The others are pretty well known but the 10 QF is highly underrated. Before Djokovic collapsed it was a great level from Tsonga, the 08 F rematch. Big tennis from both.

I’d say he was the 4th highest winning level, behind obviously the winners in 05 Safin 07 Rog and 14 Stan

Djokovic got lucky in one of the match in 2008 AO semifinal. 2-time defending champion Federer who was crippled with mono could only play 50% of his original capability

One of the benefits of a forum like this one is that we can go back and read the match threads of the time. No need to reinvent the past to fit our preferred outcomes!
Nah, no need for any reinvention. Anyone who has watch tennis in 2008 knows darn well that Federer was sluggish due to mononucleosis. News flashed everywhere on the internet explained why Federer was fatigue, sore throat, fever, headache, etc..

Any blind Djokovic fanboy would denied that Federer wasn't perfectly healthy

Just posting fact to bring some perspective to this topic since many posters have watched tennis way after 2008;)

A loss is a loss. Accepting a loss gracefully and moving on is the first thing that a sportsman learns I believe.

As a fan you can argue as much and add all the imaginjuries or whatever, hardly matters. He reached semis and lost there to a rising Djokovic.

Joker's ninth defeat there will be in a few days.
He is "injured" after all, isn't he?

and it’s not even that complicated. Fed and Novak have always had a close rivalry. Fed won the first 4 matches against teenaged Novak in 2006/early 2007 but after that they were very close. They split 10-10 the following 20 matches they played. And a quick look at the match threads at the time shows that Fed was considered the favorite at the time of the match and if anything doubts of physical condition were expressed about Novak.

Federer was actually starting to decline from his stratospheric peak in 2007 with those weird losses to canas and volandri in addition to losing to Novak in Canada. Doesn't mean he wasn't still the best player just that Novak was already catching up to him in 2007 so by 2008 beating Fed really wasn't that shocking.

Agree, it wasn’t that shocking. Novak was very good and went on to get even better

I never fully wrote him off, but it sure felt like that Chung match was signaling the end.

That was the frailest he's ever looked.
He looked even worse losing to Taro Daniel in the first round of IW a couple of months later. I was in the stands that day and knowing that he had already undergone elbow surgery recently and was still looking bad, I thought his goose was fully cooked. I thought he would retire and I would never see him play again.

Well, he has been dominant for five years since three months after that loss, but I have never seen him play again live as I didn't go to IW in 2019 and he hasn’t played there otherwise. I haven’t been traveling to other tournaments since the pandemic either.

Injured or not, when you decide to play and step on the court it's fair game. If you don't want to risk getting defeated in a dominant fashion, stay in the locker room. Otherwise, no excuses.

Does this apply to the Djoko brigade in here making multitudes of excuses for his losses?

That is certainly true, which is why I've never understood those people who feel that a player not being 100% is taking away from the other player's victory, or not a legitimate loss for the loser. The point is to win on the day, whatever shape that you are both in.

It so obvious seeing 2007 AO Federer/2007 USO Federer to 2008 AO Federer. Drastic difference, He was sluggish against Tipsarevic. Should have lost that match.

Poor IW and Miami 2008, he only looked good come Wimbledon 2008+.

It like the year Djokovic had in 2017, playing with a bad elbow. Losing to Cecchinato and Istomin.

Damn, Safin destroyed Djokovic both times they played

tbh Federer should have more wins against Djokovic at the AO too but his body did him dirty with the mono/back injuries in 2008 as mentioned, plus the AO organizers did him dirty by progressively slowing down the courts year after year
