevail over Nadal at RG, then I think Nadal is done with winning slams. Federe is probably even done with turning up to slams.

You are probably right about that particular crowd, but few points to be noted here. 1) The crowd at the Kudla match at Wimbledon need not be representative of the crowd everywhere. 2) the conduct you describe reflects poorly on those hecklers, and not on the player. We've seen this before, at USO 2015 final, most notoriously. It is what it is. Some sections of the crowd will be boorish hooligans. 3) after the Kudla match, there were plenty of posts here claiming that the crowd was just rooting for the underdog, and slamming Novak for his phrase in Serbian after the match. Good on you for at least acknowledging sections of the crowd were deplorable. It seems to be fashionable for some delusional "fans" on TTW to keep claiming that the crowds are always civil and moderate, even when they are obviously not. :)

Seriously doubt it.

Why would they deserve "another level" by other athletes now? It has no merit. As sport players themselves, they certainly appreciate achievements, where Novak> Fedal.

That last bagel at Fed's pet slam, after quitting RG, doesn't leave a nice aftertaste, either.

Federer quitting Roland-Garros will also have lost him a lot of respect from serious athletes, who are prepared to fight to the end: win, lose or draw.
