There are celebrations in Peru for Varillas having reached R16. He is the man of the hour in his country. Not sure if any other Peruvian male tennis player reached R16 of a grand slam before.
He took out two seeds and is having best year of his career. His best surface is clay.

Just some info. Hope this guy has great time on Sunday.

yzaga reached the QF at the AO and the USO ;)

Yea even I will be skipping this one. 6-2, 6-4, 6-1.

Khachanov or Sonego in the QF…

Looking like Alcaraz and Djokovic are now basically locked on a collision course for the semis.

Lol this is the biggest joke of a round of 16 match I’ve ever seen.
Why? Varillas is ranked 97 and he won 5 challenger titles in South America. He already reached the 1st round of a slam twice, but was unfortunate enough to always play against a very good player in the first round. First one was RG 2022 where he lost to FAA in 5 sets and second one was AO 2023 where he lost to Zverev in 5 sets again. Now he won every RG 2023 match so far in 5 sets. So he is used to play long matches. Plus he beat RBA twice and now Hurkacz.

On paper he looks like he won't win more than 5 games against Djokovic, but could end up being very dangerous to Djokovic.

I doubt it. Three five setters; he won’t have the energy to maintain a level required to trouble Djokovic.
Straight sets loss and an easy path to the QF for Novak.

I think Varillas gets one set against an unmotivated Novak. He's exactly the kind of player he gift sets to

Alcaraz can easily lose to Musetti and Titspas.
You are hyping up Alcaraz too much my friend. I would hate for you to be disappointed.
In any case, even if the semis happen, I'm not expecting Alcaraz to get a set vs Novak.

Djokovic with his cushy draw yet again
It's a pure gimme. A no name player in the R4, then his pigeons Sonego or Kach o
In the QF.

But realistically what would be a tough draw for Novak in RG unless Nadal was playing?

Also do you have any info on Nadal's surgery? It's crazy that he had to go the medical route for something like this. Will he ever be the same player again after having been under the knife?

What it is, is excruciatingly dull. If Alcaraz loses against Musetti, I doubt I will bother watching the tournament any further.
A tough draw is subjective but thus far he hasn’t faced anyone, except maybe ADF, with a hope in hell of a challenge.
Djokovic coasting to slam titles with fluke draws is becoming extremely tedious to me although I’m sure others disagree.

Rafa’s hip problem was misdiagnosed initially, which is why he didn’t recover. It seems it is now correctly assessed and this surgery addressed the problem and an issue surrounding an old hip injury. It is therefore expected he can recover fully albeit that is going to take him out of this season.
Provided he can heal fully, then he is the one player I would expect to return and be able to play at a high level. Time will tell, hopefully he will challenge again. Knowing Rafa, he won’t come back unless he feels he can do that.

Musetti yes but Tsitsipas very unlikely. His BH is very exploitable for Alcaraz.

Why do you expect Novak to straight set Alcaraz? Ofcourse Alcaraz could have an off day and lose badly. Though the level he showed against Shapo was insane. I believe it to be an extremely tough and tight match if it happens.
