Chair umpire Carlos Ramos?

Why there isn't much information about tennis chair umpires on the net? I need to know some, specially about Carlos Ramos.

No, he is Portuguese.

He can speak Spanish though, with Spaniards and Argentinians for example. He speaks in Spanish with Safin, too.

Lars Graf seems pretty cool to me as well. It would be cool to find out more info on these guys and gals who umpire.

Graf wrote an article in deuce a couple of years ago about life as an umpire (he loves it and goes back to his hotel and reviews his matches)

A google search might bring it up.

What exactly are you interested in ? Hes a pretty convincing upmire for me, I like when he is in the chair, his overrules are usually 99% correct and is a very calm guy. Does not crave attention.

I would say that he was being a jerk, except that that was a HORRIBLE call. That ball was way in. I would've been just as pissed had it been me. Nothing is more frustrating than a great shot being taken away from you.

Yup, it's not nice, but every pro out there knows that the umpire can't change the call after the point has gone so why keep complaining and going over board? It made him look like an idiot and meant his mind wasn't fully on the match which cost him.

While it does suck that Andy lost that point, its not like its the Chair Umpire's fault. The linesperson made the call and it was on the far side of the court. From the commentating it seems that Andy was getting a lot of bad calls, but that doesn't excuse him from swearing at the officials. They have to make 2 or 3 close calls per point, and that amounts to over 100 per match. With the speed players are hitting the balls, its not easy to do.

The ATP/WTA should REQUIRE Hawkeye at EVERY event, even clay events. Yes, it rarely does screw up, but not as much as line judges. Yes, it is expensive, but it should become a required cost of business.

Graf was actually very patient and showed a lot of professional restraint to keep taking the insults from Roddick without issuing a code violation. He obviously knew there had been some problemic calls, but he wasn't in a clear position to over-rule anything... and he knew that Roddick was blowing off frustration, and a code violation would have just inflamed the problem. Roddick just looks like a whiner... and considering that he ended up losing that match in a third set tie-breaker, it cost him.

To me, the best part of the exchange was... "if I have a problem with my forehand, I have to fix it. If you have a problem with your referee crew, why don't you fix it?" If Roddick had just stuck to this argument and left out the F-bombs and "you are useless" comments, he might have gotten farther.

There always seems to be at least one person on a line judge crew who for one reason or another has a problem on a certain day. If you watch a lot of matches, you'll see it is the same line judge who get challenged throughout the match. They may be fine on 90% of the matches, but occasionally, like players, they will have a bad day.

I do like Hawk-eye, but I do not like the challenge system. I think that every point should be verified by hawk eye. It only takes like 5 seconds to do the hawk eye thing and can be done between points, as the server collects balls. If there is a problem with the point, the chair can be notified and replay the point. While this may not be useful for checking every ball during the middle of the rally, it certainly will end make sure all winners are correctly called (and would have helped out Roddick in that point).

The reason why I do no like the challenge system is that if a player has run out of challenges and is facing a match point, the player may lose if the winning ball is miscalled. I think it almost happened in one of the matches with one of the Williams sisters last year. Also I would like to see the technology on every court, not just the main ones where the superstars are playing on.

Why every body's turned it about Graf? I don't care about that guy and he doesn't seem as handsome as that protuguese guy.
There's nonthing available on google or anywhere else.

I totally agree with this.

I don't. It screws with the players, because there is no way to ever have it on every court in professional tennis. IMO, *****ing about calls in tennis is the dumbest thing. I mean, if you're pissed that the line judge was off by a 1/2 centimeter than you should have hit it inside the line. Get on with it.

I thought this was a pretty interesting argument. He said "maybe we shouldn't rent umpires when we come to spain, maybe we should have a professionals"

Ted Robinson brought this up a few weeks ago, in every other sport in the world the officials are the best in the world, but in tennis they just hire locals to do the calls. I've always thought this was rather odd considering tennis a professional sport with lots of money on the line.

at least they now have touring umpires, in the 70s/early 80s, many umpires at events were just some guys that worked at the local club. everytime mac teared into them, they looked clueless & sometimes seemed unaware of rules that mac cited when arguing.
