The gut/poly thread

I'm only playing 1-2X per week and rotating between racquets, so it takes a while to get some real playtime on each string job. I just hit about 8 hours of play on my VS / Poly Tour Strike hybrid, and it's cooked. Still plays fine, good spin and power. But, it's really uncomfortably firm. Arm discomfort after 5-10 minutes of hitting.

I guess I expected the softness and longevity of the gut to reduce the impact of dead poly. But the dead poly totally dominates the feel. Not sure I'll try this combo again.

what racquet and tension?

what other hybrids have you tried?

Yonex Percept 100, 55m/50x. Haven’t tried any other gut/poly hybrids. I tried a few poly/syngut and poly/multi hybrids last year, but otherwise I’ve mainly played full poly setups. Since my arm has been bugging me I switched to Rexis Speed, which has worked out really well so far.

hope the arm feels better soon. what tension were you using for your poly/syn/multi hybrids and at what tension do you have Rexis at? were those strings all used in the percept?

not saying you are looking at gut/poly this way...but i've heard some expect it to feel like a pillow or night and day difference. In a way it is but if you arm is injured, best thing to do is rest. Also knowing your previous tension (for me atleast) knows how to adjust tension when switching to gut/poly.

I tried a variety of hybrid setups last summer, at the time I was mostly using Yonex PTP and mixing with Dynawire, Babolat and Wilson Syn Guts, X1 Biphase, Multifeel, Velocity. All the hybrids were in the 50-54 pound range, with the poly 2-3lbs lower than the syngut/multi.

Since then I’ve been mostly stringing full bed poly (or poly/poly hybrids) in the mid 40’s. My go-to string job lately is Lynx Tour at 48lbs.

My arm started bugging me a bit during the Gamma Sapphire playtest, switching back to the gut/poly hybrid racquet seemed to help but it really fell off a cliff at the ~8hr mark. I wasn’t expecting pillow-like softness, actually for the first few hours I would have described it as a crisp and lively feel, lots of spin and snap from the strings. Seemed like all of a sudden it got really firm.

Right now playing Rexis Speed at 50lbs and it feels great. Only doing drill sessions lately with light hitting, avoiding serves while anything is still tender. But it’s not too bad.

thanks for the info. get well soon. Rexis is fairly soft to sometimes mushy as it looses tension/get's notched IMO.

If you do give a gut/poly another try...try tier1/tru pro ghost wire as your poly

so Madison is saying she's playing like 10X better after she switched to Full bed polyester, instead of Gut hybrid. maybe hybrid is no good ??

I think you missed the key point in what she said. She switched from 18x20 to a 16x19 and then went to full poly to help with a tad more control thinking that the more open pattern my help her arm/shoulder where she has been having issues.

It wasn't really just figuring out now but related to her arm and injury.
