NEW YORK (Reuters) - J.K. Rowling has outed one of the main characters of her best-selling Harry Potter series, telling fans in New York that the wizard Albus Dumbledore, head of Hogwarts school, is gay.

Speaking at Carnegie Hall on Friday night in her first U.S. tour in seven years, Rowling confirmed what some fans had always suspected -- that she "always thought Dumbledore was gay," reported entertainment Web site E! Online.

Rowling said Dumbledore fell in love with the charming wizard Gellert Grindelwald but when Grindelwald turned out to be more interested in the dark arts than good, Dumbledore was "terribly let down" and went on to destroy his rival.

That love, she said, was Dumbledore's "great tragedy."

"Falling in love can blind us to an extent," she said.

The audience reportedly fell silent after the admission -- then erupted into applause.

Rowling, 42, said if she had known that would be the response, she would have revealed her thoughts on Dumbledore earlier.

Fans on the top Potter fan site TheLeakyCauldron.org (http://www.the-leaky-cauldron.org) were divided on the news, some uncertain Rowling wasn't going to backtrack on the announcement, others saying it was unnecessary, and some welcoming the extra information on Dumbledore.

"This is even more awesome because it adds another layer to Dumbledore's character, which is already so rich and complicated. I hope he got over Grindlevald (sic) and fell in love again," wrote Amanda.

Rowling said she had read through a script for the movie adaptation of the sixth book in the series, "Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince" and corrected a passage in which Dumbledore was reminiscing about past loves by crossing it out and scrawling "Dumbledore is gay" over it.

Rowling, a mother of three, is now estimated to be worth $1.12 billion, making her the first dollar-billionaire author.

"Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows" -- the seventh and final book in the boy wizard series -- became the fastest-selling book in history when it was released in July.

More than 11 million copies were sold in the first 24 hours in the United States and Britain.

Har har.

This was strange news. I wouldn't have expected this at all. Almost like saying voldermort was a hemaphrodyte, wouldn't be surprised if Rowling revealed that next.

Haha! I saw her in a recent interview where her low cut top slipped and her breasts came out a bit, that made all the papers.

And now she reveals this! I think she must be looking for a bit of excitement now she's done with all the books.

I don't understand how this can make the news if the series is supposedly over and the story has been completed of this FICTIONAL work, especially when it is the revealing that a FICTIONAL character was gay and the author didn't feel the need to add it into the books. Just a ploy to make her work seem "edgier", how stupid.

I understand what you're saying, however, I believe she just wanted his charater to seem more, "in depth."

I hope that doesn't make the people that had loved his character before hearing this change their opinion. I read the books avidly, waited patiently, counted the days, loved them all and it doesn't matter in the slightest. Gay or straight he's still a genius character. It's an interesting bit of trivia but his sexual orientation doesn't matter.

Yeah, although (imo) dumbledore was already a very complicated character whose story remained largely untold even at the end of the last book.

when i was referencing wikipedia a few months back while reading the deathly hallows, someone had posted a paragraph saying most or all characters in HP were bisexual.
it seemed more like vandalism, can't recall the page.

btw, is this a sequel to that "british coach accused of lesbianism" thread ;-)

This I agree with. I swear I had more questions when I finished that book than I had answers. But this news doesn't surprise me, in fact it makes perfect sense. I do wonder if it was included in one of the last 3 books and was just edited out of the final version, for brevity, because it was irrelevent, or whatever.

The fan fiction that's out there is a heck of a lot racier than this story, so anyone who thinks we need to 'protect the children' might want to take a real look at what some of those children are cooking up on their own.

The rumour of DD being gay has been circulating around the internet for some time--fans are very astute and will connect dots even if they were unintended. I think JK just wants to protect the nature of her characters so she is going public and giving out details to quell the noise.

BTW, Richard Harris made a much better Dumbledore than this Gambon fellow.

that way, Gandalf had a friendship with Saruman, and then they became enemies.
just thinking ...

oh btw, the previous post #12 will be deleted shortly.

Lends an entirely new meaning to the phrase, Harry's magic wand!

Magic does not eminate from the wand, so "magic wand" is nonsensical. The wand merely amplifies and directs the magic. Case in point, House Elves don't need wands and young wizards often create magic without intending and without their wand. Just saying...;)

It should not matter even if we were talking about a real person, and this is a fictional character.

^ reread the part where Harry meets DD in the "afterlife." DD breaks down in tears supposedly because of his sister's death, but also, I think, because of how he was blinded by love (re Grindelwald) and by love lost.

You mean the king's cross chapter after Vold tries to kill him?
I just opened the book,to see what you're saying, and it says in that chapter that above all it was the hallows that above all drew them together with Grindelwald and that the shared a dream etc...I dunno I just can't see that. lol I am still a little bit .."shocked" about this...wow

not really.HP 7 is the fastest selling book in the HISTORY. J.K rowling is the FIRST ever billionaire writer.
Harry potter and his universe are one of the most beloved so far.Fans would like to know some things more about the characters and unanswered questions. So,no it's not stupid.

She is also protecting the franchise by controlling the nature of the characters (and sustaining interest).

There is a point where DD breaks down and Harry has to console him. That's the part I was referring to. I may be wrong, but I thought the break in composure was due to more than just the description of his sister's death and that he may have inadvertantly been the one to kill her. Seems like there was an element of "lost love" or rejection embedded in that scene.

According to my dictionary, gay means lighthearted and cheerful.
So what's the fuss all about ?
DD wasn't all that serious a character, iirc.

Morpheus - I'm glad you cleared that up. I lost a bit of sleep trying to pin down the source of magic for house elves...;)
