Stringing Video Suggestions?

Hello all,
A friend and I string for a Div I tennis team, so we have plenty of racquets to go through. Other users have suggested that someone make a stringing video, and I have the means to do so now! (Camcorder, lots of racquets, a nice(r) machine). All examples will be made on a Prince NEOS 1000, If alternative mounting/etc systems are requested, we can PROBABLY accomodate. I have a LF MS200TT that I can use, but it's inconvenitent because it is a table top machine.

Any suggestions welcome for tips, tricks, techniques you want to see. I'm currently thinking a generic string job, start to finish, with a top down (sort of) angle/view. I'll probably string it all the way through silently, and add a voice over track to it to explain what is going on while I work.

Other things I am thinking about doing is starting clamp tricks (jumpering strings, using a starting clamp to ... start the crosses, etc).

Any other techniques people are interested in/curious about? Anyone read something somewhere that they want some clarification on, or to see it in motion? Leave some suggestions, with any luck, we can get to it before too long. My schedule is going to be faiiiirly open for the next week or two as far as class work goes, so I'd be happy to work on this a little.

Lets get some input!

That would be awesome! Zoom in on the knots if possible. I've never strung before (should be getting my machine today!) but I've always been curious as to how it is the racquet doesn't loose tension once the clamp is released after tying the knot.

Are you going to string 2-piece or 1-piece?

  • Weaving one ahead.
  • Placing small pieces of string to help with moving the mains that covered holes.
  • Though I do not do it, a lot of stringers like to pre-lace the mains.
  • Using a starting clamp to extend too short of string at the end of a job.
  • Two Piece job using starting clamp, then come back and tie off.
  • Two Piece job using a starting knot (for those without a starting clamp).
  • One Piece job where the mains end at the head, go across and tie off.
  • One Piece Modified Around-the-World technique. I know someone who did a great job with a tutorial that you could reference.;)
I am sure there are others that I will think of later.

None-the-less I am sure you will do a GREAT Job. Hopefully you will receive the appreciation that others that embarked on such a project did not. :(

Diredesire: For a video as extensive as those suggested by "Flash9" and "Eagle", providing it be of decent quality, I'd be willing to pay for it (as long as it is a reasonable amount).

There are some great suggestions here. I'll probably start with the basics, maybe a full length video... ~30 mins? Maybe even longer. There's the consideration that people don't want to watch an hour long video of someone taking their time, but I also don't want to rush through it and have people not know what's going on.

As far as the more specific suggestions (eagle, flash9), I'd probably go for short, specific clips that detail the main points of each.

Like Flash9 said, I hope that the project ends up being a fun/rewarding one. I know Masamusou and jj300 caught a lot of crap for putting up their videos, and I have yet to understand why. I give true props to them for putting their vids up, stuff like that is only beneficial for the community as a whole.

I can't promise any dates/deadlines, but we'll get working on it whenever we get a chance. We'll definitely have plenty of racquets to work with. I've got to figure out how to edit the videos first ;)

Thanks a lot for taking up the project. It's a very good idea.

Almost everything seems to be covered by the suggestions, but here's a couple more that might be helpful for the new stringers.
A proper way to mount a frame: how tight the frame should be secured & how to check.
A close-up demonstration of the weaving techniques for faster weaving.

There has long been a need for an "advanced" video of this sort that hones in on tips and tricks to improve the efficiency and consistency of the stringer's art. I'd concentrate on those; merely showing how the racquet is strung has been done too often and is too easily found on the web.

I agree with Valjean, I think if you created some short clips, and maybe called then, Best Practices, or Recommended Techniques, rather then one long beginning to end video.

Most of stringing is repetitive, once you start the mains, it is the same until you tie off or begin the crosses, no use showing the tensioning of every main. Likewise once you get the crosses started it is repetitive for the next 15 or so weaves.

Great idea - good luck...

I think the hardest part for new stringers is how to get started. Measuring the string, and understanding how to get the first string pulled correctly.

Demostrating different weaving technigues would also be benificial...

I'm bumping a nearly year old thread. I have a job (non-stringing related) in Seattle near the place I string. Since it's the Summer, my evenings are generally pretty free. I am ready to give this project some serious time and effort. I want to know if there's any additions that people want to see? I've posted some knot videos, I'm hoping to figure out how to get a nice voice over on the clips. I'll complete the voice over on my knot videos and start uploading them to some storage sites.

Please give me some ideas! I'll finalize my "to do list" and start later this week.

