Federer News: Surgery

This is painful news, but also seeing Federer being okay, smiling, wanting to make a potential comeback, it's not the worst. I do believe Roger would not want to end the career journey of 20+ years just fading out because of injury. If he can return to the tour even for a little bit, he will. Speediest of recoveries to the champion!

I wish he could retire on his own terms and not because of an injury but health should come first and if it means never coming back on court so be it, if he do comeback next year it will be to say goodbye, still what a career the guy had who would have thought before Roger Federer appeared that such a career would be possible nothing to be sad about :giggle: .

This is just too sad. He should be able to go out on his own terms.
I hope the same end doesn't come for Rafa, where his body won't allow him to play any longer. The two most popular players ever shouldn't have to bow out with injuries.

Yeah, and combined with losing valuable playing time with the pandemic, this has not been the right way to go.

Devastating news. I thought we had a couple more slams appearance in play.

If he comes to play, he will have to be physically fit. Otherwise there is no point tainting his legacy with bad losses like vs Hurkacz. But 40+ guy who didn't recover from surgery in 14 months, don't think will make 100% recovery to play professional tennis.

So it sounds like he would need to get this surgery regardless of whether he plans to come back or not?

Yes, seemingly if he wants to keep "running" and moving freely. Fact of the matter is his 2nd operation was botched, now it's clear and we have confirmation of this -> Reason why his comeback was crappy this time around.

Wishful thinking but hopefully this operation gets it fixed properly. It'll take some magic, some luck and a lot of hard work but I don't think this is the end. Roger will come back in some shape or form like he mentioned.

The 2nd + follow-up operation in 2020 were botched IMO. He never really seemed to feel 100% again like he did after the 1st meniscus tear in 2016.

He has the best doctors in the world. Not likely botched. He is aging normally and he cannot accept it. Wants to play forever. A narcissistical egomaniac.

Is it even possible to have a botched surgert with the level of medical service Federer has access to? Maybe Federer opted in for a less invasive procedure or something, in hopes it would be enough to fix the issue without a very long recovery, but it just didn't work.

Fed’s knee was already bothering him at the FO

it’s pretty amazing that Fed with a bad knee made it to the R16 at the FO and the QF at Wimbledon. That’s very impressive.

Maybe he’s got one last historic run in him(perhaps a slam semi at Wimbledon in 2022 or 2023) if the surgery goes well. Color me crazy. But I am not giving up on himjust yet. I guess that’s what makes us fans.

You'd be surprised, not many people are that optimistic here. Idk about historic runs but Federer seems to want to make a return still. If he genuinely does, I think the situation isn't that dire and Roger would be able to come back for a bit.

I don't consider myself a Federer fan even though I enjoy watching him play, but this is sad, you can feel he truly loves the game so much and would want to play forever, growing old if your passion in life is high level sport (it's different for artists) really s*cks and this is a good example of it.

Even though he is maybe done I admire a lot his willingness to still want to come back, against the time that is passing and against his body getting older and older, to still play like in the old days, his determination and dedication is still there, after more than 20 years of playing tournaments. He is inspiring.
In fact, even more than their games, the will power of the Big 3 is maybe what impresses me the most

Just sucks for fans because he’s one of the few guys on tour worth watching nowadays. Tennis has been just garbage without him playing good tennis. It’s gotten to the point where we’ve got bums like Medvedev and Opelka playing Masters finals. I can’t see myself watching much tennis other than a couple matches at the Slams from this point forward.

Good for you. Stop watching tennis.
Let others enjoy Meddy. No comments about Opelkabot.

Even if a bagel set turns out to be his last set played on the pro tour, I don't see any shame in it bc he made it to the QF of Wimbledon on a bum knee, lack of matchplay over the previous 18 months, and on the verge of his 40th bday. I would love to see Roger come back in 2022 fit and be able to generate the same hope for a miracle win as he did in 2017 and to a much lesser extent this year (2021), but if he doesn't, it will be fine. This kind of ending for Roger has been inevitable and predictable, as he himself said some 10 years ago, that he would play until his body said no. And that's exactly what has happened.

I disagree. Part of the reason these two are so popular is their desire to compete even as winning became harder. Look at Pete who retired at the top. I don't think he has a quarter of the fan support that Roger and Rafa have.