I'll have a chance to work on the following machines:

Prince NEOS 1000
Gamma ESII+ (with stand)

If my friend is feeling generous, he might let me sneak into the pro shop and let me string on the Star 3. If there is anything in particular people want shown, let me know!

Especially the "special" ones, such as ATW and Jay_Cee's Method.
I'm not really a stringer, but after going on string forum .net and reading tons of information. It'd be nice to see the different methods on video and try them myself.

My brother strings for me, using Jay_Cee's method and I like the feel of it more compared to just plain(?) stringing.

I think we'll certainly see an ATW because it seems like DD does that most of the time.


I'd be more than willing to help you with this project if you need someone to edit , do some graphics, or help with any of the files.


I suggest using audacity to do the voice over if you're planning on not talking while you string. Plug a mic into your pc, load audacity, click record and you're done. Merge the clips on WMM or premier and you're pretty much done.

What are these methods? I missed these when they were on. This is why we need the stick now!!!

Does anyone have any tips/suggestions on encoding? I'm thinking a medium resolution xvid or divx style encoded video. (by medium resolution i mean plenty big).

I did divx for mine because my file sizes were kind of large. Medium resolution seems about good, like 640x480? Maybe one size smaller.

Divx will also make it uploadable to stage6 if you want to get the word out to more places.

I think that you should try to get backing (maybe from TW?) to make an extensive professional DVD. Well I guess I don't know how much time you want or have to put into this, but a DVD or a series of DVD's on stringing would be of great use to me and a lot of other amateur stringers.

I would like to learn more time-saving techniques and some tips on the push-weave, as I find that I can only push weave about 3/4 of the way as I get to the second half of the crosses. Everything else that would be of interest has already been mentioned.

I figure if I can get the material out, there's no reason to go through the hassle. If you guys REALLY like them, you can feel free to donate a few bucks to my paypal ;)

The only benefit to you guys would be if i was backed with $$, i'd be forced to complete these vids on a deadline ;)

However, I'll probably have a bit of time on my hands and some nicer machines to play with in the near future, so time shouldn't be TOO much of an issue.

Not totally related, but can you show calibrating your NEOS? Mines off by about 4-5 lbs right now. I know I need to adjust a nut or something. Ah anyway my suggestion. Thanks for the effort thus far.

I'll add it to my list. Have you seen the written instructions before, though? I'm not sure I'll be spending the time to edit a video if the written instructions are good enough.

I'm about to start recording here in a few, just trying to get an order of all the clips i want to get checked off.

I did read the stuff that came with my NEOS, and I think I got it calibrated, but it was difficult. I was using a digital fish scale so the closest I was able to get was 50.16 Lbs. It took me forever though constant back and forth-age. I would still like to see it included though. Thanks DD.

I'll see what I can do, but if I DO get around to callibration, it'll be way far down the road, as it's a very specific video.

I'm going to review my footage and hopefully a few of them came out well enough where I'll be willing to post them...

I can do that, but it'd be a MS200TT, which isn't a very standard drop-weight, and it'd take a while, since I won't have my machine with me for the entire summer... :p

If you plan to wait that long, I might be able to swing it. I have a video of a friend stringing, I have to check with him to OK me posting it, but that might speed things up.

Some of these suggestions might be repeats of others...but oh well I'm too lazy to check off the ones that have been told:

*tips when starting the mains to avoid string slippage on the clamp
*show how to keep the strings neat (like when you look around the frame you want to make sure strings are crossing, especially noticeable on tie offs)
*maybe a few different types of knots (standard, figure 8 knot, starting knot, etc)
*lead tape placement (handle, throat, head, etc)
*replacing of grips
*tubing (for those broken grommets)
*stenciling
*heat shrink to build up a grip
*prestretching of natural gut
*using the Prince O3 keys
*around the world technique

news huh?

Well, the great thing is the many of the videos are captured, the bad thing is I have no DV cable with me to transfer the videos! I'll be going home this weekend to help my bro with a project, and i'll pick up the DV cable at that time. I'm hoping to get a free moment next week to make all the clips (many of them are VERY short) and doing a quick voice over and then posting.

Good news!

I finished capturing the video, and i'm beginning to "script" what i want to say in the voice overs. For the most part, these videos are very short, and will probably be a little disappointing. I am just trying to get my feet wet, and establish some sort of "tone" for the series. If these videos turn out well, I'll be moving more towards a full length (i.e. full job) tutorial with commentary. I may be able to get my friend who pull-weaves to do a guest job.