This is devastating, but expected. He tore his meniscus a while back. Every surgery on it is meant to clean out more and more cartilage that gets torn away with further use. I'm approximately the same age as Roger and tore mine in high school tennis. Keep tearing it over the years due to regular wear and tear and have needed a knee replacement for the past 3 years. It is not permitted at my age bc the replacement is only good one time. A second one in my 60s wouldn't work as well. I fear he will never play at the highest level after this. He's probably close to bone on bone in that knee. What a privilege it was to watch him in his prime in the mid 2000s.

No point in coming back. The fourth knee surgery isn't going to go any better than the last two. I know he desperately wants to avenge his catastrophic choke at Wimby 2019 but at this point it is what it is. Game, Set, Match.

I'm just wondering what went wrong between the summer 2019 and spring 2020 when he decided to go for a surgery.

He was fine in 2019: after Wimbledon final he played 2 matches in Cincy, 5 in NY, 3 in Shanghai, 5 in Basel (where he won his last trophy) and 4 in London.
2020 AO: 6 matches.

Any ideas what exactly has caused his injury?

For his sake, I just hope he gets fit and comes back for a easy farewell tour of a couple of tournaments (maybe Wimbledon and Basel). Coming from a family with older folks who have had progressive joint (knee and hip) problems and others who have been fit as a fiddle, I know how it is night and day between one or the other. It would suck for anyone who was a world class athlete to be be in pain or have imperfect mobility in their later years.

Roger should go out on his own terms whatever that may be

It is sad for the sport when we see icons not able to do that. I truly wish the big 3 leave when they want and not let injury determine their last match

it’s chronic no other words. Maybe at this point it’s botched.

You don’t get why a father of four young kids wants to be able to kick a soccer ball around with them? Or go on a hike? Or hit a tennis ball with them?

Which part is confusing?

If he wants to walk without a limp he needs to retire. That’s my point. He’s not gonna be able to do all that stuff if he keeps playing around. Don’t do further damage. It’s chronic knees. He has hardly even played. Smh

He needs the surgery either way, whether he plays again or doesn’t. From his video it sounds like if he doesn’t get the surgery, he prob will have a limp in the near future.

It will be worse if keeps trying at it. The guy has hardly played and he needs a 3rd surgery on the same knee? Yikes .

That’s what i hope he does. He needs to think long term here. 2022 farewell .

Alternatively, the surgeon repaired the knee well enough to do everything bar top-flight ATP tennis because the underlying state of the knees is what it is.

Either the knee didn’t heal properly or the surgery didn’t go well. Either way, he apparently needs a 3rd. Are you an Arthroscopic Surgeon?

I don’t need to be a surgeon when a guy’s about to have a 3rd surgery on the same damn knee. It’s not good. The guy hardly even played tennis and he already needs a 3rd surgery? I hope roger gets a clue and thinks about the long-term effects here.

I’m usually always on the "never count him out" side but this time, I think it’s over for real. Sad in the sense that he will leave a hole in tennis but he has nothing to regret in regard to his fantastic career.

"Some of you suffer with me"

couldn't be more true for some Federer fans tbh the decade of the 2010s hasn't been that kind to Roger and suffered many bad losses, fair play to the proper Federer fans who stayed by him and didn't switch to Djokovic in 2011 or something

Another surgery?? That Koepfer match at the French really screwed him over. I think that was what ruined his knees again.

I suspect this is it. MAYBE we’ll get an Andy Murray type obligatory Wimby trot out but …. yeah, this kinda sucks for tennis.

It is quite sad. First Delpo, then Murray, Stan, now Fed and possibly Nadal. Novak will likely win it all. But then there is this vast emptiness in ATP despite all the young talents and efforts.

Some of the posters here seem to think that surgery RENEWs the knee. With cartilage damage, which is what Roger has, it doesn’t. Surgery on the meniscus just allows the knee to move smoothly, freely again. But once a meniscus tears to the extent it needs surgery, it’s not going to heal back to the way it was before. And even where cartilage receives blood flow and can heal, it heals notoriously slowly, certainly not at the pace needed for a pro tennis player trying to win Slams.
